In February 2017, Rochelle Riley was reading Twitter posts and came
across a series of black-and-white photos of four-year-old Lola
dressed up as different African American women who had made
history. Rochelle was immediately smitten. She was so proud to see
this little girl so powerfully honor the struggle and achievement
of women several decades her senior. Rochelle reached out to Lola's
mom, Cristi Smith-Jones, and asked to pair her writing with
Smith-Jones's incredible photographs for a book. The goal? To teach
children on the cusp of puberty that they could be anything they
aspired to be, that every famous person was once a child who, in
some cases, overcame great obstacles to achieve. That They Lived:
African Americans Who Changed the World features Riley's grandson,
Caleb, and Lola photographed in timeless black and white, dressed
as important individuals such as business owners, educators, civil
rights leaders, and artists, alongside detailed biographies that
begin with the figures as young children who had the same
ambitions, fears, strengths, and obstacles facing them that readers
today may still experience. Muhammad Ali's bike was stolen when he
was twelve years old and the police officer he reported the crime
to suggested he learn how to fight before he caught up with the
thief. Bessie Coleman, the first African American female aviator,
collected and washed her neighbors' dirty laundry so she could
raise enough money for college. When Duke Ellington was seven years
old, he preferred playing baseball to attending the piano lessons
his mom had arranged. That They Lived fills in gaps in the history
that American children have been taught for generations. For
African American children, it will prove that they are more than
descendants of the enslaved. For all children, it will show that
every child can achieve great things and work together to make the
world a better place for all. That They Lived was made possible
through a grant provided by the Community Foundation for Southeast
Michigan.

Despite vast possible differences across geographic locations,
cultural practices, community values, and curricular priorities,
there are everyday events that are intimately familiar in the
context of early childhood care and education centres. By attending
to the daily events that are often overlooked and considerably
under-theorized, this insightful text highlights the complexity of
the everyday in early childhood settings. Contributions to this
edited collection are organized to follow the chronology of a
school day; each chapter draws upon post-foundational theories and
empirical qualitative data in order to (re)examine a familiar
routine within an early years centre, such as walking down the
hallway, eating a snack, napping, or changing one’s clothing. The
authors argue for a mundane early childhood praxis that attends to
the pedagogical possibilities within the seemingly unremarkable and
highlights its importance, especially during what are understood to
be unprecedented times. This book will be of interest to advanced
practitioners, graduate students, and scholars, and for use in
courses in early childhood education, childhood studies, and
educational foundations.

From the bestselling author of This Is Not How It Ends comes a
moving novel of two unfinished love stories and the music and
lyrics that bring them together. Journalist Cecilia James is a
sucker for a love song. So when she stumbles across a clue to the
identity of the muse for one of rock’s greatest, she devotes
herself to uncovering the truth, even as her own relationship is
falling apart. While writing an article for Rolling Stone, Cecilia
works to reveal the mystery that has intrigued fans and discovers a
classic tale of two soulmates separated by fate and circumstance.
Rock star Eddie Vee once sang with his soul, dedicating love songs
to Sara Friedman, his inspiration and first love. Now, Eddie takes
refuge in anonymity, closed off to the past. Sara, too, has
distanced herself from their love, moving thousands of miles away
to live the life she once railed against. As Eddie and Sara
tentatively open up to Cecilia about broken dreams, she struggles
to give them a happy ending. In the process, she learns that broken
hearts can be healed—even her own. What You Do To Me is the story
of a love song and of the triumph of the heart over the greatest of
odds. Even for those who have written off love forever.

This study examines the leadership of three African-American women
administrators in higher education, and how they have used their
spirituality as a lens to lead in the academy. The central
questions in this case study include: How do African-American women
make meaning of their spiritual selves in their everyday leadership
practices? How does their spirituality influence their work and the
type of relationships they develop with others in the academy? What
are the ways in which these three women have used their
spirituality as a lens to lead, and how does this leadership impact
the social, cultural and political construct of a male-dominated
arena?
First published in 2012, Doing Philosophy presents the basics of
how 'to do' philosophy - what philosophy is, how we can think, the
nature of logic, some special terms - in a straightforward and easy
to understand style. Then, using questions and exercises as well as
everyday examples, the author takes the reader on a wide-ranging
tour of key philosophical topics which, as well as the 'standard
fare' of logic, epistemology, mind, God etc., also includes
ethical, social, scientific, cultural and human issues such as
time, cosmology, war, animal rights, euthanasia, abortion,
genetics, evolution, and the meaning of life. The author's emphasis
throughout is that philosophy is accessible to anyone keen enough
to try and do it and that, as a subject, philosophy is practical,
fascinating and exciting. By encouraging independent critical
thinking and being succinct yet informative, the book involves the
reader with the history, the breadth of subject matter, the skills
of philosophising and the benefits that philosophy can offer to the
enquiring individual. The book accesses major philosophical topics
briefly, breaking them down into convenient points, with
challenging questions throughout and exercise questions at the end
of each chapter, whilst introducing major thinkers and their ideas.
There is an extensive further reading list to help those who wish
to take this absorbing subject further.
