The global population is projected to reach almost 10 billion by 2050, and food and feed production will need to increase by 70%. Wheat, maize and sorghum are three key cereals which provide nutrition for the majority of the world's population. Their production is affected by various abiotic stresses which cause significant yield losses. The effects of climate change also increase the frequency and severity of such abiotic stresses. Molecular breeding technologies offer real hope for improving crop yields. Although significant progress has been made over the last few years, there is still a need to bridge the large gap between yields in the most favorable and most stressful conditions. This book: - Provides a valuable resource for wheat, maize and sorghum scientists working on breeding and molecular biology, physiology and biotechnology. - Presents the latest in-depth research in the area of abiotic stress tolerance and yield improvements. - Contains the necessary information to allow plant breeders to apply this research to effectively breed new varieties of these crops. It provides a consolidated reference for plant breeders and crop scientists working on the challenges of enhanced crop productivity and climate change adaptability.

Robert-Henri Bautier
R4,161 Discovery Miles 41 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This selection of articles by Robert-Henri Bautier deals with the political and institutional history of France between the 6th and 12th centuries, and is above all concerned with the changing extent of the rulers' power from the rise of the Carolingians onwards. A subsequent volume will focus on the Capetians, while a further pair of volumes deal with economic history. The first studies here examine two general topics: the emergence of Paris as the undisputed capital of France, and the ceremony of Royal coronation and consecration. The following articles, on Carolingian France, reconsider the significance of the battle of Roncevaux and the importance of the region of Neustria, then study the decomposition of the Carolingian empire in Southern France and Catalonia. The last group is concerned with various aspects of the re-expansion of central power under the early Capetian kings and, finally, with the evolution of one of the fundamental organs of medieval municipal government, the echevinage.

Plant Genotyping - The DNA Fingerprinting of Plants (Hardcover): Robert Henry Plant Genotyping - The DNA Fingerprinting of Plants (Hardcover)
Robert Henry
R3,814 Discovery Miles 38 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Plant genotyping, or DNA fingerprinting of plants, is a technology that has matured and is poised for widespread practical application. Plant genotype analysis can be used for the identification of plants in commerce, plant breeding and research. This book examines the technology available and their application in the analysis of wild plant populations, germplasm collections and plant breeding. Special attention has been paid to microsatellite analysis, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and new technologies, such as microarrays and non-gel based analysis of markers.

This book studies the dynamics of political discourse in governance processes. It demonstrates the process in which political discourses become normative mechanisms, first marking socially constructed realities in politics, second playing a role in delineating the subsequent policy frames, and third influencing the public sphere.

In Europe and around the world, social policies and welfare services have faced increasing pressure in recent years as a result of political, economic, and social changes. Just as Europe was a leader in the development of the welfare state and the supportive structures of corporatist politics from the 1920s onward, Europe in particular has experienced stresses from globalization and striking innovation in welfare policies. While debates in the United Kingdom, Germany, and France often attract wide international attention, smaller European countries-Belgium, Denmark, Austria, or Finland-are often overlooked. This volume seeks to correct this unfortunate oversight as these smaller countries serve as models for reform, undertaking experiments that only later gain the attention of stymied reformers in the larger countries.

The Book of Enoch (Hardcover): Robert Henry Charles, R. H. Charles The Book of Enoch (Hardcover)
Robert Henry Charles, R. H. Charles
R721 Discovery Miles 7 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The apocryphal Book of Enoch, suppressed by the Church and then lost for many centuries, is believed to have been written in the first century or earlier. This edition-translated by British biblical scholar R. H. CHARLES (1855-1931) and first published in 1917-tells the story of the fallen angels, who appeal to Enoch the Prophet, great-grandson of Noah, to speak with God on their behalf after He banishes them from heaven. Enoch travels to heaven, describing what he sees there in detail, and speaks with the angels and ponders their nature. The book, in its original Hebrew or Aramaic, is believed to have influenced the writers of the New Testament, and while not considered canonical scripture, its apocalyptic themes continue to be highly influential today in modern popular Christian End Times fantasy, such as the Left Behind series. Students of the Bible who wish to explore related texts and those interested in foundational apocalyptic literature will find this book essential reading.

The Oxford Handbook of Indigenous Sociology (Hardcover): Maggie Walter, Tahu Kukutai, Angela Gonzales, Robert Henry The Oxford Handbook of Indigenous Sociology (Hardcover)
Maggie Walter, Tahu Kukutai, Angela Gonzales, Robert Henry
R5,404 Discovery Miles 54 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Indigenous sociology makes visible what is meaningful in the Indigenous social world. This core premise is demonstrated here via the use of the concept of the Indigenous Lifeworld in reference to the dispossessed Indigenous Peoples from Anglo-colonized first world nations. Indigenous lifeworld is built around dual intersubjectivities: within peoplehood, inclusive of traditional and ongoing culture, belief systems, practices, identity, and ways of understanding the world; and within colonized realties as marginalized peoples whose everyday life is framed through their historical and ongoing relationship with the colonizer nation state. The Oxford Handbook of Indigenous Sociology is, in part, a response to the limited space allowed for Indigenous Peoples within the discipline of sociology. The very small existing sociological literature locates the Indigenous within the non-Indigenous gaze and the Eurocentric structures of the discipline reflect a continuing reluctance to actively recognize Indigenous realities within the key social forces literature of class, gender, and race at the discipline's center. But the ambition of this volume, its editors, and its contributors is larger than a challenge to this status quo. They do not speak back to sociology, but rather, claim their own sociological space. The starting point is to situate Indigenous sociology as sociology by Indigenous sociologists. The authors in The Oxford Handbook of Indigenous Sociology, all leading and emerging Indigenous scholars, provide an authoritative, state of the art survey of Indigenous sociological thinking. The contributions in this Handbook demonstrate that the Indigenous sociological voice is a not a version of the existing sub-fields but a new sociological paradigm that uses a distinctively Indigenous methodological approach.
