The New Deal remains at the center of the national debate
concerning the role and function of government--a controversy that
reflects increasingly deep divisions within the American body
politic. In an attempt to clarify and reframe the underlying
issues, the authors of this book examine the principles, political
methods, institutions, and programs that came out of the New Deal
and assess their consequences and implications for the future. In
the opening chapter, Robert Eden reviews changing public
assessments of the New Deal and the questions that remain most
divisive. Subsequent authors address specific aspects of the New
Deal itself, such as farm programs, and regulatory, bureaucractic,
and administrative reforms. Others explore the controversial issues
that Roosevelt's political philosophy and programs raised. Among
these are constitutional questions, enlightened administration, the
presidency, electoral realignment divisions and party politics, and
the political significance of the welfare state. The concluding
chapter discusses the New Deal legacy in today's Democratic party.
Placing contemporary political issues in a broad, constructive
framework, this book provides new perspectives on a pivotal episode
in modern American history and gives us a deeper understanding of
the political, economic, and constitutional challenges we currently
face.
In Active Duty: Public Administration as Democratic Statesmanship,
a distinguished group of contributors examines the role of the
American civil service under the Constitution. The common concern
that unites the otherwise diverse approaches of the authors is the
conception of public administration as a particular form of
political activity. The contributors relate administrative issues
to the broader questions of political life, such as political
judgment and responsibility, the Constitution and
constitutionalism, and the promotion of human liberty and the
common good. They aim to encourage the administrator to become a
democratic statesman. Present and prospective American civil
servants, as well as political scientists and political
philosophers, will find this book of interest.
This Is A New Release Of The Original 1842 Edition.
Originally published in 1924 and available here in English for the
first time, The Enemy's House Divided is Charles de Gaulle's
analysis of the major errors that led the Germans to disaster in
World War I. Based partly on observations made during his
internment as a prisoner of war from 1916 to 1918, it can be seen
as the foundation for everything he wrote in the 1920s and 1930s in
the shadow of German resurgence and for much of what he said and
did after the Nazi victory in June of 1940. To de Gaulle, the
German conduct of the Great War and the debacle of 1918 was the
greatest moral disaster ever to befall a modern civilized political
community. He seeks to identify the internecine causes of the
collapse of the German war effort in 1918 and of the subsequent
dissolution of the German Empire. His diagnosis of the profound
moral crisis that unfolded in Germany during World War I points
forward to 1940, for de Gaulle understood the fall of France, above
all, as a moral catastrophe for the French. His first book, it is
also a key document of de Gaulle's ""philosophy of action,""
introducing his statesmanship to the world with its deliberate and
studied critique of the perils of Nietzsche's philosophical
initiative.
