Robert Evans
R4,590 Discovery Miles 45 900 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This study seeks to make a contribution to current debates about the nature of Wirkungsgeschichte or reception history and its place in contemporary Biblical Studies. The author addresses three crucial questions: the relationship between reception history and historical-critical exegesis; the form of reception history itself, with a focus on the issue of which acts of reception are selected and valorized; and the role of tradition, pre-judgements and theology in relation to reception history. Disagreements about these matters contribute to what many characterise as the fragmentation of the discipline of biblical studies. The study champions the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer as a theoretical resource for understanding biblical interpretation, and a way of holding together with integrity the varied activities undertaken within the discipline. Each aspect of the argument is illustrated, tested and further explored with reference to the post-history of exhortations in the New Testament to 'be subject'. These have been widely cited and applied for 2,000 years - in literature, law and politics as well as in theological traditions. In this way the study makes a contribution not just to the theory but also the practice of reception history.

This book reports the results of a research project that investigated assessment methods aimed at supporting and improving inquiry-based approaches in European science, technology and mathematics (STM) education. The findings were used to influence policy makers with guidelines for ensuring that assessment enhances learning. The book provides insights about: - The concept of competence within the STM domains and its relevance for education - The conceptualisation and teaching of four key competences: scientific inquiry, mathematical problem-solving, design processes, and innovation. - Fundamental aspects of the two main purposes of assessment, formative and summative, the relations between the two purposes and ways of linking them. - The main challenges related to the uptake of formative assessment in daily teaching-learning practices in STM and specifically, the usability of formative on-the-fly dialogue, structured assessment dialogue, peer assessment and written teacher feedback. - The systemic support measures and tools teachers need in order to integrate formative assessment of student learning into their classroom practices and how it can conflict with summative assessment practices. - How research-based strategies for the formative use of assessment can be adapted to various European educational traditions to ensure their effective use and avoid undesirable consequences. - How relevant stakeholders can be invited to take co-ownership of research results and how a productive partnership between researchers, policy makers, and teachers can be established. - Concrete research vistas that are still needed in international assessment research.

Harry Collins, Robert Evans, Darrin Durant, Martin Weinel
R2,003 Discovery Miles 20 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The rise of populism in the West has led to attacks on the legitimacy of scientific expertise in political decision making. This book explores the differences between populism and pluralist democracy and their relationship with science. Pluralist democracy is characterised by respect for minority choices and a system of checks and balances that prevents power being concentrated in one group, while populism treats minorities as traitorous so as to concentrate power in the government. The book argues that scientific expertise - and science more generally -- should be understood as one of the checks and balances in pluralist democracies. It defends science as 'craftwork with integrity' and shows how its crucial role in democratic societies can be rethought and that it must be publicly explained. This book will be of value to scholars and practitioners working across STS as well as to anyone interested in decoding the populist agenda against science.

The Kid Stays in the Picture (Hardcover, New): Robert Evans The Kid Stays in the Picture (Hardcover, New)
Robert Evans
R1,227 Discovery Miles 12 270 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Far more expansive than You'll Never Eat Lunch in This Town Again, The Kid Stays in the Picture by Hollywood giant and legendary "bad boy" Robert Evans is an intimate and fascinating account of his rise, fall, and rise again in show business that makes for a harrowing read. From his early days in radio to popularizing "women in pants" as part of Evan-Picone, to being "discovered" by Norma Shearer and Darryl Zanuck, to, bizarrely enough, becoming the first actor to ever run a motion picture studio, this is a page-turning autobiography more gripping than fiction at its best. Under Evans's aegis, Paramount Pictures went from the cellar to the penthouse, with such movies as The Odd Couple, Rosemary's Baby, Love Story, The Godfather, and Chinatown. An extraordinary raconteur, Evans spares no one, least of all himself. From Errol Flynn, Ava Gardner, and Jimmy Cagney to Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, and Sharon Stone, here is Hollywood, revealed as never before. Gambling with Mike Todd; fighting Francis Coppola; cajoling Mia Farrow and Faye Dunaway; on the hot seat with Charles Bluhdorn and Stanley Jaffe, Robert Evans, the producer's producer, has seen and done it all. Laced throughout this roller-coaster read are his fascinating liaisons with some of the world's most beautiful women, including his marriage and divorce to Ali MacGraw and Phyllis George. The Kid Stays in the Picture not only chronicles Hollywood's last half century, but its second golden age as well. This is a man whose life journey unfolds far more adventurously than any of the films he's produced. His candor is shocking: the lurid dark years of the '80s; his cocaine arrest; his implication in what were dubbed the "Cotton ClubMurders"; his thoughts of suicide; his self-committal and escape from a mental institution. And lastly, the impossible! Being back in the catbird seat of power, once again sending shock waves through Hollywood and the world. Already hailed by Variety as "one of the best Hollywood memoirs ever published", The Kid Stays in the Picture is one life story you'll never forget.

Clinics in Developmental Medicine No. 163

Children with craniosynostosis are born with congenital deformities of the face and skull. In severe cases associated problems are common. The child who is not properly cared for can end up blind, deaf and with severe learning difficulties. In addition, they may be left with unacceptable facial deformities. Outside specialized craniofacial units, there is at present nowhere for those involved in primary or secondary care to go for help with the many practical problems that these children present. In this book, a distinguished team of editors have assembled experts in the field to introduce the non-craniofacial specialist to what can be achieved and how they can contribute to the child's welfare. It will be essential reading for paediatricians seeking practical information about the management of these disorders, and for specialists in neurosurgery, ENT, ophthalmology, plastic surgery, maxillo-facial surgery, orthodontics, psychology, genetics, anaesthesia, audiology and speech therapy.

Robert Evans's The Kid Stays in the Picture is universally recognized as the greatest, most outrageous, most unforgettable show business memoir ever written. The basis of a groundbreaking, award-winning documentary film, it remains the gold standard of Hollywood storytelling.

The only actor ever to run a Hollywood studio, Evans emerged from near-obscurity in the mid-1960s to rescue Paramount, one of the great studios of the Golden Age, from near-bankruptcy. A self-confessed "half-assed actor," Evans proved a genius producer and studio chief, drawing on his irresistible combination of instinct, smarts, showmanship, and bravado to take Paramount from the basement to the penthouse with such films as The Odd Couple, Rosemary's Baby, Love Story, The Godfather, and Chinatown. He lived a swashbuckling life, partying with lifetime friends like Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, and Dustin Hoffman, consulting with power players like Henry Kissinger, and squiring a host of dazzling women including his wives Ali McGraw, Catherine Oxenberg, and Phyllis George. After a decade of triumph, he lost everything in a spectacular flameout of cocaine and bad business decisions, yet survived it all--and lived to tell the tale.

An extraordinary raconteur, Evans spares no one, least of all himself. Filled with starring roles for everyone from Ava Gardner to Marlon Brando to Sharon Stone, The Kid Stays in the Picture is sharp, witty, and self-aggrandizing and self-lacerating in equal measure.

This new It Books edition, the first in more than a decade, will feature a new foreword by the author. And simultaneous with this edition will come a first-ever ebook rollout--including both a regular edition and an enhanced ebook with clips from Evans's celebrated, Grammy-nominated audiobook and the famous 2002 documentary.

"Mixing science, humor, and grossly irresponsible self-experimentation, Evans paints a vivid picture of how bad habits built the world we know and love." David Wong, author of John Dies at the End History has never been more fun or more intoxicating. Guns, germs, and steel might have transformed us from hunter-gatherers into modern man, but booze, sex, trash talk, and tripping built our civilization.Crackededitor Robert Evans brings his signature dogged research and lively insight to uncover the many and magnificent ways vice has influenced history, from the prostitute-turned-empress who scored a major victory for women s rights to the beer that helped create and destroy South America's first empire. And Evans goes deeper than simply writing about ancient debauchery; he recreates some of history's most enjoyable (and most painful) vices and includes guides so you can follow along at home. You ll learn how to: Trip like a Greek philosopher. Rave like your Stone Age ancestors. Get drunk like a Sumerian. Smoke a nose pipe like a pre Columbian Native American. A celebration of the brave, drunken pioneers who built our civilization one seemingly bad decision at a time, A Brief History of Vice explores a side of the past that mainstream history books prefer to hide."

These essays arose out of lectures given in Oxford to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1848 revolutions in Europe. They comprise judicicious summaries of the existing state of knowledge, as well as insights and unfamiliar information. The book also seeks to place the revolutionary events in their wider context: apart from chapters covering the main centres of disturbance in France, Germany, Italy, and the Habsburg lands, there are discussions of the situation in Britain and Russia, which were affected but not convulse and by the disorders elsewhere of reactions in the United States of America and of the symbolism of 1848 for the later democratic, radical, and socialist movements. 1848 marked the first breakdown of traditional authority across much of the continent, and as such is of profound significance in the development of modern European politics as a whole.
