atmospheric setting of a prayer by the Spanish mystic, St Teresa of
Avila. This work is both comforting and meditative, reflecting the
mood of the text, and the music adds a beautifully haunting
quality, through the use of a murmuring two-note motif, widely
arching melodies, and reflective imitation. Commissioned by The
Genesis Foundation for Harry Christophers and The Sixteen, this
piece has been recorded by them on the disc 'O Guiding Night'
(COR16090).
for SATB and piano O Guiding Night is a colourful and evocative
setting of the text 'The Dark Night' by 16th-century Spanish
mystic/poet St John of the Cross. Williams's setting really gets to
the heart of the words, conveying a range of emotions from hushed
excitement to joyous rapture. Sumptuous harmonies and a strong
sense of narrative are combined with charming piano interludes in
an almost rhapsodic work, which would stand out in any concert.
Suitable for SATB and piano, This up-tempo arrangement combines a
funky piano part with walking pizzicato bass, a strong tune, scat
vocal lines, and swing-band style vocal harmonies to make a
show-stopper.
