Die Europaische Gemeinschaft fur Kohle und Stahl (EGKS), die im Jahre 1951 gegrundet wurde und zunachst aus sechs Staaten bestand, entwickelte sich mit insgesamt 27 Staaten zur heutigen Europaischen Union. Nachdem der Eiserne Vorhang im Jahre 1989 gefallen war, fingen auch die osteuropaischen Staaten an, sich von ihrer sozialistischen Planwirtschaft ab und den westlichen Marktstrukturen zuzuwenden. Somit folgte 2004 die Osterweiterung der EU. Seitdem die Folgen der Balkankriege uberwunden sind, melden auch die sudosteuropaischen Staaten Mazedonien, Montenegro, Kroatien und die Turkei Interesse an einer Mitgliedschaft. Ebenso wie die vorangegangen osteuropaischen Staaten erhoffen sie sich mehr Wohlstand, Arbeit und Freiheit in der europaischen Gemeinschaft. Zugleich wurde ihnen der Beweis geliefert, dass die Reformen, die der Erfullung der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Kriterien zum EU-Beitritt dienen, realisierbar sind. Ihre Beitrittsantrage haben die vier genannten Lander bereits eingereicht. Kroatien steht seit 2005 in Verhandlungen mit der EU, Mazedonien und Montenegro sind seit 2005 bzw. 2010 offizielle Kandidaten. Ihre Beitrittsverhandlungen wurden allerdings noch nicht eroffnet. Eine Ausnahme bildet die Turkei. Sie ist bereits ein langjahriger Partner der Europaischen Union. 1987 erfolgte der Antrag auf Mitgliedschaft in der Europaischen Wirtschaftsgemeinschaft. Seit 1999 ist die Turkei offizieller Kandidat fur die Mitgliedschaft in der EU. Die Beitrittsverhandlungen dauern an, da die Bereitschaft hinsichtlich der Erfullung und Umsetzung von Vorgaben fehlt. Ein Ende ist nicht in Sicht. Ein weiterer potentieller Anwarter auf eine Mitgliedschaft ist Island, ein seit Jahrzehnten eigenstandiger und wirtschaftlich sehr gut positionierter Staat im Norden Europas.
