Taxes on the highly skilled are an important cost factor for companies competing internationally for talent. This book provides an international comparison of the effective level of taxes and social security charges imposed on highly qualified employees. Based on a newly developed inter-temporal simulation model, the attractiveness of 7 EU member states, 12 Swiss cantons, and the United States is assessed. Several compensation packages including old-age provision, fringe benefits, and long-term incentives as well as various income levels and family situations are considered in the analysis. The book also contains a comprehensive survey of social security and tax systems in the countries studied.

This book is the resuh of a research project commissioned by the "IBC BAK In- ternational Benchmark Club"(R), an initiative by BAK Basel Economics, and car- ried out by Zentrum fiir Europaische Wirtschaftsforschung (ZEW - Centre for European Economic Research), Mannheim. It contributes to the IBC's effort to evaluate and compare economic performance and location factors across European regions. Das Arbeitsbuch enthalt UEbungsaufgaben aus den Gebieten Steuern, externe Effekte, oeffentliche Guter, naturliches Monopol, Foederalismus und Staatsverschuldung. Durch die anwendungsorientierte Auswahl seiner Themen unterscheidet es sich von den Arbeitsbuchern zur Mikro- und Makrooekonomik. Die Fragestellungen werden jedoch wie in der Mikrooekonomik anhand prazise formulierter Modelle analysiert. Die Aufgaben wurden groesstenteils in UEbungen des Grund- und Hauptstudiums getestet. Auf den hier gemachten Erfahrungen aufbauend, wird zu jeder Aufgabe eine ausfuhrliche Loesung prasentiert. Der Leser erhalt so das Handwerkszeug, zugleich die Fahigkeit zu finanzwissenschaftlicher Argumentation und die Anwendung wirtschaftstheoretischer Methoden zu uben.

Dieses Buch ist ein Beitrag zur reinen Theorie des Geldes. Die Verwendung von Zahlungsmitteln wird hier ausschliesslich durch fehlende doppelte UEbereinstimmung der Tauschwunsche erklart, ohne Ruckgriff auf Transaktionskosten. Im Hauptteil wird ein Modell prasentiert, das die Nachfragestruktur von Samuelsons Modell uberlappender Generationen mit einem nichtkooperativen Ansatz bilateraler Verhandlungen und zufalliger Partnerzuordnung verbindet. Es wird ein Gleichgewicht konstruiert, in dem die Individuen von sich aus Zahlungsmittel in Umlauf bringen und fur alle Transaktionen verwenden. In zwei weiteren, interpretierenden Kapiteln wird die Bedeutung von Geld in Walras-Gleichgewichten untersucht. Zum einen werden stationare Gleichgewichte in OEkonomien uberlappender Generationen danach klassifiziert, ob der in ihnen abgebildete Tausch die Verwendung eines Zahlungsmittels verlangt. Zum anderen wird begrundet, warum auch in endlichen Tauschoekonomien ein Zahlungsmittel mitgedacht werden muss, obwohl es nicht explizit modelliert ist.
