This book presents an analysis of how the grassroots movement of
Guangchang Wu or 'square dance' in China has become a national
phenomenon. Through oral narratives offering rich descriptions of
lived encounters, the experiences of those involved in leading,
organizing, teaching and learning Guangchang Wu are revealed.
Through these narratives, this book serves to understand the
leadership practices occurring and how this dance practice is
deeply rooted in the complexities of China's rapid economic
development, acceleration of urbanisation, and the desire for a
healthier and more communal lifestyle.
Marxist Modernism presents for the first time Gillian Rose's 1979
lectures on the Frankfurt School, art, and politics. Delivered soon
after the publication of her now classic study of Adorno, The
Melancholy Science, the lecture series expands upon this work to
explore the lives and philosophies of a wider range of Frankfurt
School members and affiliates: from Adorno, to Lukács, Brecht,
Bloch, Benjamin, and Horkheimer. In particular, Rose discusses
their debates concerning various twentieth-century modernist art
movements, and outlines the ways in which each theorist developed
Marx's theory of commodity fetishism into a Marxist theory of
culture. Marxist Modernism serves as a comprehensive yet concise
and conversational introduction to the Frankfurt School, but it
also provides a new resource for one of the twentieth century's
most important philosophers: Gillian Rose. The volume will provide
an accessible encounter with Rose's thought for those not yet
acquainted with her formidable work, while provoking a renewed
engagement with the Marxist basis of her oeuvre for those who are.
An Afterword by the renowned intellectual historian Martin Jay
reviews the lectures and contextualises them within the wider
reception of the Frankfurt School in the Anglophone world.

An inspiring and powerful story of a young woman's courage to
physically, emotionally, and spiritually heal after her leg is
almost severed in a motorcycle accident. A compelling, enjoyable
read, this book offers intimate glimpses of the author's personal
weaknesses and shows her determination to find an inner source of
direction and purpose. Throughout the tender, painful moments of
her failing marriage, her drug abuse, and difficult relationships,
the author shares with you her depth of strength, her faith and her
joy of her victory over physical healing and spiritual
transformation. Gayle Rose's life demonstrates that the human
spirit, when fused with inner resolve, can be a powerful tool to
face life's challenges and embrace the "Goodness of Life."
Lucretius (Titus Lucretius Carus) lived ca. 99-ca. 55 BCE, but the
details of his career are unknown. He is the author of the great
didactic poem in hexameters, "De Rerum Natura" ("On the Nature of
Things"). In six books compounded of solid reasoning, brilliant
imagination, and noble poetry, he expounds the scientific theories
of the Greek philosopher Epicurus, with the aim of dispelling fear
of the gods and fear of death and so enabling man to attain peace
of mind and happiness.
In Book 1 he establishes the general principles of the atomic
system, refutes the views of rival physicists, and proves the
infinity of the universe and of its two ultimate constituents,
matter and void. In Book 2 he explains atomic movement, the variety
of atomic shapes, and argues that the atoms lack colour, sensation,
and other secondary qualities. In Book 3 he expounds the nature and
composition of mind and spirit, proves their mortality, and argues
that there is nothing to fear in death. Book 4 explains the nature
of sensation and thought, and ends with an impressive account of
sexual love. Book 5 describes the nature and formation of our
world, astronomical phenomena, the beginnings of life on earth, and
the development of civilization. In Book 6 the poet explains
various atmospheric and terrestrial phenomena, including thunder,
lightning, earthquakes, volcanoes, the magnet, and plagues.
The work is distinguished by the fervour and poetry of the
author.
The countries of the southern and eastern Mediterranean-- Morocco,
Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria--have
undergone major turmoil in recent years, with civil war, occupation
and uprising. Women, Dance and Revolution offers a highly original
perspective on the political and cultural tensions through the
experiences of contemporary dance practitioners from the region. It
shows how these women--all established performers, choreographers
and teachers--have responded to the changes brought about by the
troubles. Through dance they engage in public protest and
performance, endure violence and repression, and reveal new
meanings of identity, gender and body politics. Their journeys of
dance illuminate how, despite moments of disillusionment, objection
and betrayal, being a woman and being a dancer can still mean many
things and influence society in many ways in the Arab World.
