Biological Membranes - Their Structure and Function (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980): Roger Harrison Biological Membranes - Their Structure and Function (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980)
Roger Harrison
R1,586 Discovery Miles 15 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

to the Second Edition RESEARCH INTO MEMBRANE-ASSOCIATED PHENOMENA HAS EXPANDED VERY greatly in the five years that have elapsed since the first edition of Biological Membranes was published. It is to take account of rapid advances in the field that we have written the present edition. There is now general acceptance of the fluid mosaic model of membrane structure and of the chemiosmotic interpretation of energetic processes, and our attention has shifted from justifying these ideas to explaining membrane functions in their terms. Much more information has become available concerning the role of the plasma membrane in the cell's recognition of and response to external signals, and this is reflected in the increased coverage of these topics in the book. The general form of the book remains the same. As before, a list of suggested reading, sub-divided by chapter, is provided and this has been expanded to include a greater proportion of original papers. The book is still primarily designed as an advanced undergraduate text and also to serve as an introduction for post-graduate workers entering the field of membrane research. We have taken cognizance of the comments of many reviewers, colleagues and students on the first edition and thank them for their contributions. In particular we wish to acknowledge our colleagues R. Eisenthal, G. D. Holman, D. W. Hough, and A. H. Rose. Dr. C. R.

Lead Pollution - Causes and control (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984): Roger Harrison Lead Pollution - Causes and control (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984)
Roger Harrison
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At the time of writing, the topic of lead pollution is the subject of an intense and sometimes heated debate. The argument centres upon possible adverse health effects arising from exposure of children to current environmental levels of lead. Such arguments now appear little closer to resolution than they did five years ago, although the development of ever more sophisticated biochemical and epidemiological techniques may eventually provide an answer. Over the past five to ten years, as the general public has become aware of the lead issue, pressure has been put upon governments to limit emissions of lead, and hence limit or reduce the exposure of the population to the metal. Govern ments and governmental agencies have responded in several ways, varying between those who prefer to take little or no action on the basis that they see no cause for concern, and those who have taken firm action after concluding that the scientific and medical evidence warrants this approach. Any effective control strategy for lead requires knowledge of the sources of environmental exposure and an understanding of the pathways of this metal in the environment. This book aims to provide such information and to explain the methods available for limiting emissions of lead from the most important sources. To put this information in context a chapter on the routes of human exposure to lead and the health effects is included."

From love I wished I had and love that could never be because of circumstance. They tell the story of my heart and my soul. To those who can relate to them I hope it brings you solace to know you are not alone. For those who can not relate to them I wish you blessings.

"I have always believed that every person's story, told truthfully, is both compelling and universal. Consultant's Journey affirms this. It combines the intimacy of a personal journey and the emergence of organization development as a profession. What is engaging about Roger Harrison's story is that it documents the tension of both a person and a profession in crisis-crisis in the best sense, as a continuous search for purpose, for relevance, for some way of giving meaning to a personal life and a vocation. Roger is as unrelenting in his desire to choose a life of service in the face of his love of self-expression; autonomy, economic success, and recognition." From the Foreword by Peter Block
