Gregory Peck stars in this classic adaptation of Mark Twain's short story of the same name. When American sailor Henry Adams (Peck) comes across two wealthy brothers who have, with the help of the Bank of England, developed a single note with a value of one million pounds, he finds himself part of an unusual wager.
Classic comedy directed by Ralph Smart. A close family bond allows Victor Hemsley (Ronald Squire) and his daughter, Clare (Peggy Cummins), to pose as husband and wife. Using this to their advantage, the pair perform an elaborate scam to yield money from other guests living in hotels throughout the Riviera. But when Clare meets British Treasury worker Terence Winch (Terence Morgan) her outlook changes. Seeking a life away from the scamming and scheming, Clare sees Terence as a way out, but before leaving for good she agrees to stage one more scam with her father. However, when their latest plan goes wrong and the pair then flee to Italy, Terence begins pursuing Clare for different reasons altogether.
Roy Boulting directs this 1950s British comedy starring Glynis Johns as a woman whose sympathy for those in need plays havoc with her love life. Though it may seem to outsiders that Josephine Luton (Johns) is a good match for her fiancé, businessman Alan Hartley (Donald Sinden), there is a major problem - Alan is doing too well to elicit her sympathy. This goes instead to his friend David Hewer (Peter Finch), a playwright whose lack of success thus far leaves him in a melancholy state of mind. Josephine duly begins a romantic relationship with David to try and cheer him up, but are there men in even more desperate straits that could steal her from him?
Anthony Pelissier writes and directs this dark fantasy drama based on a short story by D.H. Lawrence. An adolescent boy, Paul (John Howard Davies), lives with his upper class family in London. His mother, Hester (Valerie Hobson), is a compulsive shopper, continually spending far beyond the family's means, while his father, Richard (Hugh Sinclair), is a gambler who eventually loses his job as a result of his bad habits. As his family fast approaches bankruptcy, Paul befriends handyman Bassett (John Mills) and discovers that he can magically predict the winner of horse races by riding his rocking horse. The money is soon rolling in, but Paul realises too late that it comes at a fatally high price.
