Values and the Reflective Point of View - On Expressivism, Self-Knowledge and Agency (Paperback): Robert Dunn Values and the Reflective Point of View - On Expressivism, Self-Knowledge and Agency (Paperback)
Robert Dunn
R1,400 Discovery Miles 14 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Values are inescapable. They pervade and shape our psychology, our agency, and our lives as reflective and self-knowing subjects. This book explores the crucial ways in which values figure within reflection and thereby shape our theoretical and practical lives, against the backdrop of an expressivist moral psychology that is sensitive to the vicissitudes of valuing. Combining a discussion of the role that values play within reflection with a critique of a range of influential contemporary views in moral psychology and the theory of agency, Dunn shows how such views obscure or distort the nature of that role and that there is a 'natural fit' between an expressivist account of values and the best account of the role of values in the lives of reflective agents. Writers discussed include Simon Blackburn, Michael E. Bratman, Donald Davidson, Harry Frankfurt, Christine Korsgaard, Thomas Nagel and J. David Velleman. The book is also an important addition to the literature on self-knowledge. Dunn argues that, by reasoning about truth and values, we possess a unique, non-observational way of coming to know our own minds and hearts, together with what we are going to make happen in the world. The discussion criticizes recent contributions to the theory of self-knowledge by Richard Moran and J. David Velleman.

A New Book of the Grotesques - Contemporary Approaches to Sherwood Anderson's Early Fiction (Paperback): Robert Dunne A New Book of the Grotesques - Contemporary Approaches to Sherwood Anderson's Early Fiction (Paperback)

The first extensive treatment of Sherwood Anderson's work from a postmodern perspective Sherwood Anderson, remembered chiefly as a writer of short stories about life in the Midwest at the turn of the century, was acknowledged as an innovator of the short story form and a major influence on such writers as Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner. Valuable critical studies have examined his works from biographical, New Critical, or psychoanalytical approaches, but contemporary criticism on Anderson has been nearly nonexistent. A New Book of the Grotesques (the title is adapted from the first tale in Winesburg, Ohio) does not challenge previous studies of Anderson as much as it looks at Anderson's early fiction from contemporary interpretative methodologies, particularly from poststructuralist approaches. With this study, author Robert Dunne breaks new ground in Sherwood Anderson scholarship: his is the first sustained, full-length critical work on Anderson from a postmodern theoretical perspective and is the first study of a substantial body of Anderson's work to be published in more than thirty years. A New Book of the Grotesques is an important critical study that adds significantly to the field and to the understanding of Sherwood Anderson's fiction and the modernist period.

Computers and the Law - An Introduction to Basic Legal Principles and Their Application in Cyberspace (Hardcover): Robert Dunne Computers and the Law - An Introduction to Basic Legal Principles and Their Application in Cyberspace (Hardcover)
Robert Dunne
R2,255 Discovery Miles 22 550 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Computers and the Law provides readers with an introduction to the legal issues associated with computing - particularly in the massively networked context of the Internet. Assuming no previous knowledge of the law or any special knowledge of programming or computer science, this textbook offers undergraduates of all disciplines and professionals in the computing industry an understanding of basic legal principles and an awareness of the peculiarities associated with legal issues in cyberspace. This is not a law school casebook, but rather a variety of carefully chosen, relevant cases presented in redacted form. The full cases are available on an ancillary Web site. The pervasiveness of computing in modern society has generated numerous legal ambiguities. This book introduces readers to the fundamental workings of the law in physical space and suggests the opportunity to create new types of laws with nontraditional goals.
