This book takes the reader further along the path traversed by the
acclaimed Card by Card. The author presents intriguing problems in
declarer play and defense and follows them with comprehensive
analysis, given with a light touch and the occasional entertaining
diversion. The critics on other books by Roy Hughes: Building a
Bidding System "Anyone who considers himself to be a serious
student of the game will enjoy reading this book and learn plenty
in the process." - Fred Gitelman Card by Card - Further Adventures
at the Bridge Table "Hughes writes with a gentle authority that
endears him to readers and I can thoroughly recommend this book to
players at or seeking to attain a high level of play." - Julian
Pottage Canada's Bridge Warriors: Eric Murray and Sami Kehela "This
is a great look at a great career. Highly recommended." - Bridge
Magazine The Contested Auction "Hughes has written one good book
after another, covering all aspects of the game." - The Bridge
World Roy Hughes lives with his wife and two children in Toronto,
Canada. Two of his books have won the International Bridge Press
Association's Book of the Year award. His other pursuits include
chess, classical music and astronomy.
Canadian expert Roy Hughes' first book, Building a Bidding System
(2005; ISBN 9781897106 02 5), has become a must-read for expert
pairs looking to develop effective constructive bidding methods.
Now Hughes turns to the theory and practice of competitive
auctions, a critical component of the modern game. Beginning again
by establishing what the bidding system needs to accomplish, Hughes
goes on to discuss every type of contested auction, and recommends
useful methods and agreements from which the reader can select.
This is a state-of-the-art discussion, covering many topics in
detail that have at best seen cursory treatment in print up to now.
This book gives the reader a chance to watch an expert play a
number of hands, either as declarer or defender. Most of the hands
come from the author's own experience in top-level play. As usual
in this type of presentation, the reader is offered the opportunity
to make his own decisions at critical points in the play, and will
be able to learn from situations where an expert took a different
line of play - rightly or wrongly! It is aimed at advanced skill
levels.
This book discusses the theory of bridge bidding for advanced
players, with emphasis on the principles behind an effective
bidding system. These include the concepts of Useful Space, Relays,
Transfers and Dialogue Bidding, as well as creative ideas about
Slam Bidding and Deception. The book addresses the conflicting
requirements for a system that is at the same time robust and
antagonistic, but also accurate. ROY HUGHES is a Canadian bridge
expert who has played in a number of World Championships. His
background in mathematics and linguistics has led him to think a
great deal about the theory and structure of effective bidding
systems. Roy is also an accomplished musician, a talent he shares
with his wife, Erika.
