Assembly of the Vasculature and Its Regulation (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Robert J. Tomanek Assembly of the Vasculature and Its Regulation (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Robert J. Tomanek
R3,204 Discovery Miles 32 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The overall scope of this new series will be to evolve an understanding of the genetic basis of (1) how early mesoderm commits to cells of a heart lineage that progressively and irreversibly assemble into a segmented, primary heart tube that can be remodeled into a four-chambered organ, and (2) how blood vessels are derived and assembled both in the heart and in the body. Our central aim is to establish a four-dimensional, spatiotemporal foundation for the heart and blood vessels that can be genetically dissected for function and mechanism. Since Robert DeHaan's seminal chapter "Morphogenesis of the Vertebrate Heart" published in Organogenesis (Holt Rinehart & Winston, NY) in 1965, there have been surprisingly few books devoted to the subject of cardiovascular mor phogenesis, despite the enormous growth of interest that occurred nationally and internationally. Most writings on the subject have been scholarly compilations of the proceedings of major national or international symposia or multiauthored volumes, often without a specific theme. What is missing are the unifying concepts that can make sense out of a burgeoning database of facts. The Editorial Board of this new series believes the time has come for a book series dedicated to cardio vascular morphogenesis that will serve not only as an important archival and didac tic reference source for those who have recently come into the field but also as a guide to the evolution of afield that is clearly coming of age.

Formation of the Heart and its Regulation (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Robert J. Tomanek, Robert B. Runyan Formation of the Heart and its Regulation (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Robert J. Tomanek, Robert B. Runyan
R3,203 Discovery Miles 32 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Formation of the Heart and its Regulation reviews in considerable detail the major events in heart development and their control via genes, cell-cell interactions, growth factors and other contributing elements. In addition, there is an extensive and useful overview of the field of heart development taken as a whole. The book will appeal to all students and researchers working on cardiovascular development and to pediatric cardiologists.

Coronary Vasculature - Development, Structure-Function, and Adaptations (Paperback, 2013 ed.): Robert J. Tomanek Coronary Vasculature - Development, Structure-Function, and Adaptations (Paperback, 2013 ed.)

Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the developed world. The high metabolism and oxygen demand of the cardiac myocardium depends on both a high blood flow and a rich capillary density. For this reason, the growth of the coronary vasculature is vital, not only in early development, but also in the adult faced with various stresses. Novel technologies have enabled the discovery of the molecular mechanisms underlying the growth and assembly coronary vessels, and this volume covers the hierarchy of the coronary vasculature from its embryonic origins through its postnatal growth, adulthood, and senescence. Chapters address normal coronary development, coronary anomalies and their possible underlying developmental errors, coronary vessel adaptations to exercise training, aging, hypoxia, myocardial ischemia, and cardiac hypertrophy. This comprehensive overview of current research in coronary vessels and myocardial perfusion was written by Dr. Robert J. Tomanek, Emeritus Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the University of Iowa. The book reviews, discusses, and integrates findings from various areas of coronary vasculature research, and as a result, will be a valuable reference source for cardiovascular scientists and physicians for many years to come.
