Dimensional Approaches in Diagnostic Classification - Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V (Paperback): John E. Helzer,... Dimensional Approaches in Diagnostic Classification - Refining the Research Agenda for DSM-V (Paperback)

Since its initial publication more than 50 years ago, the DSM has systematized the complex intellectual and clinical process of diagnosing mentally ill persons through the use of categories and classification. The manuals have provided a consistent diagnostic language for clinical work, research, and teaching; have established a common international taxonomic standard; and have provided psychiatrists with a means of communicating with patients and the public. With a new iteration of the DSM on the horizon, the APA has initiated a multiphase research review process designed to set the stage for the fifth revision, due to be published in 2013.

This book brings together the most promising research presented at the conference "The Future of Psychiatric Diagnosis: Refining the Research Agenda," which was convened by the APA, in collaboration with the World Health Organization and the U.S. National Institutes of Health. Conferees were challenged to go beyond the current categorical definitions set forth in DSM-III and DSM-IV and suggest ways of incorporating more quantitative, dimensional concepts into DSM-V. The resulting work: - Addresses the challenge of creating dimensional measures that are compatible with existing categorical definitions and do not unduly disrupt clinical practice- Applies a dimensional approach to a broad range of diagnoses, including substance dependence, major depressive episode, psychosis, anxiety disorders, developmental psychopathology, and personality disorders- Facilitates the development of broadly agreed upon criteria that researchers worldwide can use in planning and conducting future research exploring the etiology and pathophysiology of mental disorders- Identifies and encourages the empirical research necessary to allow informed decision making regarding deficiencies acknowledged in DSM-IV- Promotes international collaboration with the objective of eliminating the remaining disparities between DSM-V and the International Classification of Diseases Mental and Behavioural Disorders Section, the next edition of which is due to be released in 2014.

The book's painstaking scholarship and thoughtful conclusions should stimulate interest in finding new ways of combining categorical and dimensional approaches in psychiatric nosology. Clinicians and researchers in the United States and the international psychiatric community will discover, in these pages, the beginnings of a new, quantitative methodology that represents the next stage in the evolution of DSM.

Oxford Textbook of Psychopathology (Hardcover, 4th Revised edition): Robert F. Krueger, Paul H. Blaney Oxford Textbook of Psychopathology (Hardcover, 4th Revised edition)
Robert F. Krueger, Paul H. Blaney
R3,969 Discovery Miles 39 690 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Now in its Fourth Edition, the acclaimed Oxford Textbook of Psychopathology aims for both depth and breadth, with a focus on adult disorders and special attention given to personality disorders. It provides an unparalleled guide for professionals and students alike. Esteemed editors Robert F. Krueger and Paul H. Blaney selected the most eminent researchers in abnormal psychology to provide thorough coverage and to discuss notable issues in the various pathologies which are their expertise. This fourth edition is fully updated and also reflects alternative, emerging perspectives in the field (e.g., the NIMH's Research Domain Criteria Initiative; RDoC, the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology; HiTOP). The book exposes readers to exceptional scholarship, the history and philosophy of psychopathology, the logic of the best approaches to current disorders, and an expert outlook on what researchers and mental health professionals will be facing in the years to come. This volume will be useful for all mental health workers, including clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers, and as a textbook focused on understanding psychopathology in depth for anyone wishing to be up to date on the latest developments in the field.

The Oxford Handbook of Integrative Health Science (Hardcover): Carol D. Ryff, Robert F. Krueger The Oxford Handbook of Integrative Health Science (Hardcover)
Carol D. Ryff, Robert F. Krueger
R5,412 Discovery Miles 54 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most health research to date has been pursued within the confines of scientific disciplines that are guided by their own targeted questions and research strategies. Although useful, such inquiries are inherently limited in advancing understanding the interplay of wide-ranging factors that shape human health. The Oxford Handbook of Integrative Health Science embraces an integrative approach that seeks to put together sociodemographic factors (age, gender, race, socioeconomic status) known to contour rates of morbidity and mortality with psychosocial factors (emotion, cognition, personality, well-being, social connections), behavioral factors (health practices) and stress exposures (caregiving responsibilities, divorce, discrimination) also known to influence health. A further overarching theme is to explicate the biological pathways through which these various effects occur. The biopsychosocial leitmotif that inspires this approach demands new kinds of studies wherein wide-ranging assessments across different domains are assembled on large population samples. The MIDUS (Midlife in the U.S.) national longitudinal study exemplifies such an integrative study, and all findings presented in this collection draw on MIDUS. The way the study evolved, via collaboration of scientists working across disciplinary lines, and its enthusiastic reception from the scientific community are all part of the larger story told. Embedded within such tales are important advances in the identification of key protective or vulnerability factors: these pave the way for practice and policy initiatives seeking to improve the nation's health.

Handbook of Research Methods in Personality Psychology (Paperback): Richard W. Robins, R. Chris Fraley, Robert F. Krueger Handbook of Research Methods in Personality Psychology (Paperback)

Bringing together leading investigators, this comprehensive Handbook is a one-stop reference for anyone planning or conducting research on personality. It provides up-to-date analyses of the rich array of methodological tools available today, giving particular attention to real-world theoretical and logistical challenges and how to overcome them. In chapters filled with detailed, practical examples, readers are shown step by step how to formulate a suitable research design, select and use high-quality measures, and manage the complexities of data analysis and interpretation. Coverage ranges from classic methods like self-report inventories and observational procedures to such recent innovations as neuroimaging and genetic analyses.

Contemporary Directions in Psychopathology - Scientific Foundations of the DSM-V and ICD-11 (Hardcover): Theodore Millon,... Contemporary Directions in Psychopathology - Scientific Foundations of the DSM-V and ICD-11 (Hardcover)
Theodore Millon, Robert F. Krueger, Erik Simonsen
R3,307 Discovery Miles 33 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This forward-thinking volume grapples with critical questions surrounding the mechanisms underlying mental disorders and the systems used for classifying them. Edited and written by leading international authorities, many of whom are actively involved with the development of DSM-V and ICD-11, the book integrates biological and psychosocial perspectives. It provides balanced analyses of such hot-button issues as the role of social context and culture in psychopathology and the pros and cons of categorical versus dimensional approaches to diagnosis. Cutting-edge diagnostic instruments and research methods are reviewed. Throughout, contributors highlight the implications of current theoretical and empirical advances for understanding real-world clinical problems and developing more effective treatments.
