The Hoard and its History - Staffordshire's Secrets Revealed (Paperback): Robert Sharp The Hoard and its History - Staffordshire's Secrets Revealed (Paperback)
Robert Sharp
R526 Discovery Miles 5 260 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

No satisfactory explanation has been given for the burial of a large Saxon gold hoard found in Hammerwich, Staffordshire in 2009. Speculation on who buried the treasure has led to many ideas based on battles, warriors and plundering kings. An alternative vision is given with greater emphasis placed on the religious items, the early church at Lichfield and the amassing of artwork in religious houses from the seventh century onwards. The Christian pieces are explained in new ways and the gold is discussed from the point of view of a Churl, Monk, Bishop, Warrior and King. An argument is presented based on available evidence to suggest why the hoard was buried and who possibly might have buried the precious items in despair. Archaeology, local history, Saxon beliefs and historical events are brought together to give a new way of seeing the Staffordshire Hoard.

Ethics Online: How the Internet and Other Technology Shifts are Changing Morality helps students understand the basics of ethics as they are lived in today's world. The text introduces readers to traditional approaches to morality, narrows key theories into specific principles, and then uses those principles to examine many of the difficult moral questions we face in our contemporary, technology-driven society. The opening chapter introduces the basics of ethics, key terminology, and the mindset that will help students think critically and carefully consider moral issues. Additional chapters cover fundamental moral theory, justice and rights, the concept of autonomy, the principles of beneficence and non-maleficence, and the importance of cultivating particular virtues in a technologically centered world, where we often interact with anonymous strangers. Closing chapters look at specific ethical issues that have been created by the growth of internet technology and the prevalence of social media. Online harassment, free speech, online justice, trust and authority online, group polarization, internet communities, and our changing notions of propriety and corporate responsibility are covered. Designed to help students develop informed decisions about the moral issues that face our society, Ethics Online is ideal for courses in moral theory, ethics, and philosophy, especially those with a focus on practical application.

Greystone's Secret - Suspenseful Tale of Efforts to Address Soundness of Thoroughbred Race Horses (Paperback): Robert Sharp Greystone's Secret - Suspenseful Tale of Efforts to Address Soundness of Thoroughbred Race Horses (Paperback)
Robert Sharp
R333 Discovery Miles 3 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nathan Hunter does not believe in coincidences-a broken stirrup leather, untied mooring line, Meg Callahan's incredulous fall in a top equestrian event, horses testing positive for illegal substances, and the suspicious barn fire which claimed the life of Meg's grandfather. Then things get worse, confirming his beliefs. Sited on the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay and the outlet of the Susquehanna River, the historic town of Havre de Grace, Maryland was once home to a nationally acclaimed racetrack nicknamed "The Graw." Little did Nathan Hunter know when he first visited the Callahan dairy farm nearby, that what lay buried at the old track would be the key to unraveling a series of sinister events that had already claimed the life of one Callahan and several of their Thoroughbreds. Nathan Hunter's dreams of one day improving the breed of the Thoroughbred horse for soundness are encouraged by Andrew Callahan-a strong, charismatic, dairy farmer who provides Nathan with the father figure he never knew. With Liz, a sharp shooting southern belle as his wife, Nathan is able to overcome his infatuation for Callahan's gifted equestrian daughter, Meg, and-with the help of Callahan resources-pursue his goal. Unfortunately, because of his relationship with the Callahans, someone seems bent on seeing that Nathan's dreams never become reality. When a fire meant to kill Andrew and his son, Eric, destroys the Callahan horse barn and leads to the discovery of a secret hideout for slaves, valuable documents of grandfather Callahan are found which point to ominous acts by a top racing and breeding farm to ruin competition at all costs-including murder. In their efforts to prove the merit of the elder Callahan's breeding program, Nathan, Eric, Meg and Liz become the targets of the same forces suspected of murdering Eric's grandfather; disaster threatens them from Ireland, through Havre de Grace, and right into Professor Nathan Hunter's classroom in Lexington, Kentucky. Although the story is fictional, it is unique in that the author introduces factual data and some basic research to allow the reader to think critically about current practices in racing and breeding Thoroughbreds which may be contributing to breakdowns. Attention is given to Artificial Insemination-not now recognized by The Jockey Club-as a means to assist breed improvement.

Good Judgment - Making Judicial Decisions (Paperback): Robert Sharpe Good Judgment - Making Judicial Decisions (Paperback)
Robert Sharpe
R1,513 Discovery Miles 15 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Good Judgment, based upon the author's experience as a lawyer, law professor, and judge, explores the role of the judge and the art of judging. Engaging with the American, English, and Commonwealth literature on the role of the judge in the common law tradition, Good Judgment addresses the following questions: What exactly do judges do? What is properly within their role and what falls outside? How do judges approach their decision-making task? In an attempt to explain and reconcile two fundamental features of judging, namely judicial choice and judicial discipline, this book explores the nature and extent of judicial choice in the common law legal tradition and the structural features of that tradition that control and constrain that element of choice. As Sharpe explains, the law does not always provide clear answers, and judges are often left with difficult choices to make, but the power of judicial choice is disciplined and constrained and judges are not free to decide cases according to their own personal sense of justice. Although Good Judgment is accessibly written to appeal to the non-specialist reader with an interest in the judicial process, it also tackles fundamental issues about the nature of law and the role of the judge and will be of particular interest to lawyers, judges, law students, and legal academics.
