Robert L. Allen
R1,226 Discovery Miles 12 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters created a sea of change in labour and race relations in the US. For the first time in US history, a black labour union played a central role in shaping labor and civil rights policy. Based on interviews and archival research, this new book tells the story of the union and its charismatic leader C.L. Dellums, starting from the BSCP's origins as the first national union of black workers in 1925. In 1937, the BSCP made history when it compelled one of the largest US corporations - the Pullman Company - to recognize and negotiate a contract with a black workers' union. C. L. Dellums was a leading civil rights activist as well as a labor leader. In 1948, he was chosen to be the first West Coast Regional Director of the NAACP. This book is an inspiring testament to both him and the unions transformative impact on US society.

Reluctant Reformers - Racism and Social Reform Movements in the United States (Paperback): Robert L. Allen, Chude Pamela Allen Reluctant Reformers - Racism and Social Reform Movements in the United States (Paperback)
Robert L. Allen, Chude Pamela Allen; Foreword by Jamelle Bouie
R496 Discovery Miles 4 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Reluctant Reformers explores the centrality of racism to American politics through the origins, internal dynamics, and leadership of the major democratic and social justice movements between the early nineteenth century and the end of World War II. It focuses in particular on the abolitionists, the Populist Party, the Progressive reformers, and the women's suffrage, labor, and socialist and communist movements. Despite their achievements, virtually all these predominantly white movements failed to oppose, capitulated to, or even advocated racism at critical junctures in their history, with their efforts undercut by their inability to build and sustain a mass movement of both Black and white Americans. Reluctant Reformers examines both the structural roots of racism in US radical movements and the impact of racist ideologies on the white-dominated core of each movement, how some whites resisted these pressures, and how Black people engaged with these movements. This edition includes a postscript describing the Black freedom movement of the 1960s and the central role it has played in the development of today's radical social justice movements.

The Port Chicago Mutiny - The Story of the Largest Mass Mutiny Trial in U.S. Naval History (Paperback): Robert L. Allen The Port Chicago Mutiny - The Story of the Largest Mass Mutiny Trial in U.S. Naval History (Paperback)

Cultural Writing. History. During World War II, Port Chicago was a segregated naval munitions base on the outer shores of San Francisco Bay. Black seamen were required to load ammunition onto ships bound for the South Pacific under the watch of their white officers-an incredibly dangerous and physically challenging task. On July 17, 1944, an explosion rocked the base, killing 320 men-202 of whom were black ammunition loaders. In the ensuing weeks, white officers were given leave time and commended for heroic efforts, whereas 328 of the surviving black enlistees were sent to load ammunition on another ship. When they refused, fifty men were singled out and charged-and convicted-of mutiny. It was the largest mutiny trial in U.S. naval history. First published in 1989, THE PORT CHICAGO MUTINY is a thorough and riveting work of civil rights literature, and with a new preface and epilogue by the author emphasize the event's relevance today. More than a mutiny trial, the incident raises questions about the powers of the military, about the prosecution of civil disobedience, and about the rights of the individual.

Allene Carter's father-in-law was a decorated veteran. Yet it was not until the Carter family received a call from the White House that she discovered he was a heroic force in the Rhineland campaign. President Clinton awarded the Medal of Honor to several black soldiers who served in World War II. Sergeant Edward A. Carter Jr. was among the recipients. Shocked to learn the extent of Carter's service, Allene was determined to uncover both the truth about her father-in-law's wartime record and why his official recognition was so long in coming.

Here is the story not only of Sergeant Carter but also of his family's fight to restore his honor. Theirs is a journey that takes them from local veterans organizations to the office of the president and front pages of the national media. An important piece of American history, "Honoring Sergeant Carter" is an enduring story of determination and family love.
