Popular Politics in Nineteenth Century England provides an
accessible introduction to the culture of English popular politics
between 1815 and 1900, the period from Luddism to the New
Liberalism. This is an area that has attracted great historical
interest and has undergone fundamental revision in the last two
decades. Did the industrial revolution create the working class
movement or was liberalism (which transcended class divisions) the
key mode of political argument?
The publisher Edward Lloyd (1815-1890) helped shape Victorian popular culture in ways that have left a legacy that lasts right up to today. He was a major pioneer of both popular fiction and journalism but has never received extended scholarly investigation until now. Lloyd shaped the modern popular press: Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper became the first paper to sell over a million copies. Along with publishing songs and broadsides, Lloyd dominated the fiction market in the early Victorian period issuing Gothic stories such as Varney the Vampire (1845-7) and other 'penny dreadfuls', which became bestsellers. Lloyd's publications introduced the enduring figure of Sweeney Todd whilst his authors penned plagiarisms of Dickens's novels, such as Oliver Twiss (1838-9). Many readers in the early Victorian period may have been as likely to have encountered the author of Pickwick in a Lloyd-published plagiarism as in the pages of the original author. This book makes us rethink the early reception of Dickens. In this interdisciplinary collection, leading scholars explore the world of Edward Lloyd and his stable of writers, such as Thomas Peckett Prest and James Malcolm Rymer. The Lloyd brand shaped popular taste in the age of Dickens and the Chartists. Edward Lloyd and his World fills a major gap in the histories of popular fiction and journalism, whilst developing links with Victorian politics, theatre and music.

How did the West End of London become the world's leading pleasure district? What is the source of its magnetic appeal? How did the centre of London become Theatreland? London's West End, 1800-1914 is the first ever history of the area which has enthralled millions. The reader will discover the growth of theatres, opera houses, galleries, restaurants, department stores, casinos, exhibition centres, night clubs, street life, and the sex industry. The area from the Strand to Oxford Street came to stand for sensation and vulgarity but also the promotion of high culture. The West End produced shows and fashions whose impact rippled outwards around the globe. During the nineteenth century, an area that serviced the needs of the aristocracy was opened up to a wider public whilst retaining the imprint of luxury and prestige. Rohan McWilliam tells the story of the great artists, actors and entrepreneurs who made the West End: figures such as Gilbert and Sullivan, the playwright Dion Boucicault, the music hall artiste Jenny Hill, and the American Harry Gordon Selfridge who wanted to create the best shop in the world. At the same time, McWilliam explores the distinctive spaces created in the West End, from the glamour of Drury Lane and Covent Garden, through to low life bars and taverns. We encounter the origins of the modern star system and celebrity culture. Much of modern culture and consumer society was shaped by a relatively small area in the middle of London. This pioneering study establishes why that was.
It was called the 'Tichborne Romance' and it became the greatest cause-celebre of the Victorian age. In 1865, a butcher from Wagga Wagga in Australia proclaimed himself to be the English aristocrat, Sir Roger Tichborne, thought to have died at sea many years before. He fetched up in England and insisted on the restoration of the Tichborne inheritance. Some believed him (including many who had known Roger Tichborne) even though he looked nothing like the original. Others insisted that the butcher was an impostor. The Tichborne Claimant's appearance triggered two of the longest trials in English legal history and divided the nation. The public was fascinated by the lurid revelations from the courtroom about seduction, corruption and intrigue amongst both Britain's elite and in the back streets of London. The Claimant became a hero to the working class who insisted that he was genuine and backed a bizarre campaign to support him. An MP was even elected to parliament on the back of the Tichborne cause, which became one of the largest popular agitations of the modern era. Was the Claimant a butcher or a baronet? Rohan McWilliam employs this colourful and sensational story to explore the mentality of the Victorians. From the Australian Bush to the pubs and music halls of London's East End, the book reconstructs the flamboyant exploits of the Claimant and the stories he told about himself. McWilliam recreates the extraordinary personalities that the Claimant attracted including his barrister, Edward Kenealy (an Irish lawyer who saw himself as a religious prophet), the spiritualist Georgina Weldon and the swashbuckling demagogue John De Morgan. In this multi-layered cultural history, McWilliam investigates the case by exploring radical politics, legal London, popular souvenirs, Staffordshire figurines, street music, comedy and melodrama.
