This book describes human hereditary ion channel diseases of
voltage- and ligand-gated ion channels covering the diverse fields
of medicine myology, neurology, cardiology, and nephrology
requiring a wide and interdisciplinary readership. Interesting
parallels in pathogenetic mechanisms of disease are especially
emphasized to interest even highly specialized readers in entities
outside of their fields. Each author has written an objective
overview of his or her particular subject in a way that should
allow the reader within a short period of time to obtain a
comprehensive picture of the present state of art.
This book offers an in-depth analysis of the function of
certification in general and of certification systems in a range of
different sectors. The authors examine certification from both a
theoretical and a practical standpoint and from the perspectives of
different disciplines, including law, economics, management, and
the social sciences. They also discuss instruments that help ensure
the quality of certification, which can range from public law
measures such as accreditation, to private law incentives, to
deterrents, such as liability towards victims. Further, they assess
the role of competition between certification bodies. Readers will
learn the commonalities as well as the necessary distinctions
between certification bodies in various fields, which may stem from
the different functions they serve. These similarities and
differences may also be the result of different types of damage
that the certified producer or service provider could potentially
cause to individuals or to the public at large. Often, companies
use certification bodies as an argument to assure the general
public, e.g. regarding the safety of medical products. Closer
inspection reveals, however, that sometimes certification bodies
themselves lack credibility. The book offers essential information
on the benefits and pitfalls associated with certification.

Philosophy has been called the science of the possible by
philosophers as diverse as Christian Wolff and Bertrand Russell.
The modal concepts of possibility and necessity, however, have
proved to be ambiguous and recalcitrant to analysis, and their
relation to the concept of reality have remained problematic up to
the present day. Transcending the worn-out dichotomy between
analytic and continental philosophy, this collection of papers
takes a fresh look at the metaphysics and logic of possibility and
reality, and illuminates them from a great variety of perspectives.
Topics include the history of philosophy (from Greek antiquity to
David Lewis) as well as the semantics of possible worlds; logic,
mathematics and computer science as well as literature and the new
media; forms of scientific as well as fictional discourse."
A collection of more than 40 patterns for animal-themed bed quilts,
rugs, mats, wall hangings and mug rugs all made using jelly roll
pre-cut fabric. Quilters love pre-cut fabric strips because they
are quick and easy to use and the fabrics always coordinate. All of
the projects in this book are constructed from pre-cut fabric
strips that are sub-cut into rectangles and then turned into 60
degree shapes by trimming the corners in a special way and we
include a template for this if you don't have a 60 degree ruler.
All of the techniques are explained with detailed step-by-step
instructions and comprehensive diagrams. This collection features
over 40 patterns for animal themed quilts, rugs and more - perfect
for children's bedrooms and nurseries. As well as the 40 plus
patterns there are instructions for readers to create even more
variations by mixing and matching the different design elements and
motifs, and all of the projects have an ability rating so you can
find your level and build your skills as you go. In addition to the
main animals, in this collection there are designs for motifs
including paw prints and even fish - ideal for pet bowl mats - and
there are instructions for how to mix and match these elements to
make personalised variations. The main projects include crib
quilts, cuddle throw quilts, quilted wall hangings for decoration,
floor rugs, mug rugs and table and pet bowl mats. There are also
instructions for how to make themed banners (bunting) using the
leftover jelly roll strips so for each animal there are a variety
of different projects to to decorate a room. The instructions for
cutting and piecing the fabrics are very comprehensive with
step-by-step instructions and diagrams for fast and accurate
patchwork. As well as the piecing instructions there are general
instructions for how to make a quilt sandwich, quilting techniques
and binding and finishing the projects. Ira explains everything you
need to get great results with a professional finish including how
to add a non-slip backing to rugs and display strips for the wall
hangings so you can hang them without damaging your walls. So in no
time you will be making fun animal jelly roll quilts to brighten up
your home.
Hans-Werner Wahl, Hermann Brenner, Heidrun Mollenkopf, Dietrich
Rothenbacher and Christoph Rott Ageing research has been identi?ed
as a prototypical ?eld of inquiry deserving the full exploitation
of single discipline approaches and interdisciplinary synergies
amongst these single perspectives. Although this is a generally
accepted insight, there still is a strong need to provide models of
how this global and most fundamental challenge can be dealt with.
It seems in any case necessary to narrow down the wide scope of
ageing research issues to sets of key constructs most promising in
terms of interdisciplinary cross-fertilisation.
Againstthis,themajoraimofthebookistoprovideacomprehensive treatment
of one well-selected set of key issues of recent ageing research,
i. e. health, competence and well-being. In addition, the book's
ambition is to identify priorities for future ageing research and
to further new avenues for interdisciplinary approaches and social
policy applications. The substance of the book is based on an
international conference which took place on June 18 and 19, 2004
in Heidelberg, Germany. Framed within the array of health,
competence and well-being perspectives in ageing research, the idea
of the conf- ence was to provide an integrated presentation of
?ndings generated in the German Centre for Research on Ageing at
the University of Heidelberg (Deutsches Zentrum f. ur

you can customize your crochet slippers you'll be able to create
unlimited options!
Ott and Longnecker's AN INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICAL METHODS AND
DATA ANALYSIS, Seventh Edition, provides a broad overview of
statistical methods for advanced undergraduate and graduate
students from a variety of disciplines who have little or no prior
course work in statistics. The authors teach students to solve
problems encountered in research projects, to make decisions based
on data in general settings both within and beyond the university
setting, and to become critical readers of statistical analyses in
research papers and news reports. The first eleven chapters present
material typically covered in an introductory statistics course, as
well as case studies and examples that are often encountered in
undergraduate capstone courses. The remaining chapters cover
regression modeling and design of experiments.
Frontiers in Belief Revision is a unique collection of leading edge
research in Belief Revision. It contains the latest innovative
ideas of highly respected and pioneering experts in the area,
including Isaac Levi, Krister Segerberg, Sven Ove Hansson, Didier
Dubois, and Henri Prade. The book addresses foundational issues of
inductive reasoning and minimal change, generalizations of the
standard belief revision theories, strategies for iterated
revisions, probabilistic beliefs, multiagent environments and a
variety of data structures and mechanisms for implementations. This
book is suitable for students and researchers interested in
knowledge representation and in the state of the art of the theory
and practice of belief revision.
The book is made up of 21 chapters from 25 presentations at the
23rd MAVI conference in Essen, which featured Alan Schoenfeld as
keynote speaker. Of major interest to MAVI participants is the
relationship between teachers' professed beliefs and classroom
practice. The first section is dedicated to classroom practices and
beliefs regarding those practices, taking a look at prospective or
practicing teachers' views of different practices such as
decision-making, the roles of explanations, problem-solving,
patterning, and the use of play. The focus of the second section in
this book deals with teacher change, which is notoriously
difficult, even when the teachers themselves are interested in
changing their practice. The third section of this book centers on
the undercurrents of teaching and learning mathematics, what rises
in various situations, causing tensions and inconsistencies. The
last section of this book takes a look at emerging themes in
affect-related research. In this section, papers discuss attitudes
towards assessment.
This is the first book to comprehensively analyze the work of Hans
Micklitz, one of the leading scholars in the field of EU economic
law. It brings together analysts, academic friends and critics of
Hans Micklitz and results in a unique collection of essays that
evaluate his work on European Economic Law and Regulation. The
contributions discuss a wide range of Micklitz' work: from his
theoretical work on private law beyond party autonomy, with a
special focus on its regulatory function, to the illustration of
how his work has built the basis for current solutions such as used
in solving the financial crisis. The book is divided into sections
covering foundations of private law, regulatory law, competition
and intellectual property law, product safety law, consumer
contract law and the enforcement of law. This book clearly shows
the enormous impact of Hans Micklitz' work on the EU legal system
in both scholarship and practice.
Sugarcane is the source of over three quarters of the world's
sugar, and is grown widely in the tropics and sub-tropics. Despite
rising demand, average yields have not increased significantly,
partly because of continued vulnerability to pests and diseases. In
addition, cultivation has been seen as damaging biodiversity and
soil health with a negative effect on both yields and the
environment. This volume summarises the wealth of research
addressing these challenges. Volume 2 reviews advances in breeding
and the management of pests and diseases. Part 1 assesses the
latest research on sugarcane genetics, physiology and genetic
diversity, and how this is informing advances in conventional,
marker-assisted and transgenic breeding techniques. Part 2
discusses progress in understanding bacterial, fungal and viral
diseases and their management, as well as the management of insect
and nematode pests as well as weeds. With its distinguished editor
and international team of expert authors, this will be a standard
reference for sugarcane scientists, growers, government and
non-governmental agencies responsible for supporting and monitoring
the impact of sugarcane cultivation. It is accompanied by a
companion volume reviewing cultivation and sustainability issues.
"In this timely publication, Dr Rott has sourced contributions from
scientists working on cane throughout the tropics...Richly
referenced, this is both an informed and informative book that is
well written. It will appeal to both researchers and cane growers."

"Form-Meaning Connections in Second Language Acquisition" is an
interdisciplinary and timely edited book of essays and empirical
studies, most of which are based on the papers presented at the
Form and Meaning Conference held in Chicago in 2002. The goal of
the conference and now of the book is to present linguistic and
cognitive approaches to second language acquisition, attempting to
integrate external and internal issues in interlanguage
development, while outlining directions for future research. The
editors address questions, such as: What is the nature and sequence
of the form-meaning mapping process? How are these connections
made? How are these connections used to construct grammars and
lexicons? And, how can conditions and external factors be
manipulated to improve the chances of making these form-meaning
connections?
Contributors to this volume include such second language
acquisition scholars as Susan Gass, Nick Ellis, Kathleen
Bardovi-Harlig, Catherine Doughty, and Diane Larsen-Freeman. They
address these form-meaning issues from a variety of settings and
from multiple perspectives.
Researchers and graduate students in applied linguistics, cognitive
psychology, linguistics, and language pedagogy will find this
volume to be an important resource.

Adolescent Violence in the Home examines a form of violence that
has a profound impact on families but is often overlooked and
frequently misunderstood: teen aggression and violence toward
members of their family-especially parents. Violence in adolescents
is often seen as the result of a mental-health diagnosis,
delinquency, or as a response to dysfunctional parenting, and
though understanding a youth's mental-health status or a parenting
style can be helpful, complete focus on either is misplaced.
Adolescent Violence in the Home uses a restorative framework,
developed by the authors and in use in court systems and
organizations around the world, to situate violent behaviors in the
context of power and the intergenerational cycle of violence.
Readers will come away from this book with a profound understanding
of the social and individual factors that lead youth to use
violence and how adolescent violence affects parents, and they'll
also learn about a variety of interventions that specifically
address teen violence against parents.
