Winner of the Whitbread Biography of the Year.
William Gladstone was, with Tennyson, Newman, Dickens, Carlyle, and Darwin, one of the stars of nineteenth-century British life. He spent sixty-three of his eighty-nine years in the House of Commons and was prime minister four times, a unique accomplishment. From his critical role in the formation of the Liberal Party to his preoccupation with the cause of Irish Home Rule, he was a commanding politician and statesman nonpareil. But Gladstone the man was much more: a classical scholar, a wide-ranging author, a vociferous participant in all the great theological debates of the day, a voracious reader, and an avid walker who chopped down trees for recreation. He was also a man obsessed with the idea of his own sinfulness, prone to self-flagellation and persistent in the practice of accosting prostitutes on the street and attempting to persuade them of the errors of their ways.
Gladstone, by historian and eminent politician Roy Jenkins, is a full and deep portrait of a complicated man, offering a sweeping picture of a tumultuous century in British history, and is also a brilliant example of the biographer's art.
From the admiralty to the miner's strike, from the Battle of
Britain to eventual victory over Nazi Germany, Churchill oversaw
some of the most important events the world has ever seen. Winning
the Nobel Prize in Literature for his personal writing and
cautioning against a powerful Soviet Russia in his later years in
office, his larger-than-life and complex personality has continued
to fascinate writers and historians. In this comprehensive
biography, Roy Jenkins faithfully presents these events, while also
managing to convey the contradictions and quirks in Churchill's
character. Weaving together in-depth analysis and brilliant
historical research, Jenkins has succeeded in crafting this
magnificent one-volume account packed with insights that only a
fellow politician can convey. Bringing to life the statesman,
writer, speaker and leader, Churchill is packed with insights into
one of the most important figures of the twentieth century.

Ike Hebert is a teenager with a dream: to become a champion
motocross racer. But there are many obstacles to achieving it. He
comes from a poor, single parent family, he has learning and social
disabilities, and has no freinds or resources. In the last book,
however, he teamed up with an experienced motocross racer who moved
into his neighborhood from California, the beautiful Samantha
Abernathy. He was also befriended by an outcast junkyard dealer,
Victor Gonzales, who helped him restore a couple of old dirt bikes
for use. Together they solved a crime that caused jealousy among
the other students at Calais High, making them outcasts. In
Pursuing the Dream, Ike and Sam team up again with Mr. Gonzales and
his new mechanic, "Crip" Simon, a crippled war veteran who brings
some tough love to rejuvanate Ike's dream and solve another crime.
This time it's swamp pirates who are trying to take over Crip's
Indian reservation. Join the crew as they solve the mystery,
overcome many setbacks, overcome a tragedy, and rise to the next
level in mx racing. They'll also learn lessons about hard work,
faith, courage and love. You'll be inspired, educated and
entertained as you get a glimpse into the history of south
Louisiana and the world of amateur motocross racing.
Ike Hebert has a dream, to become a champion motocross racer. But
he has many obstacles to overcome. He is being raised by a single
Mom, with little resources; he has no money, no motorcycles, no
friends, and is failing 9th grade. Then he meets Mr. Gonzales, an
outcast junkyard dealer who has some very old dirt bikes. The two
team up to build the bikes, and Ike fans the flame of his dream
into reality. But all is threatened when Ike discovers Mr.
Gonzales' secret from his past and gets caught up in a crime that
will kill his dream. Join Ike as he rediscovers motivation to
succeed in school, gets his first job, overcomes bullying, solves a
crime and moves his dream into reality. You'll get an inside look
at the culture of south Louisiana, amateur motocross racing and the
importance that mentors play in the lives of teenagers. This is the
first book in the Dirt Bike Ike trilogy.
