The English Bible in the Early Modern World addresses the most
significant book available in the English language in the centuries
after the Reformation, and investigates its impact on popular
religion and reading practices, and on theology, religious
controversy and intellectual history between 1530 and 1700.
Individual chapters discuss the responses of both clergy and laity
to the sacred text, with particular emphasis on the range of
settings in which the Bible was encountered and the variety of
responses prompted by engagement with the Scriptures. Particular
attention is given to debates around the text and interpretation of
the Bible, to an emerging Protestant understanding of Scripture and
to challenges it faced over the course of the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries.

This book addresses a conundrum. Alone of the major competing
political interests during the civil wars of the 1640s, royalism
needed to transcend attachment to one nation or one religious
tradition and recruit a support base in each of England, Ireland
and Scotland. This book aims to provide a concise interpretation
and reassessment of royalism during these crucial years and focuses
on this dilemma, and on the resources, intellectual and practical,
deployed to address it, with mixed success. It focuses on the key
ideas and values which made royalism a formidable political
alternative, rather than on the more usual factional, military or
literary perspectives. It argues that a ‘three-kingdom’
perspective not only gives a broader view but also clarifies the
distinctive characteristics of English royalism, more robust than
its counterparts in the other nations.
The political, social and economic changes which overtook England
in the early seventeenth century forced Parliament to adapt from a
medieval institution into one with authority over all facets of
society; studies focus on particular cases. The political, social
and economic changes which overtook England in the early
seventeenth century were both powerful and dramatic, forcing
Parliament to adapt from a medieval institution into one with
authority over all facets ofsociety. Dynastic change, union with
Scotland, fiscal reform, civil war, revolution and Restoration
required Parliament not only to be at work, but also to discover
how to work. These studies focus on change and development in three
areas: firstly, the institution of Parliament itself, exploring its
growing institutional sophistication and the problems connected
with attendance, workload and physical environment; secondly, on
Parliament's role within theinstitutional set-up of the
constitution, and the structure and relationships of power within
the governance of the country; and thirdly, on the public
perception of Parliament, and the practicalities of the
relationship between Parliament and the wider world. Contributors:

This collection of essays on the alternative establishments
which both Presbyterians and Catholics attempted to create in
Britain and Ireland offers a dynamic new perspective on the
evolution of post-reformation religious communities. Deriving from
the Insular Christianity project in Dublin, the book combines
essays by some of the leading scholars in the field with work by
brilliant and upcoming researchers.
The contributions, all of which were commissioned, range from
synoptic essays which fill in gaps in the existing historiography
to tightly coherent research essays that break new ground with
regard to a series of central institutional and intellectual issues
and problems.
This is a book which will appeal to all those interested in the
religious history of early modern Britain and Ireland.
