This full-color field guide is an indispensable companion to the most popular neotropical ecotourism destination: Costa Rica. Featuring all the mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods that one is likely to see on a trip to the rainforest (as well as those secretive creatures such as the jaguar that are difficult to glimpse), The Wildlife of Costa Rica is the guide to have when encountering trogons, tapirs, and tarantulas.

In addition to providing details for identifying animals along with interesting facts about their natural history, this guide offers tips for seeing them in the wild. Costa Rica, a peaceful nation with many and diverse animal species, is one of the best places in the world for wildlife watching and nature study. It has an excellent system of national parks and reserves, a wide choice of ecolodges, and many professionally trained tourist guides. It is possible to leave the capital city of San Jose and, just a few hours later, visit a high-elevation cloud forest, dense rainforest, savanna-like plain, or coastal habitat, each with a unique collection of animal species.

This new lightweight field guide provides nature enthusiasts visiting Costa Rica with the best introduction to the country's amazing diversity of wildlife. It is the first general field guide to Costa Rica to combine the most sought-after features:

treatment of all major phyla in the country;

coverage of the animals most likely and most desirable to be seen;

more than 600 detailed illustrations integrated with the text (the preferred method of animal identification in the wild);

full species accounts including ID points, range and habitat, size, and behaviors;

a wealth of natural history information, including more than 20 photographic natural history features; and

tips for seeing animals."

The Book of Puka-Puka is not about travel, it is about staying still. It is about living as a conspicuous stranger and slowly allowing yourself to become absorbed into the ways of an ancient, indigenous community. This book was not composed by a colonial administrator, a missionary or an anthropologist, but by a hedonistic South Sea trader. This young American fishes, picnics, swims, sleeps and falls in love but fortunately he also listens out for good stories.

Birds of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao is the essential guide for anyone traveling to those islands. It showcases the more than 280 species seen on Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao and provides descriptions of and directions to the best places to bird, from the famous white sand beaches to hidden watering holes to the majestic national parks. Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao-the "ABCs"-located in the southwestern Caribbean, not far from Venezuela, share fascinating ecological features with the West Indies as well as the South American mainland, making birding on the islands unique. The identification portion of the book features endemic subspecies such as the Brown-throated Parakeet; a wide variety of wintering North American migrants; spectacular restricted-range northern South American species such as the Yellow-shouldered Parrot, Bare-eyed Pigeon, Troupial, Ruby-topaz Hummingbird, and Yellow Oriole; and West Indian species including the Pearly-eyed Thrasher and Caribbean Elaenia. Colorful introductory sections provide readers with a brief natural history of the islands, detailing the geography, geology, and general ecology of each. In the site guide that follows, Jeffrey V. Wells and Allison Childs Wells share their more than two decades of experience in the region, providing directions to the best birding spots. Clear, easy-to-read maps accompany each site description, along with notes about the species that birders are likely to find. The identification section is arranged in classic field guide format and offers vivid descriptions of each bird, along with tips on how to identify them by sight and sound. The accounts also include current status and seasonality, if relevant, and common names in English, Dutch, and Papiamento, often inspired by the unique voices of the birds, such as the "chibichibi" (Bananaquit) and "choco" (Burrowing Owl). The accompanying color plates feature the beautiful work of illustrator Robert Dean. The final section, on conservation, raises awareness about threats facing the birds and the habitats on which they rely and summarizes conservation initiatives and needs, offering recommendations for each island.

Birders in Central America have long known that Nicaragua is one of the best birding locations in the world, and with tourism to the country on the upswing, birders from the rest of the world are now coming to the same conclusion. The largest country in Central America, Nicaragua is home to 763 resident and passage birds, by latest count. Because of its unique topography-the country is relatively flat compared to its mountainous neighbors to the north and south-it forms a geographical barrier of sorts, which means that many birds that originate in North America reach their southernmost point in Nicaragua, while many birds from South America reach their northernmost point in the country. There are few places in the world where you can find both a Roadrunner and a Scarlet Macaw. Birds of Nicaragua features descriptions and illustrations of all 763 species currently identified in the country, along with information about 44 additional species that are likely to appear in the coming years. Range maps, based on years of field research, are color-coded. Other features include a richly illustrated anatomical features section, a checklist, a visual guide to vultures and raptors in flight, and a quick-find index.

The sixth and final volume documenting the work of an iconic American artist The sixth and final volume of this exceptional catalogue raisonne project features over 360 works made by John Baldessari (1931-2020) between 2011 and 2019. Here, Baldessari continues his longstanding tradition of borrowing from artists as varied as David Hockney, Giotto, Gustave Courbet, Maria Lassnig, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Giorgio Morandi, and Jackson Pollock. Many of the works in this volume are a testament to the artist's fascination and engagement with art from previous eras. In one example, Baldessari's 2012 series "Double Bill" combines scenes from pairs of paintings, such as a Willem de Kooning face atop a Jean Dubuffet body, with the words, "...And Dubuffet" painted beneath: Baldessari is effectively collaborating with artists he has revered for years. This volume also surveys Baldessari's complete film and video output, from 1968 to 2004, as well as the artist's books he made, from 1972 to 2019. Additionally, an appendix catalogues works, mostly pre-1974, that were unknown at the time Volume 1 was published. Published in association with Marian Goodman Gallery

The isthmus of Panama, where North and South America meet, hosts more bird species than all of North America. More accessible than ever to birdwatchers and other ecotourists, the country has become a premier neotropical birding and nature tourism destination in recent years. The Birds of Panama will be an essential tool for the new generation of birders traveling in search of Panama's spectacular avifauna.

This user-friendly, portable, and affordable identification guide features:

large color illustrations of more than 900 species;

the first range maps published to show the distribution of Panama's birds;

concise text that describes field marks for identification, as well as habitat, behavior, and vocalizations;

range maps and species accounts face illustration pages for quick, easy reference;

the inclusion of North American migrants and seabirds, as well as female and juvenile plumage variations;

an up-to-date species list for the country that reflects recent additions, taxonomic splits, and other changes in classification.

Panama's unique geography, small size, and varied habitats make it possible to see a vast diversity of birds within a short time. Its western and central areas harbor representatives of species found in Central America; species characteristic of South America may be found in the east. In the winter, birds from northern climes are commonly found in Panama as migrants. This is the one field guide the novice or experienced birder needs to identify birds in the field in Panama's diverse habitats."

With cover artwork specially created by Ruscha, this book documents hundreds of projects and miscellaneous ephemera produced by the artist alongside his main oeuvre-including installations, films, painted book covers, contour gauge profiles, and more Introducing readers to the stunning breadth of Edward Ruscha's (b. 1937) creative output over the course of his entire life, this book includes materials dating back to his childhood and extending to his present-day output. The projects featured here fall outside Ruscha's production of paintings, drawings, prints, and artists' books. Many of these are unknown and most are reproduced here for the first time. Composed of three sections-Projects and Ephemera; Contour Gauge Profiles; and Painted Book Covers-the book offers Ruscha enthusiasts and scholars a hitherto unknown aspect of Ruscha's practice, while also showing how these projects coincide with, and sometimes even prefigure, the artistic work for which he is best known. The approximately 270 painted book covers, begun in 1990, utilize found books as support for small paintings and drawings. The 57 contour gauge profiles are silhouette-like profiles made using a mechanical device for reproducing contours. The largest section, Projects and Ephemera, consists of installations, sculpture and objects, films, book and poster design, utilitarian works, and more. Distributed for Gagosian

Edited by Robert Dean and Lisa Turney with an essay by Hal Foster, "Evening in America," which analyzes Ruscha's paintings of the 1990s.

The period covered by Volume 5 comprises 195 paintings, reproduced in full color. A highlight is the complete layout of the 1995 Denver Central Library project, which Ruscha described as "a rolling historical landscape of Colorado and the West." Other notable series of this period include the "Cityscape" paintings, which resemble ransom notes, and a group of images of clock faces titled after the names of American cars and car manufacturers. This volume also includes numerous documentary photographs, a selection of Ruscha's sketchbook pages, and complete bibliographic references and exhibition histories.

Not every artist is suited to catalogue raisonne treatment, but the oeuvre of Ed Ruscha, comprised as it is of series, repetitions and documentations, looks great under such clerical scrutiny. Projected as a seven-volume edition under the guidance of Robert Dean and Lisa Turvey, the Ruscha Catalogue Raisonne Project lends the serial quality of Ruscha's early artist's books to the entire body of his work, while providing a definitive resource for fans, scholars and collectors in the most efficient style possible. The three previous volumes collected works from 1958-1970, 1971-1982 and 1983-1987. Such esteemed artists and critics as Walter Hopps, Lawrence Weiner, Dave Hickey, Peter Wollen and Yves-Alain Bois have contributed essays celebrating and reviewing Ruscha's steadily incremental accomplishment. Each volume of the catalogue has a stitched binding and a cloth cover with silver-colored embossing, protected with an embossed slipcase. Volume 4 is a co-publication of Gagosian Gallery and Steidl and documents 198 paintings from 1988 to 1992. In addition to almost 200 color reproductions, it includes a comprehensive exhibition history, bibliography and biographical chronology, as well as a text by artist Mel Bochner and an essay by art historian Briony Fer.

This is the third volume in the ongoing series documenting Ruschas entire corpus of paintings. As in the previous two volumes, each painting is given a double-page spread with exhibition and bibliographic history, and is reproduced in colour. The artists notebook sketches for paintings are reproduced in facsimile.This volume contains 165 paintings and, in addition, includes a major public commission for the Philip Johnson-designed Miami-Dade Public Library, which was a watershed mark for Ruscha. Paintings done immediately prior to this commission can be seen as a summation of the artists earlier preoccupations and techniques, while those done after the commission show a major shift in Ruschas direction occasioned by the artists use of airbrush techniques to produce dark, atmospheric canvases that correspond to film noir and such Los Angeles writers as Raymond Chandler. The book includes an introductory essay by the editor, Robert Dean, and a personal tribute by artist Lawrence Weiner. It contains a chronology to 1987, as well as a comprehensive bibliography and list of exhibitions.

An accessible, concise reference source on Polynesia's complex mythology, product of a culture little known outside its home. Encounters with the West introduced Polynesian mythology to the world—and sealed its fate as a casualty of colonialism. But for centuries before the Europeans came, that mythology was as vast as the triangle of ocean in which it flourished, as diverse as the people it served, and as complex as the mythologies of Greece and Rome. Students, researchers, and enthusiasts can follow vivid retellings of stories of creation, death, and great voyages, tracking variations from island to island. They can use the book's reference section for information on major deities, heroes, elves, fairies, and recurring themes, as well as the mythic implications of everything from dogs and volcanoes to the hula, Easter Island, and tattooing (invented in the South Pacific and popularized by returning sailors).
