Verdigris: Michele Mari Verdigris
Michele Mari; Translated by Brian Robert Moore
R372 Discovery Miles 3 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At the tail end of the 1960s, the thirteen-year-old Michelino spends his summers at his grandparents' modest estate in Nasca, near Lake Maggiore, losing himself in the tales of horror, adventure, and mystery shelved in his grandfather's library. The greatest mystery he's ever encountered, however, doesn't come from a book - it's the groundskeeper, Felice, a sometimes frightening, sometimes gentle, always colourful man of uncertain age who speaks an enchanting dialect and whose memory gets worse with each passing day. When Michelino volunteers to help the old man by providing him with clever mnemonic devices to keep his memory alive, the boy soon finds himself obsessed with piecing together the eerie hodgepodge of Felice's biography . . . a quest that leads to the uncovering of skeletons in Nazi uniforms in the attic, to Felice's admission that he can hear the voices of the dead, and to a new perspective on Felice's endless war against the insatiable local slugs, who are by no means merely a horticultural threat. And yet nothing could be more fascinating to Michelino than Felice's own secret origins. Where did he come from? Is he the victim or the villain of his story? Is he a noble hero, a holy fool, or perhaps the very thing that Michelino most wants and fears: a real-life monster.

You, Bleeding Childhood (Paperback): Michele Mari You, Bleeding Childhood (Paperback)
Michele Mari; Translated by Brian Robert Moore
R304 Discovery Miles 3 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Italy's great chronicler of the macabre and hilarious terrors of growing up geeky arrives in English at last. Long before the latest vogue for autofiction, Michele Mari, one of Italy's most beloved authors, cast his mind back to the days of his own childhood, and found it crawling with monsters. Raised on comic books and science fiction, the young Mari constructed an alternate universe for himself untouched by uncomprehending grownups or sadistic peers. Compared to the horrors of real life, Long John Silver and Cthulhu made for positively cuddly company; but little boys raised by beasts may well grow up beastly-or never grow up at all. Waking or sleeping, the obsessions of Mari's youth seem to color his every adult thought. You, Bleeding Childhood stands as his first attempt to catalog this cabinet of wonders. Cult classics since their first publication, these loosely connected stories stand as the ideal introduction to an encyclopedic fantasist on a par with Kafka, Poe, and Borges.

Holy Scribbling - Looking at Life Through a Sacred Window (Hardcover): Katherine Roberts Moore Holy Scribbling - Looking at Life Through a Sacred Window (Hardcover)
Katherine Roberts Moore
R768 Discovery Miles 7 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For some writers, scribbling is minimal-on the periphery of their work. In Holy Scribbling, the scribbles take center stage and become the means to the message. With sometimes quirky insight, Katherine Moore takes us to sacred windows that allow the spirituality of ordinary scenes to emerge. From the stark beauty of a "Mystic Dawn" to the serenity of "Simple Solitude," we experience the mysteries of nature, along with the routine demands of relationships and circumstances. Holy Scribbling is a personal book, but the images in these works expand into a universal understanding of everyman. In poetic form, a sense of reality is captured with a minimum of words. Paradoxically, it is her appreciation of words that enhances a deep spiritual sense of solitude and silence. As a contemplative commentary on glimpses of life, Holy Scribbling offers you the chance to see not only yourself, but also, possibly, God. "Take the journey with Katherine Moore through this meditative volume of verse, and you will experience more deeply that you are alive " -Jonathan Kelley, D.Min., LPC, director of the Presbyterian Counseling Center, Brunswick County, North Carolina "Katherine Moore's collection of poems is visceral and haunting, yet joyful. She reaches into her soul and shows us the frustrations and agonies of daily life, yet through it all she keeps a sense of wonder and delight. ... Her poems will make you both laugh and cry." -Elsa Bonstein, columnist and poet

The Social Impact of Oil - The Case of Peterhead: Robert Moore The Social Impact of Oil - The Case of Peterhead
Robert Moore
R2,839 Discovery Miles 28 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Social Impact of Oil (1982) examines how the town of Peterhead in the UK, hitherto a remote fishing port, was changed by North Sea oil. It looks at the wheeling and dealing that went on between property speculators, multinational companies, local government and municipal bodies, as well as discussing the clash of city money and small town as well as the practical problems of the labour market, housing and planning. It analyses the way the town changed, the advantages oil brought, often unintentionally, as well as the many challenges.

Search and Seizure of Digital Evidence (Hardcover, New): Robert Moore Search and Seizure of Digital Evidence (Hardcover, New)
Robert Moore
R1,461 Discovery Miles 14 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Moore explains the difficulties in applying traditional Fourth Amendment jurisprudence to digital evidence. He examines issues related to drafting search warrants, as well as several of the more common warrantless search doctrines, in order to determine what aspects of traditional search and seizure doctrine apply to crimes involving technology. To amplify his points, he discusses several high technology crimes. Additionally, he studies the nature of digital evidence in order to show how its volatile nature requires a greater understanding of when evidence may or may not be legally seized and searched.

R1,537 Discovery Miles 15 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This collection features three peer-reviewed literature reviews on pre- and probiotics in poultry production. The first chapter summarises the safety and efficacy of individual monocultures for prophylactic and/or therapeutic efficacy against Salmonella infections in poultry under both laboratory and field conditions. The chapter also considers the development of novel, cost-effective, feed-stable, direct-fed microbials with potential for widespread utilisation and improved production, delivery and clinical efficacy for animal use. The second chapter discusses the establishment of prebiotics as a series of feed compounds that serve as specific substrates for gastrointestinal tract (GIT) bacteria. The chapter reviews the impact of prebiotics on bird health, GIT function, and prevention of foodborne pathogen GIT colonization. Particular attention is drawn on the impact of prebiotics on the avian intestinal microbiome, cecal microbiome and the avian upper GIT. The final chapter considers current concerns surrounding the application of probiotics in poultry production, primarily due to mixed experiences of their effectiveness and lack of knowledge regarding the scientific basis for their modes of action. In contrast, prebiotics have been readily accepted by the sector. This chapter summarises recent research on the effects of both types of treatment, their possible modes of action, as well as the strengths and limitations of their use.

A Silence Shared (Paperback): Lalla Romano A Silence Shared (Paperback)
Lalla Romano; Translated by Brian Robert Moore
R275 Discovery Miles 2 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Forced back to her remote hometown by the war, Giulia is immediately drawn to a couple in a similar situation: graceful, spontaneous Ada and her husband Paolo, a sickly teacher and partisan in hiding. Joined from Turin by Giulia's husband Stefano, the two couples form an intense bond; as the Germans begin to occupy Italy, a subtle dance of attractions begins, intensified by their shared isolation and the muffled hum of threat over a long, hard winter. In prose of subtle, enigmatic atmospheres and acutely precise images, Lalla Romano evokes both the tension and the stillness of life in occupied Italy. Translated into English for the first time, A Silence Shared is a captivating classic novel that inhabits the silent spaces between historic events, depicting the mysterious luminosity of human relationships in extraordinary circumstances.

Positive Action in Action - Equal Opportunities and Declining Opportunities on Merseyside (Paperback): Robert Moore Positive Action in Action - Equal Opportunities and Declining Opportunities on Merseyside (Paperback)
Robert Moore
R978 Discovery Miles 9 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1997, this volume describes very clearly the various government policies to promote equal opportunity and the context of urban policy in which they have to be implemented. Robert Moore's important study addresses the key issue of equal opportunities through a case study of events when a change in government policy appeared to hold out the prospect of new jobs for a highly deprived inner city area. It is a model for all social research of this kind. The result is a very detailed and objective analysis of the problem of implementing equal opportunity policies in practice.

Robert. Moore-Jumonville
R1,851 Discovery Miles 18 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Historians have tended to create a dualistic paradigm, which excludes a mediating biblical criticism in America. For polemical reasons, it has been easier for both conservatives and liberals to polarize moderates as the opposition or to ignore them altogether. Rather than the common modernist/fundamentalist paradigm, which is dualistic, a more accurate way to interpret the biblical criticism of late nineteenth century America is to construe a theological spectrum extending from right to left. The Hermeneutics of Historical Distance tells the story of late nineteenth century moderate American biblical criticism. Robert Moore-Jumonville's study serves as a lens for examining the broader context and complexities of American biblical studies during the period and the result is a more subtly nuanced view of American biblical criticism.

Improving health in populations in which health is poor is a complex process. This book argues that the traditional government approach of exhorting individuals to live healthier lifestyles is not enough - action to promote public health needs to take place not just through public agencies, but also by engaging community assets and resources in their broadest sense. The book reports lessons from the experience of planning, establishing and delivering such action by the five-year Sustainable Health Action Research Programme (SHARP) in Wales. It critically examines the experience of SHARP in relation to current literature on policy; community health and health inequalities; and action research. The authors make clear how this regional development has produced opportunities for developing general concepts and theory about community-based policy developments that are relevant across national boundaries and show that complex and sustained community action, and effective local partnership, are fundamental components of the mix of factors required to address health inequalities successfully. The book concludes by indicating the connections between SHARP and earlier traditions of community-based action, and by arguing that we need to be bolder in our approaches to community-based health improvement and more flexible in our understanding of the ways in which knowledge and inform developments in health policy. The book will be of interest to practitioners and activists working in community-based projects; students in community development, health studies and medical sociology; professionals working in health promotion, community nursing and allied areas; and policy makers working at local, regional and national levels.
