Racism that is communicated through racial microaggressions is more difficult to locate and reconstruct than the racism that was built into law during enslavement and Jim Crow. The Mask of Microagressions: Studies of Racism in the US presents tools that aid in understanding historical sources of racism and how racism has transformed into microaggressions today. This book is organized in a way that presents historical backdrops to racism as it applies to subjects, such as education, with a brief analysis. The Chapters indicating present microaggressions are sketches that provide students with a segue between overt and subtle racism. At the end of the book are original historical sources that provide contextual frames for subjects being presented. Following each Chapter, we have provided questions, potential research projects, and suggestions for further reading that will assist students in learning more about historical racism and present racial microaggressions.
