In February 2017, Rochelle Riley was reading Twitter posts and came
across a series of black-and-white photos of four-year-old Lola
dressed up as different African American women who had made
history. Rochelle was immediately smitten. She was so proud to see
this little girl so powerfully honor the struggle and achievement
of women several decades her senior. Rochelle reached out to Lola's
mom, Cristi Smith-Jones, and asked to pair her writing with
Smith-Jones's incredible photographs for a book. The goal? To teach
children on the cusp of puberty that they could be anything they
aspired to be, that every famous person was once a child who, in
some cases, overcame great obstacles to achieve. That They Lived:
African Americans Who Changed the World features Riley's grandson,
Caleb, and Lola photographed in timeless black and white, dressed
as important individuals such as business owners, educators, civil
rights leaders, and artists, alongside detailed biographies that
begin with the figures as young children who had the same
ambitions, fears, strengths, and obstacles facing them that readers
today may still experience. Muhammad Ali's bike was stolen when he
was twelve years old and the police officer he reported the crime
to suggested he learn how to fight before he caught up with the
thief. Bessie Coleman, the first African American female aviator,
collected and washed her neighbors' dirty laundry so she could
raise enough money for college. When Duke Ellington was seven years
old, he preferred playing baseball to attending the piano lessons
his mom had arranged. That They Lived fills in gaps in the history
that American children have been taught for generations. For
African American children, it will prove that they are more than
descendants of the enslaved. For all children, it will show that
every child can achieve great things and work together to make the
world a better place for all. That They Lived was made possible
through a grant provided by the Community Foundation for Southeast
Michigan.

Ethical Practice of Statistics and Data Science is intended to
prepare people to fully assume their responsibilities to practice
statistics and data science ethically. Aimed at early career
professionals, practitioners, and mentors or supervisors of
practitioners, the book supports the ethical practice of statistics
and data science, with an emphasis on how to earn the designation
of, and recognize, "the ethical practitioner". The book features 47
case studies, each mapped to the Data Science Ethics Checklist
(DSEC); Data Ethics Framework (DEFW); the American Statistical
Association (ASA) Ethical Guidelines for Statistical Practice; and
the Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) Code of Ethics. It is
necessary reading for students enrolled in any data intensive
program, including undergraduate or graduate degrees in
(bio-)statistics, business/analytics, or data science. Managers,
leaders, supervisors, and mentors who lead data-intensive teams in
government, industry, or academia would also benefit greatly from
this book. This is a companion volume to Ethical Reasoning For A
Data-Centered World, also published by Ethics International Press
(2022). These are the first and only books to be based on, and to
provide guidance to, the ASA and ACM Ethical Guidelines/Code of
Ethics.
In Private Salons and the Art World of Enlightenment Paris,
Rochelle Ziskin explores in depth two remarkable private gatherings
generating significant art criticism during the middle of the
eighteenth century. She demonstrates how the sites harboring them
came to embody and disseminate their judgments. One politically
active group assembled at the house Mme Doublet shared with amateur
Petit de Bachaumont; at her "Mondays" for artists, Mme Geoffrin
collaborated with the powerful lover of antiquity Caylus and
amateurs including Mariette and Watelet. In focusing on official
Salons of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture, historians
too often overlook the crucial role of these frequent, regular
assemblies, where works of art were quite often first assessed and
taste shaped. This book will appeal to readers interested in
eighteenth-century French artistic culture, journalism, and women's
patronage. The painters discussed include Boucher, Van Loo, Charles
Coypel, Cochin, Vien, Pierre, Lagrenee, and Hubert Robert.
Age-Friendly Neighbourhood Planning and Design Guidelines: A
Singapore Case Study provides evidence-based research and examples
of existing good practices on health-enabling, age-friendly
neighbourhood provision. These relate to the planning and design of
outdoor spaces and enabling opportunities for active, healthy
ageing. Importantly, our research prioritises the need to engage
with older people when creating neighbourhood environments that
contribute to healthy ageing in place. The book and its
supplementary toolkits touches on 3 main stages of age-friendly
neighbourhood project - planning (environmental audit),
implementation (planning and design guidelines) and evaluation of
progress made (post-implementation review). We hope that these
materials will contribute to the ongoing discourse of how to
(re)envision urban neighbourhoods to enhance health and quality of
life as people age. Needless to say, they do not supersede but
support existing guidelines or regulations to improve everyday
neighbourhood environment for healthy ageing in place.Co-creation
with older people is a central tenet of our research on ageing
urbanism at the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities. The Lee
Li Ming Programme in Ageing Urbanism conducts applied research on
built environment and health of ageing population, arguing for a
more integrated environmental, social and spatial approach to
identify the connection between the built environment, health and
quality of life that can inform the design for age-friendly
neighbourhoods and communities.
