Big Sur's scenic grandeur and formidable landscapes have inspired
countless artists and writers to capture the essence of Big Sur's
magic. Early pioneers struggled to carve out their meager
farms and ranchos, a few ships plied the treacherous rocky
coastline, some losing their precious cargos at night to vicious
storms, gold miners worked the ghost town of Manchester, while
loggers stripped tanbark, giant redwoods were harvested, and
ranchers exported grizzly bears by boats, and more recently
thousands of hippies tried out their culture on the fragile
environment. Those who survived it all inspired this book of
tales.
The book is a plain English guide to the use of plant names and the
conventions for writing them as governed by the International Code
of Botanical Nomenclature and the International Code of
Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants. It covers the naming of wild
plants, plants modified by humans, why plant names change, their
pronunciation and hints to help remember them. The final section
provides a detailed guide to websites and published resources.
"Plant Names" incorporates the latest information and research in
the recently published Botanical and Cultivated Plant codes in an
easy to read format, and offers a definitive guide to using the
myriad names, including marketing names, on plant labels.
Steven Berkoff is the playwright, director and actor whom theatre
scholars have until now chosen to ignore. Yet this notorious
Cockney enfant terrible has left an imprint on modern British
theatre is as impossible to ignore as his presence on the stage.
This study of this contentious, larger-than-life figure examines
the strategies adopted by Berkoff in the construction and
projection of his multifaceted public persona. into the dynamic
processes involved in the self-mythologization of a theatre artist
famously concerned with revealing himself through his plays and
writings, Robert Cross covers all of Berkoff's works, including
Greek, East, Kvetch and Metamorphosis, as well as looking at his
choice of film roles, including Octopussy and The Krays. With its
specific approach, this text attempts to fill a large gap in
theatre scholarship and also attempts to contribute to our
understanding of the role of peformance in identity formation in
general. academic researchers and teachers involved in theatre and
drama studies, English literature, cultural and film studies and
psychology should find this long-awaited and lively study both
provocative and informative.
