This collection of high-quality articles in the field of
combinatorics, geometry, algebraic topology and theoretical
computer science is a tribute to Jiri Matousek, who passed away
prematurely in March 2015. It is a collaborative effort by his
colleagues and friends, who have paid particular attention to
clarity of exposition - something Jirka would have approved of. The
original research articles, surveys and expository articles,
written by leading experts in their respective fields, map Jiri
Matousek's numerous areas of mathematical interest.
This book comprises a collection of high quality papers in
selected topics of Discrete Mathematics, to celebrate the 60th
birthday of Professor Jarik Ne etril. Leading experts have
contributed survey and research papers in the areas of Algebraic
Combinatorics, Combinatorial Number Theory, Game theory, Ramsey
Theory, Graphs and Hypergraphs, Homomorphisms, Graph Colorings and
Graph Embeddings.
Turning Manet on his head, entering the thoughts of a post prandial
lion, viewing and buying a 'snorting' Hot Rod, imagining life on a
modern-day Titanic, wondering what happens to the story after a
book is finished or what a sonnet written by a modern day
Shakespeare might look like, 'The Weather on the Moon' ranges
across art, music, philosophy, literature and poetry, politics,
history, science and the natural world to encounter what it's like
to be alive. Bubbling away throughout this intense, sometimes
humorous, sometimes quirky, always compassionate poetry is a joy in
language, its possibilities, and music. As Graham Hardie writes,
his work 'fuses many elements into one short space: pathos; wit;
dexterous use of simile and metaphor; a heightened imagination; an
ability to make poetry from the commonplace.'

In all of Robin Thomas’s work there is a subtlety and wit so
contained that it invites re-reading. It takes full immersion to
savour the linguistic dexterity and intelligence at work, to
appreciate that humour often belies the absolute seriousness of
life. In reminded of something, this balance is particularly
delicate and the poignancy superbly controlled and utterly
affecting. With a yearning that can only come of love and loss, the
poems use the simplest of metaphors in the most lucid language to
convey memories and emotions so complex and heart-breaking that
they are almost beyond the scope of words—a collection that is
profoundly moving and exquisitely realised.
Full of wry intelligence, and a sideways perspective that digs
beneath the surface of things, Robin Thomas's second collection is
creative, witty and warm. Never predictable, leaning on images from
art, the cadences of jazz and remarkable moments, whether from
history or life, there is an unswerving pressure on language and a
sense of mischief that can turn out to be unnervingly serious. This
is accomplished, confident work.
Arresting and intelligent, the first full collection from Robin
Thomas exudes wit and warmth. Acutely observed and often wry,
Momentary Turmoil abounds with both imaginative leaps and a deeply
humane sensibility. 'Loud Carriage' Passengers are reminded that we
have four loud carriages, B to E, where you are expected to cough,
sniff and scrunch paper bags, to talk as loudly as you can and hoot
with laughter at jokes which are devoid of humour. You should
bellow into mobile phones, shouting details of your divorce, or why
Harry, sitting two seats away, has to be sacked or that you are on
the train. If you are quiet in any loud carriage you will be asked
to transfer to the punishment carriage, F, where, unless you
recant, you will be required to write an essay in which are
elucidated the provisions of Magna Carta, write a villanelle in
Latin and/or compile a report on the recent downturn in sales of
guttering in Lithuania. Author Biography Robin Thomas completed the
MA in Writing Poetry at Kingston University in 2012. He has had
poems published in a number of journals including Agenda, Envoi,
Orbis, Brittle Star, Poetry Salzburg, Poetry Scotland, Pennine
Platform, The High Window, South, Stand, Rialto and The
Interpreter's House. He has been shortlisted for the Buzzwords,
Bridport and Bath Poetry Cafe prizes and is represented in the
Stanley Spencer anthology published by Two Rivers Press in 2017.
His pamphlet, A Fury of Yellow, was published by Eyewear in
November, 2016. His second collection A Distant Hum was published
by Cinnamon in 2021.
