Today many of the old pulp crime writers have achieved success to
one degree or other. Sadly, like so many artists, they had to die
before anyone took their work seriously. Featuring stories by Frank
Johnson, John P. Rees, Carlota M. Hardy, Frederick C. Davis, David
Goodis, C.S. Montanye, Norman A. Daniels, David Manners, Edward
Ronns, William O'Sullivan, Jerome Severs Perry, Neil Moran, Robert
Leslie Bellem, Mat Rand, Michael Bittner, Robert Turner, Joe
Archibald, David James, Henry Herbert Knibbs, Benton Braden, and
Cyril Plunkett.
This volume collects seven Bellem tales from pulp magazines such as
"Spicy Mystery Stories," "Fifth Column Stories," and "The Ghost --
Super-Detective." Included are: "The Man Who Was Not," "Enough
Glory," "The Cock Crows 'Murder'," "Knife in the Dark," "Kill That
Headline," "War Plans Divided," and "Murder's Messenger."
Introduction by Darrell Schweitzer.
The pulp, Super-Detective, with its adventure hero, Jim Anthony,
started out as a competitor to Doc Savage. After 10 issues, the
publisher turned Anthony into a hardboiled detective. This Flip
Book, with a book on each side, explores both worlds. The front
side is "Legion of Robots," a Doc Savage style novel from the issue
of November 1940, written by Victor Rousseau. The flipside has
"Murder's Migrants," a hardboiled story from March 1943, by the
team of Robert Leslie Bellem and W.T. Ballard. Introductions that
describe the behind-the-scenes story of Super-Detective are
provided by, respectively, John McMahan and John Wooley.
The famous "Spicy" pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s are among
the rarest and most sought-after publications by collectors. The
"Spicy" magazines -- which included Spicy Mystery, Spicy Adventure,
Spicy Detective, and others -- published a titilating mix of
fantasy, horror, mystery, action-adventure, and suspense,
punctuated by episodes of torture, sadism, sex, and other risque
elements. Although tame by current standards, and sometimes of
dubious literary merit, these publications presented tales which
thrilled a sensation-hungry audience. Despite the themes and
constraints of the market, writers who would later become famous --
including Hugh B. Cave, E. Hoffman Price, Robert Leslie Bellem, and
many more -- were frequent contributors. The December 1939 issue of
Spicy Adventure Stories includes contributions from Robert Leslie
Bellem, Lew Merrill (Victor Rousseau), Hugh Speer, Ken Cooper,
Clayton Maxwell, Clark Nelson, and Harley L. Court.
Written and created by Robert Leslie Bellem, the hardnosed, feisty,
Hollywood Detective, Dan Turner, is featured in eight stories and
one comic presentation in this compilation. Read Temporary Corpse,
Death's Bright Halo, Beyond Justice, Dark Star of Death, Blackmail
from Beyond, Crimson Quest, Cat Act, and Latin Blood, as well as
the comic, The Murdered Mummy. All stories are from Spicy Detective
and Private Detective and are fully illustrated with the original
artwork which accompanied their publication in the pulps.
