Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks - Technologies, Analysis and Design (Hardcover): Roberto Verdone, Davide Dardari,... Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks - Technologies, Analysis and Design (Hardcover)
Roberto Verdone, Davide Dardari, Gianluca Mazzini, Andrea Conti
R2,347 Discovery Miles 23 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When choosing the technology options to develop a wireless sensor network (WSN), it is vital that their performance levels can be assessed for the type of application intended. This book describes the different technology options - MAC protocols, routing protocols, localisation and data fusion techniques - and provides the means to numerically measure their performance, whether by simulation, mathematical models or experimental test beds. Case studies, based on the authors' direct experience of implementing wireless sensor networks, describe the design methodology and the type of measurements used, together with samples of the performance measurements attained.
The book will enable you to answer vital questions such as:
* How long will my network remain alive given the amount of sensing required of it?
* For how long should I set the sleeping state of my motes?
* How many sensors should I distribute to meet the expected requirements of the application?
* What type of throughput should I expect as a function of the number of nodes deployed and the radio interface chosen (whether it be Bluetooth or Zigbee)?
* How is the Packet Error Rate of my Zigbee motes affected by the selection of adjacent frequency sub bands in the ISM 2.4GHz band?
* How is the localisation precision dependant on the number of nodes deployed in a corridor?
Communications and signal processing engineers, researchers and graduate students working in wireless sensor networks will find this book an invaluable practical guide to this important technology.
""This book gives a proper balance between theory and application; it is a book for those R&D engineers that want to appreciate both why, how and in which domains Wireless Sensor Networks can be best applied."" - Fabio Bellifemine, Telecom Italia
""This book is a thorough and accessible exposition on wireless sensor networks with a good balance between theory and practice; it is valuable for both students and practicing engineers, and is an essential addition for engineering libraries."" - Professor Moe Win, Associate Professor at the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS), Massachusetts Institute of Technology
*Only book to examine wireless sensor network technologies and assess their performance capabilities against possible applications
*Enables the engineer to choose the technology that will give the best performance for the intended application
*Case studies, based on the authors' direct experience of implementing wireless sensor networks, describe the design methodology and the type of measurements used, together with samples of the performance measurements attained.

R4,477 Discovery Miles 44 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a simple, yet complete, approach to the design and performance analysis of distributed processing algorithms and techniques suitable for IEEE 802.15.4 networks. In particular, the book focuses on the bottom two layers of the ISO/OSI stack (Physical and Medium Access Control), discussing also a few issue related to routing. The book is a the synergistic combination of signal processing aspects on the one hand and MAC and connectivity issues on the other hand. The goal of the book is to clearly link physical layer aspects with medium access and topology aspects, in order to provide the reader with a clear understanding of how to approach the design of proper distributed signal processing and medium access algorithms in this context.

ThisvolumecontainstheproceedingsofEWSN2008,the?fthEuropeanConf- ence on Wireless Sensor Networks, held in Bologna, Italy, during January 30-31 and February 1, 2008. Its scope was the creation of a forum where researchers with di?erent ex- rience and background could discuss cross-layer approaches, novel solutions for speci?c problems and envisage the future development of wireless sensor n- works (WSNs). Out of the 110 papers that were submitted, 23 were selected after a doub- blind peer-review process, leading to an acceptance rate of 21%. Six among the accepted papers included authors from North America, three from Asia, all others from Europe with the exception of one from Australia, and one from Brazil: the conference brought together researchers from almost all corners of the world! Demonstration and poster papers were also presented at the conference, of which separate proceedings were produced, under the supervision of the other TPC Co-chair, Zach Shelby from Sensinode ltd, who managed the reviews of these papers. The rangeoftopicscoveredby this conference, including communicationp- tocols, information processing, middleware, operating systems, hardware and ?eld tests, is very wide. This made the vision of a coherent ?nal technical p- gramme more di?cult, as few papers cover each of the various topics. But what made such a process even more challenging, is the intrinsic nature of WSNs, which is cross-layer and requires the joint consideration of many aspects when measuring or predicting the performance of a given algorithm, protocol, or te- nical solution.

Pervasive Mobile and Ambient Wireless Communications reports the findings of COST 2100, a project of the European intergovernmental COST framework addressing various topics currently emerging in mobile and wireless communications. Drawing on experience developed in this and earlier COST projects, the text represents the final outcome of collaborative work involving more than 500 researchers in 140 institutions and 30 countries (including outside Europe). The book's subject matter includes: transmission techniques; signal processing; radio channel modelling and measurement; radio network issues; and recent paradigms including ultra-wideband, cooperative, vehicle-to-vehicle and body communications. The research reported comes from a variety of backgrounds: academic, equipment-manufacturing and operational and the information contained in this book will bring the study reported to a wider audience from all those spheres of work. Pervasive Mobile and Ambient Wireless Communications will be of interest to researchers for its cutting-edge analysis and to practitioners for its functional usability.
