In Praise of Quest QUEST is the history of the California Youth Authority and the
career of the author from 1941 -1976, from trainee to deputy
director. The story he shares is about the strong and interesting
people he met along the way, individuals, and leaders, who took an
abstract idea about administering a program for troubled youth and
its subsequent development into a premier youth correctional agency
recognized and admired nationally and internationally. Having
worked with him during the "Golden Years," I can assure the reader
that his unique writing style lets you share the Quest in triumph
and failure. It is an important book for anyone interested in
improving the administration of criminal and juvenile justice.
Ronald W. Hayes, Deputy Director (ret), California Youth
Authority QUEST is graphic review by an insider of the "rise and fall" of
the California Youth Authority. From its beginning, the Youth
Authority was recognized, nationally and internationally, for the
extensive innovative, progressive programs for youthful offenders.
Smith's recollections of this period offer valuable personal
insights into its growth and equally valuable observations as to
why the agency would later experience a downward spiral to
extinction. It is well written and documented, and a major
contribution to corrections, criminology, and an informed public.

For the Latino population, the family bond is powerful and enduring. Family serves as the primary source of support, care, guidance, and healing; all difficulties that arise for an individual are surmounted together. Therefore, a practitioner working with a Latino client must gain the trust and respect of the family in order to carry out treatment efficiently. He or she must essentially become a part of that family to encourage members to share their issues without the concern of breaching the confidence of the family. Counseling and Family Therapy with Latino Populations helps the therapist to join the Latino family in order to identify and explore the difficulties that threaten their welfare. With this fundamental principle as the basis, the book's editors and contributors write chapters that focus on work with children and adolescents, group counseling and substance abuse counseling. They incorporate specific case studies, methods, and strategies for intervention and provide insight into the cultural relevance behind each example. This book is a necessary resource for therapists working with Latino clients who wish to offer effective techniques while continuing to value the integrity of family tradition.
A provocative look at the remarkable contributions of high-skill immigrant entrepreneurs in America Both a revelation and a call-to-action, "Immigrant, Inc." explores the uncommon skill and drive of America's new immigrants and their knack for innovation and entrepreneurship. From the techies who created icons of the new economy-Intel, Google, eBay and Sun Microsystems-to the young engineers tinkering with solar power and next-generation car batteries, immigrants have proven themselves to be America's competitive advantage. With a focus on legal immigrants and their odyssey from homeland
to start-up, this unique book Whether you are a CEO, a civic leader, or an entrepreneur yourself, "Immigrant, Inc." warns of the peril of anti-immigrant attitudes and a hostile immigration process. It also explains how any American can tap their "inner immigrant" to transform their lives and their companies. Written by an immigration lawyer who represents immigrant entrepreneurs and a journalist who specializes in international culture, the authors have a front-row seat to this phenomenon, offering a fascinating glimpse into the mindset of the most persistent entrepreneurs of the era.

In this paper differences and anomalies in west coast seasonal flow structures have been highlighted. In particular, it was emphasized that flow off Washington has significant differences from that of Oregon; namely, during summer, flow at mid-shelf is more poleward off Washington, and during winter, flow on the inner-shelf is more equatorward off Washington than off Oregon. The former result may be related to the poleward decrease in the longshelf wind stress; the latter result may be related to the presence of the Columbia River plume. Off southern California the near-surface flow over the shelf is more persistently equatorward than that off Washington . Conversely, the flow over the slope in the upper 100 m of the water column is more persistently poleward than that off washington. Also, the undercurrent structure, that is, a subsurface maximum, is maintained at least from summer to early winter off southern California (no data are yet available from spring), but only during summer and early fall off washington. We note that the seasonal cycle of vertical shear in the two locations is similar, although a reversal in sign sometimes occurs off Washington. The book's opening vignette tells the story of Chris, a seventy-four year old Dutchman, mentor and friend to a co-worker named Peter. They spend a summer together diggging graves at a local cemetery known as "Sunny Acres," where Chris encourages Peter to "Hear the birds sing," and "Never Waste the Flowers." This spirit of practical gentleness sets the tone for the twenty-four vignettes that follow and cover childhood memories, fantasies, and simple life stories. There is something for everyone in this diverse collection about people and life's simple gifts involving love, learning, friendship, and trust that encourage introspection, particularly your own.
