This book reads like a war-time thriller.
We hear for the first time from internationalists who secretly worked for the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto We Sizwe (MK), in the struggle to liberate South Africa from apartheid rule. They acted as couriers, provided safe houses in the neighbouring states and within South Africa, helped infiltrate combatants across borders, and smuggled tonnes of weapons into the country in the most creative of ways. Driven by a spirit of international solidarity, they were prepared to take huge risks and face danger which dogged them at every turn. At least three were captured and served long terms of imprisonment, while others were arrested and, following international pressure, deported. They reveal what motivated them as volunteers, not mercenaries, who gained nothing for their endeavours save for the self-esteem in serving a just cause.
Against such clandestine involvement, the book includes contributions from key role players in the international Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) and its public mobilisation to isolate the apartheid regime. These include worldwide campaigns like Stop the Sports Tours, boycotting South African products, and black American solidarity.
The Cuban, East German and Russian contributions outline those countries’ support for the ANC and MK. The public, global AAM campaigns provide the dimension from which internationalists who secretly served MK emerged.
This is an invaluable historic resource, explaining in highly readable style the significance of international solidarity for today’s youth in challenging times.

Joe Modise (1929-2001), a Sophiatown bus driver-turned freedom fighter, was a humble man who tended to avoid the limelight. A protege of the Mandela leadership in the 1950s mass struggle, he was one of the youngest among that decade’s Treason Trial, and was a senior commander of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) from its inception, facing danger and privation most of his adult life. Modise served with acclaim as democratic South Africa’s first Minister of Defence and won the loyalty of his former enemy when many thought the country could be plunged into civil war or held to ransom by old-order apartheid generals. The fact that Nelson Mandela and Oliver Tambo selected him for key positions over five decades of exacting struggle testifies to their sustained confidence in him. This fact alone belies the impression some might have that he was an amoral warlord. As a government minister, he led a modest lifestyle and did not die a wealthy man.
This book interlinks frank and engaging interviews with family and friends, comrades in-arms and former adversaries. Those who knew him reveal a warm human being and provide endearing insights into who Modise really was.
As a soldier, statesman and leader, he has left behind an astonishing legacy that deserves to be widely known.

Perimetry is the systematic measurement of visual field function.
It is primarily used in the diagnosis of glaucoma, but also for
retinal diseases and neuro-ophthalmic disorders. This book is a
practical guide to the use of perimetry in the diagnosis of eye
disorders. Divided into three sections, the book begins with an
overview of the technique, describing the normal visual field and
choice of perimeters. The following section provides detail on the
diagnostic uses of perimetry, as well as clinical case studies. The
third section examines special situations, with the final chapters
providing commentary on recent advances in perimetry, care and
maintenance of perimeters, and the history of perimetry. Key Points
Practical guide to use of perimetry in the diagnosis of eye

commentary on recent advances, care and maintenance of perimeters

For the whole of the last half-century, most theoretical
syntacticians have assumed that knowledge of language is different
from the tasks of speaking and understanding. There have been some
dissenters, but, by and large, this view still holds sway.
This book takes a different view: it continues the task set in
hand by Kempson et al (2001) of arguing that the common-sense
intuition is correct that knowledge of language consists in being
able to use it in speaking and understanding. The Dynamics of
Language argues that interpretation is built up across as sequence
of words relative to some context and that this is all that is
needed to explain the structural properties of language. The
dynamics of how interpretation is built up is the syntax of a
language system. The authors' first task is to convey to a general
linguistic audience with a minimum of formal apparatus, the
substance of that formal system. Secondly, as linguists, they set
themselves the task of applying the formal system to as broad an
array of linguistic puzzles as possible, the languages analysed
ranging from English to Japanese and Swahili.
"This book makes an uncommon achievement in successfully using
detailed analyses of typologically diverse languages to address
foundational questions about what it means to know a language and
about the relation between speaking and understanding. This book
will be of interest to anybody who is serious about the cognitive
science of syntax and semantics."
Colin Phillips, University of Maryland, USA
"For anyone interested in the basic nature of natural language
syntax, this book is a necessary, and enjoyable, read. The authors
provide a new take on howinterpretations are constructed by
language users, and back up their general theoretical proposals
with original analyses of an eclectic range of linguistic
phenomena. The exposition
is clear and engaging-and challenging. You will have some of your
assumptions shaken up; whether they fall back in place, or are
radically rearranged, the experience is stimulating."

The Higher Education Learners' Learning Outcomes (HELLO) project
offers a comprehensive solution to the challenge of creating
comparative metrics of learning outcomes that are valid across
various cultures, languages, and higher education institution
types. Traditional methods of assessing learning outcomes in higher
education have limited institutions' abilities to compare student
performance to that of their peers, hindering efforts to improve
teaching practices and enhance student learning. This project
creates learning outcome measures that are culturally and
linguistically appropriate for different types of higher education
institutions, enabling institutions to compare student performance
to that of their peers as part of efforts to improve teaching
practices and enhance student learning. Design and Implementation
of Higher Education Learners' Learning Outcomes (HELLO), edited by
Kuntal Barua, Neyara Radwan Mohammed, Virendra Singh, and Ronnie
Figueiredo, provides a persuasive account of the HELLO project and
is intended for all students, teachers, administrations, and higher
education institutions interested in improving teaching practices
and enhancing student learning outcomes. The book presents the
challenges in traditional methods of assessing learning outcomes,
the limitations of diverse attempts to fill the quality information
gap, and the rationale for HELLO beyond collegial approaches and
student-centered learning. The book also explores key challenges in
developing and executing HELLO, such as the risks of ranking and
value-added methodologies. By offering a comprehensive overview of
the HELLO project, this book provides higher education institutions
with the information and motivation they need to participate in the
project and enhance their students' learning outcomes.

Environmental Pollution and Public Health: Case Studies on Air,
Water and Soil from an Interdisciplinary Perspective provides
detailed case studies showing real-world applications of the latest
technologies surrounding pollution in air, water and soil. Sections
cover the environment and its nexus with public health,
highlighting how the health of our environment can invariably
influence our public health. Following this, atmospheric pollution
is addressed, identifying various air pollutants, methods for
identification, impacts on the environment and health, and
mitigating technologies. Final sections are dedicated to liquid
waste management, focusing on wastewater and treatment options
including emerging technologies that are compared to existing
options. The book finishes with case studies and information on
regulatory frameworks for environmental pollution for those wanting
to implement the remediation techniques covered. This is a
necessary read for postgraduates, academics, professionals and
researchers in environmental science, soil science, environmental
health, and waste management who need the latest sustainable
remediation practices and case studies and the efficacy of the
associated techniques.
