Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.

werde ich versuchen, diese W uchsformen physiologisch zu erkliiren.
Mit wenig Worten will ich auch derjenigen Untersuchungen Erwiihnung
thun, die sich auf die Wachsthumsgesetze beziehen, welche der
Entwickelung gleichartiger, geschlossener Waldbestiinde zu Grunde
Hegen. Auf dem Wege der Einzelforschung hatte ich etwa 130 Wald
bestiinde in sorgfiiltigster Weise untersucht und unter Benutzung
von Weiserbestiinden eine Reihe Erfahrungs- tafeln aufgesteIIt, die
in hohem Grade geeignet waren, einen Einblick in das Gesetzmiissige
der Entwickelung gleichartiger Waldbestande zu verschaft'en. Der
Umstand, dass sich mir in dem noch fast viillig unbearbeiteten
Gebiete der Krankheitslehre unserer Waldbaume ein so dankbares und
durch die Schwierigkeiten, die sich dem Forscher entgegenstellen,
nur Wenigen zu- gangliches Arbeitsfeld eroft'nete, veranlasste
mich, die Fortsetzung dieser Er- tragsuntersuchungen Anderen zu
iiberlassen. lch freue mich, dass diese Arbeit dann auch durch die
forstlichen Versuchsanstalten aufgenommen ist. Wahrend ich meine
Untersuchungen in allen Theilen selbst ausfiihren musste, was
natiirlich dem Werth dieser Arbeiten zu Gute gekommen ist, benutzt
der Verein der forstlichen Versuchsanstalten ein Heer von Ar-
beitskraften und reichliche yom Staate gewahrte Geldmittel. Eine
Reihe von Arbeiten ist seitdem erschienen, die ich hier nicht im
Einzelnen ver- folgen kann, von denen ich aber nur die zuerst
erschienene, namlich die von der Konigl. Wlirttem bergischen
Versuchsanstalt veroft'entlichte Arbeit iiber den Ertrag der Fichte

oder Nutzen wurde bald das Lieblingsstudium vieler prak- tischer
Forstwirthe und den gemeinsamen Bemuhungen zahlreicher Krafte
gelang es, in einigen Decennien die Forstinsectenkunde zu einer
geachteten wissenschaftlichen Disciplin zu erheben, die ein
Gemeingut aller gebildeten Forstwirthe geworden ist. Anders stand
es mit denjenigen Pflanzenkrankheiten, die sich nicht auf
Thierbeschadigungen zuruckfuhren liessen. Ihre Erfor- schung blieb
der jungsten Zeit vorbehalten, denn erst, nachdem die botanische
Wissenschaft mit ihrer Hauptwaffe, mit dem Mikro- skop einen
klareren Einblick gewonnen hatte in den normalen Bau und in die
normalen Lebenserscheinungen der Pflanzen, nachdem insbesondere das
Studium der Pilze in den letzten Jahrzehnten durch eine Reihe der
hervorragendsten Forscher gefoerdert war, konnte die Untersuchung
der krankhaften Erscheinungen des Pflan- zenlebens mit Aussicht auf
Erfolg in Angriff genommen werden. Zwar waren in den Jahren 1833
bis 1841 drei Lehrbucher 2 der Pflanzenkrankheiten erschienen,
namlich von Fr. Unger), von 3 4 Wiegmann ) und von Meyen), welche
Zeugniss dafur ablegen, dass die Fortschritte in der Erkenntniss
des Baues und Lebens der Pflanze bei den Versuchen, die krankhaften
Erscheinungen des Pflanzenlebens zu erklaren, nicht unbenutzt
geblieben waren, die irrige Anschauung uber das Wesen der Pilze,
die voellige Unkennt- niss ihrer Entwicklungsgeschichte standen
jedoch dem klaren Ver- standniss der Krankheitsprocesse hindernd im
Wege. Insbesondere wurde die unbefangene Forschung durch den
Umstand gestoert, dass man die wissenschaftlichen Errungenschaften,
