Originally published during the early part of the twentieth
century, the Cambridge Manuals of Science and Literature were
designed to provide concise introductions to a broad range of
topics. They were written by experts for the general reader and
combined a comprehensive approach to knowledge with an emphasis on
accessibility. New Zealand by Robert Stout and J. Logan Stout was
first published in 1911. The book contains information on New
Zealand's social and political character, together with an account
of its historical development.
Edward Jerningham Wakefield (1820 1876) was the son of Edward
Gibbon Wakefield (1796 1862), who was the driving force behind the
early colonization of New Zealand and South Australia, founding the
New Zealand Association in 1837 with the aim of creating a colony
in that country. His son was appointed secretary of the first
settler expedition to New Zealand in 1839, and remained in the
colony until 1844. This volume, edited by Sir Robert Stout and
first published in 1908, contains Wakefield's account of his stay
in New Zealand. He describes in detail the social conditions during
the founding of the colony and its explorations in New Zealand, and
includes detailed first-hand ethnographic information concerning
the Maori tribes the expedition encountered. This volume provides a
valuable and fascinating insight into the society and development
of one of the earliest colonies of New Zealand.

Present educational finance policies can be construed to be in
violation of the equal Protection Clause of the United states
Constitution's Fourteenth Amendment. Assisted by the National Urban
Coalition, the authors of this book have compiled a great deal of
information and analysis on school services in the state of
Michigan--information which may typify such services throughout the
country. Their research was conducted initially to serve as
evidence in a suit filed by the Detroit Board of Education which
alleged dscrimination in the state's distribution of resources to
schools: "It may be that the courts will be persuaded to act on the
matter, or it may be that the logic of the interpretation will
nevertheless be effective in convincing state legislatures
themselves of the need to act. In any event, it is our position
that the specific arguments made to courts and legislative bodies
should embody research of the type illustrated by this book."
