The Rabinal Achi, one of the most remarkable works of Mayan literature, dates back to the 1400s. In 2005, UNESCO declared Rabinal Achi to be a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This drama is still performed with a ritual dance in the village of Rabinal (Baja Verapaz). The drama is set in the Guatemalan highlands in the second half of the fifteenth century. In an exemplary trial that takes place in Kajyub, the capital of the Rabinaleb at that time, a captured enemy warrior (Quiche Achi) appears before the royal court. A series of combative dialogues pits the offending warrior against the local warrior (Rabinal Achi) and the king (Job Toj), reconstructing the deeds of those involved and retracing the antagonistic history of these two Mayan groups, the Quiche and the Rabinaleb. Alain Breton approaches the text from an anthropological and ethnographical perspective, demonstrating that this indigenous text reenacts pre-Columbian historic paradigms. Breton's work is based on the Perez Manuscript (1913), a facsimile of which is included in its entirety. Breton translated into French an entirely new transcription of the original text, and Teresa Lavender Fagan and Robert Schneider translated the text into English. Both the transcription and the translation are accompanied by detailed commentary and a glossary.

In the early 1950s, the pioneering work of Robert Danis on operative treatment of fractures was in danger of falling into oblivion. Maurice E. Muller, impressed and intrigued by his contacts with Danis, first critically applied internal fixation and immediate mobilization to some 80 patients and found the basic concept confirmed, but in need of further develop- ment with regard to technology, clinical application, and scientific analysis. In 1958 he assembled a group of friends, general and orthopedic surgeons, willing to invest time and effort in helping to create the necessary armamentarium and to form a study group for clinical trials. The first report on operative treatment of fractures by Muller, Allgower, and Willeneg- ger, published in 1963, stressed the advantages of early open reduction and internal fixa- tion. At the suggestion of worried American and English partp. ers, a picture series showing the healing pattern of 188 tibial fractures operated on in Chur between December 20, 1961 and April26, 1962 was left out.

Zuerst soll eine kurze Darstellung der Ereignisse vor 778 erfolgen. Dabei wird der Anlass der Muslime zum Hilfegesuch an Karl den Grossen verdeutlicht und im Folgenden werden die Probleme Karls mit seinen Nachbarvolkern erklart, um daraus ein erstes Motiv fur seine Abenteuerreise zu finden. Im Weiteren wird der Kriegszug skizziert und die Probleme, die es dabei gab. Daraus lasst sich dann der rasche Abzug von Karl dem Grossen erklaren. Ein letzter Teil wird die Probleme der Geschichtsschreibung analysieren, denn das Motiv fur diese Reise wurde in spateren Quellen immer wieder umgeschrieben und verandert, sodass der Frankenkonig in einem besseren Bild dargestellt wurde. Dieser Mythos des heldenhaften Karls, welcher nur nach Spanien zog, um die Christen zu schutzen, soll am Ende dieser Arbeit versucht werden zu entkraft

Diese Mythenbildung zeigt schon deutlich, dass die vorhandenen Akteure weit uber dem normalen Burger stehen und auch weitreichendere Fahigkeiten haben. Auch in den modernen Western sind die Cowboys sehr eigenwillig dargestellt. Mythen sind aber mehr als nur bunt ausgeschmuckte Erzahlungen, bei denen man den Wahrheitsgehalt bezweifeln kann. Mythen, Legenden und Sagen wurden schon in der Geschichte und werden noch in der Gegenwart genutzt, sei es, um die eigenen Truppen in der Schlacht moralisch mit den Mythen zu unterstutzen oder zum Beispiel, um der Gesellschaft einen romantischen Eindruck des Wilden Westen" zu vermitteln. Gerade die Filmindustrie profitiert noch heute von der Mythenbildung des wilden" amerikanischen Westens.
