Robert Henry Elliot (1837 - 1914), was an early British coffee planter in Mysore, India, and author of books on plantation life in Mysore. He arrived in Bombay in 1855 at 18 years of age. From there he sailed to Mangalore, then headed inland through the ghauts to the high plateau of Mysore where he joined Frederick Green, who had begun his plantation in 1843. The first European coffee plantation to its south had just started in 1854, while the second some 70 miles (110 km) north was being established by three Scottish planters. In 1856 Elliot started his own plantation at Bartchinhulla, Saklaspur, Mysore State. In this edition Robert Elliot shares in his own words the fascinating experiences of running a plantation in the jungles of Mysore during the early 20th century.

As Martin Kerr and Edward Lorrain walked rapidly across the park, the Doctor came to the door to meet them, meditating slightly on what he was going to do. His nephew, Edward Lorrain, had long been cautioned never to refer to anybody or anything in. the asylum, and, though he had once told his friend that his uncle took charge of people who were not quite right in their minds, never alluded further to the subject; and as there were no signs of anything unusual in the part of the building to which he had been admitted, Martin Kerr came and went on his occasional visit, thinking very little of lunatics, and had now almost forgotten that somewhere in the house there were such people. On this Saturday, however, the veil was to be removed. The Doctor greeted the lads kindly, talked for a few minutes pleasantly about what then lay next their hearts, the rook-shooting in the park, and then said,' By the way, Edward, your aunt has got something to show you. You will find her in her room, and I will keep Kerr company till you return.' After his nephew had gone, the Doctor said, ' I am glad you like coming up here.' ' Yes, I am very glad indeed to come.
