Sperm Wars turns the conventional thinking about the biology of sex
on its head. Evolutionary biologist Robin Baker argues that human
sexuality follows certain laws, and all of those laws are governed
by one thing: sperm warfare. In the interest of promoting
competition between sperm to fertilize the same egg, evolution has
built men to conquer and monopolize women while women, without ever
knowing they are doing it, seek the best genetic input on offer
from potential sexual partners. In this book, Baker reveals,
through a series of provocative fictional scenes, the far-reaching
implications of sperm competition: ten percent of children are not
fathered by their "fathers;" less than one percent of a man's sperm
is capable of fertilizing anything (the rest is there to fight off
all other men's sperm); "smart" vaginal mucus encourages some sperm
but blocks others; and a woman is far more likely to conceive
through a casual fling than through sex with her regular partner.
From infidelity, to homosexuality, to the female orgasm, Sperm Wars
turns on every light in the bedroom. Two decades after its initial
publication, this classic of popular science will still surprise,
entertain, and even shock.
In this ground-breaking study, Robin Baker investigates the
contribution ancient Mesopotamian theology made to the origins of
Christianity. Drawing on a formidable range of primary sources,
Baker's conclusions challenge the widely held opinion that the
theological imprint of Babylonia and Assyria on the New Testament
is minimal, and what Mesopotamian legacy it contains was mediated
by the Hebrew Bible and ancient Jewish sources. After evaluating
and substantially supplementing previous research on this
mediation, Baker demonstrates significant direct Mesopotamian
influence on the New Testament presentation of Jesus and
particularly the character of his kingship. He also identifies
likely channels of transmission. Baker documents substantial
differences among New Testament authors in borrowing Mesopotamian
conceptions to formulate their Christology. This monograph is an
essential resource for specialists and students of the New
Testament as well as for scholars interested in religious
transmission in the ancient Near East and the afterlife of
Mesopotamian culture.
In Hollow Men, Strange Women, Robin Baker provides a masterly
reappraisal of Israel's experience during its Settlement of Canaan
as narrated in the Book of Judges. Written under Assyrian
suzerainty in the reign of Manasseh, Judges is both a theological
commentary on the Settlement and an esoteric work of prophecy. Its
apparent historicity subtly encrypts a grim forewarning of Judah's
future, and, in its extensive treatment of otherness, Judges
explores the meaning of God's covenant with Israel. Robin Baker's
scholarly and perceptive reading draws on a deep understanding of
ancient Hebrew and Mesopotamian symbolic codes to interpret the
riddles in this many-layered text. The Book of Judges reveals
complex literary configurations from which past, present, and
future are simultaneously presented.
Max, a young anthropologist, discovers two handwritten pages
written by a Victorian adventuress who lived with an unknown tribe
in the Amazon. Determined to discover more, Max is dragged into a
world of mysterious suicides, pagan sects, child prostitution and
police harassment. Set in the English countryside and Amazon
rainforest, CABALLITO portrays an alternative society in which
fatherhood has no meaning and communities share everything,
including each other. Once, this was how all people lived.
A story of murder and mystery, love and sacrifice. Mark gives a
lift to a woman thrown bound and naked from a car. Her story is
bizarre but intriguing: her child cannot be her husband's, yet she
had no lovers. Mark, a zoologist specializing in Kalahari lions, is
pulled into increasingly violent situations until survival depends
on solving the mystery. As in PRIMAL and CABALLITO, the innovative
sexual science behind THE HITCHHIKER'S CHILD is real.
