Using Guided Imagery and Hypnosis in Brief Therapy and Palliative
Care presents a model for effective single-session therapy.
Chapters include more than a dozen case studies with transcripts
and commentary. Readers will learn how to use an adapted model of
Remen's healing circle for preparing patients for surgery, and
guided imagery and other approaches are presented for enhancing
palliative care. Extensive appendixes provide a wide variety of
valuable tools that psychotherapists can use with clients concerned
with end-of-life issues.

The aim of this book is to develop the concepts and relations
pertinent to the solution of many thermodynamic problems
encountered in multi-phase, multi-component systems. In doing so,
it emphasizes a comprehension and development of general
expressions for solving such problems, rather than ready-made
equations for particular applications. Throughout the book, the
methods of Gibbs are used with emphasis on the chemical potential.
Many topics omitted in more elementary texts are amply discussed
defining the state of a thermodynamic system, particularly the
indifferent systems; the use of the Gibbs-Duhem equation in
single-phase and multi-phase component systems; the conditions of
stability for single-phase and multi-phase component systems; and
the graphical representation of the thermodynamic functions.
Special attention is given to reference and standard states. The
material is presented in a rigorous and mathematical manner, and SI
units are used throughout. A detailed bibliography is also
included. Thermodynamics of Chemical Systems is intended for all
those concerned with the application of thermodynamics to chemical
systems, including biochemists, metallurgists, physicists, and
materials scientists as well as chemists. Research workers and
graduate students in these areas will find this work to be a
valuable textbook and reference book.

This is an oral history of the lives of two psychotherapists,
Howard H. Fink and Rubin Battino. Dr. Fink started his career at
the beginnings of psychotherapy in this country in the 1950s. He
trained with exceptional people like Milton H. Erickson and Fritz
Perls. He was one of the developers of Gestalt Therapy and Group
Therapy. The oral history includes his training, his service in
World War II, and his private practice in Dayton, Ohio. He is a
Fellow of the American Academy of Psychotherapy. Battino is a
licensed clinical counselor who has written 8 books on
psychotherapy. He is also a Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. Their
life stories and shared conversations will be of interest to anyone
working in the field of psychotherapy. The book is an oral history
of sessions taped over a 7 year period.
This unique, practical and accessible healing manual explores the
most powerful methods of healing, primarily focusing on guided
imagery, a healing technique that fully exploits the connection
between mind and body. In addition, it encourages a multi-modal
approach to healing through an analysis of other techniques,
including psychotherapy-based methods and alternative therapies. It
presents a breakdown of published guided imagery scripts, while
investigating the most effective methods in inducing a state of
relaxation. Also included in this volume is an invaluable section
on preparing patients for surgery, as well as chapters on Nutrition
and Healing, by nutrition expert A. Ira Fritz PhD, and a chapter on
Native American Healing Traditions, by healer Helena Sheehan PhD.
This immensely powerful and practical book is about utilising the
power of expectation in working with clients. It is the author's
contention that creating an environment where the client expects to
change is the foundation of doing effective very brief therapy. His
own private practice is one where he rarely sees clients more than
one or two times. Clients know in advance that this is the way that
he works, and so their expectation is that during this session they
are going to get down to the hard stuff, and resolve their concerns
insofar as it is possible. This means working as if each session
were the last one. This book is about all of the things that are
designed to work in a single-session mode. This is not to say that
some clients will need many more sessions but creating the
expectation that each session will be the last creates an impetus
towards change that is vital in the therapeutic process. After
presenting the basic outline of this approach, the book details
(chapter by chapter) the specific approaches that the author finds
most useful in his work. These include Ericksonian hypnosis and
psychotherapy, solution-focused brief therapy, reframing, Rossi's
fail-safe methods, and ideomotor signalling. In addition, metaphor,
guided metaphor, and narrative therapy are utilized, as well as
many other methods. Battino has put in one place a collection of
rapid and effective approaches to doing therapy. The emphasis is on
the expectation of both the client and the therapist that rapid,
lasting change is possible.
Psychiatrist and neurologist, Viktor E. Frankl, was the founder of
Logotherapy, the third Viennese school of psychiatry, concerned
with helping people find meaning in their lives. "Meaning" is a
biography in play form. Using many of his own words, the play
focuses on key moments in Frankl's life: it explores his
experiences in a Nazi concentration camp, his development of
Logotherapy and his insights into the human condition. His book
"Man's Search for Meaning" has influenced millions of people
worldwide. Richly illustrated with photographs of Frankl's life and
times, including both painful images of imprisonment in the camps
and joyful family portraits, "Meaning" presents this extraordinary
man's life in a dramatic and readable style. It will appeal to
those familiar with Frankl's work, and inspire new readers to learn
more about this remarkable man and his contribution to the cause of
humanity. "'Meaning' brings Frankl to life in full dimension - his
spirit, determination, wisdom, and integrity." - Jeffrey K. Zeig
PhD, Director, The Milton H. Erickson Foundation.
How do you cope with a life-challenging disease? How you do respond
can have a profound effect on the physical course of the illness.
There is a healing power in hope, and a destructive power in
despair. Attitude matters. Some people seem to be naturally better
at creating the right attitude, but we can all learn to improve our
coping skills. This book is a practical compendium for those living
with or dealing with with life-challenging diseases. Detailing the
many ways of coping that Professor Rubin Battino has learnt during
his extensive professional experience - from friends and support
groups, from research and from practice - it is written to be
thoroughly accessible and informative, as it explores a wide range
of techniques and methods that have proved to have a healing
influence. These include: guided imagery, alternative medicine,
relaxation methods, including Jackobson's Progressive Relaxation
technique, meditation, support groups, structured writing, art
therapy, and nutrition.
