Bireley explores the anti-Machavellian tradition of sixteenth- and
seventeenth-century Europe and the writers who cultivated it,
including Giovanni Botero and Justus Lipsius. The tradition
produced an international political literature that is immensely
important for understanding the Counter-Reformation, Baroque
culture, and early modern politics and diplomacy. Originally
published in 1990. A UNC Press Enduring Edition - UNC Press

Confirming what historians have long suspected--that the influence
of a court confessor could be crucial for the formation of
policy--Bireley explores the relationship between Ferdinand and
Lamormaini during the Thirty Years War. The author shows how
Lamormaini planned for the restoration of Catholicism in Germany
and documents in detail his influence on Ferdinand, his conflict
with Ferdinand's first minister, and his relationships with other
important figures in Vienna and Rome.

This text argues that early modern Catholicism, the period known
more traditionally as the Counter Reformation, was both shaped by
and an active response to the profound changes of the 16th century,
including: the growth of the state; economic expansion; social
dislocation; and the Reformation.
Niccolo Machiavelli's seminal work, The Prince, argued that a ruler
could not govern morally and be successful. Giovanni Botero
disputed this argument and proposed a system for the maintenance
and expansion of a state that remained moral in character. Founding
an anti-Machiavellian tradition that aimed to refute Machiavelli in
practice, Botero is an important figure in early modern political
thought, though he remains relatively unknown. His most notable
work, Della ragion di Stato, first popularised the term 'reason of
state' and made a significant contribution to a major political
debate of the time - the perennial issue of the relationship
between politics and morality - and the book became a political
'bestseller' in the late sixteenth and the seventeenth century.
This translation of the 1589 volume introduces Botero to a wider
Anglophone readership and extends this influential text to a modern
audience of students and scholars of political thought.
Emperor Ferdinand II (1619-37) stands out as a crucial figure in
the Counter-Reformation in central Europe, a leading player in the
Thirty Years War, the most important ruler in the consolidation of
the Habsburg monarchy, and the emperor who reinvigorated the office
after its decline under his two predecessors. This is the first
biography since a long-outdated one written in German in 1978, and
the first ever in English. It looks at his reign as territorial
ruler of Inner Austria from 1598 until his election as emperor and
especially at the influence of his mother, the formidable
Archduchess Maria, in order to understand his later policies as
emperor. This book focuses on the consistency of his policies and
the profound influence of religion throughout his career, and
follows the contest at court between those who favored
consolidation of the Habsburg lands and those who aimed for
expansion in the empire.

From 1618 to 1648 Christian princes waged the first pan-European
war. Brought about in part by the entrenched passions of the
Reformation and Counter Reformation, the Thirty Years War
inevitably drew in the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits, who stood at
the vanguard of Catholic reform. This book investigates the
Jesuits' role during the war at the four Catholic courts of Vienna,
Munich, Paris and Madrid and the challenge to the Jesuit superior
general in Rome to lead a truly international organisation through
a period of rising international conflict. War goals varied and
changed at the courts as the conflict progressed. Advocates of
'holy war' contended with moderates, or politiques. This book
brings to light the extent to which the Thirty Years War was a
religious war and it shows how ideas about the proper relationship
between religion and politics shifted under the pressure of events.
