Methods of Psychological Intervention provides a rich collection of
chapters that provide an invaluable resource to scholars,
researchers and practitioners in psychology. Psychological
interventions are becoming increasingly popular in contemporary
societies. This volume is intended to help psychologists and other
professionals understand how general psychological knowledge can
serve to guide local and particular interventions. The present
volume helps bridge the gap between general knowledge in the
psychological sciences and particular instances of human behavior
as it takes place in everyday life. The volume forms part of the
series Yearbook of Idiographic Science. Authors draw on principles
of idiographic science to formulate interventions applicable to a
broad diversity of settings and institutions, such as educational
settings, organizations, and medical settings. It similarly deals
with various psychological behaviours targeted for intervention,
such as gambling, family therapy, and crime. The volume will be of
interest to scholars, researchers and practitioners working in the
fields of psychology, social work, counseling, family therapy,
education, organizational behavior & criminal justice.
The setting is New York City in 1963 where the protagonist, Victor
Mancuso, is a prominent lawyer. His good friend and client, Alex
Reinmann has been kidnapped in Italy. In Rome, during the Nazi
occupation in June of 1944, the kidnappers served as freedom
fighters with Alex, who had been a secret operative with the OSS, a
United States intelligence agency. On the day of Rome's liberation,
Alex confiscated from the fleeing fascists a supply of diamonds and
other jewels, and buried them in the countryside outside of Rome.
He reported this incident to his fellow partisans who would become
his kidnappers years later. The kidnappers believed that Alex could
lead them to the buried fortune. But after questioning Alex at
length about the location of the fortune, the kidnappers finally
decided he truthfully did not know its whereabouts. Fearing
prosecution for kidnapping if they released Alex, they decided to
kill him. The plot was foiled when Alex was rescued by a
combination of the Italian Military PoliceCthe Carabinieri, headed
by the beautiful Sergeant Regina GraziellaCand a group of American
private detectives led by Victor. After the rescue, a congressional
committee in the United States, as well as certain indignant
members of the Carabinieri, alleged that Alex was lying under oath
when he denied ever recovering the jewels. A resulting indictment
of Alex for perjury took place in New York. Victor volunteered to
represent Alex at trial to clear the name of his client and close
friend.
This volume describes the most recent findings on the structure of
ILs interpreted through cutting-edge experimental and theoretical
methods. Research in the field of ionic liquids (ILs) keeps a fast
and steady pace. Since these new-generation molten salts first
appeared in the chemistry and physics landscape, a large number of
new compounds has been synthesized. Most of them display unexpected
behaviour and possess stunning properties. The coverage in this
book ranges from the mesoscopic structure of ILs to their
interaction with proteins. The reader will learn how diffraction
techniques (small and large angle X-Ray and neutron scattering,
powder methods), X-Ray absorption spectroscopies (EXAFS/XANES),
optical methods (IR, RAMAN), NMR and calorimetric methods can help
the study of ILs, both as neat liquids and in mixtures with other
compounds. It will enable the reader to choose the best method to
suit their experimental needs. A detailed survey of theoretical
methods, both quantum-chemical and classical, and of their
predictive power will accompany the exposition of experimental
ones. This book is a must read for postgraduate students, for
post-docs, and for researchers who are interested in understanding
the structural properties of ILs.

Reflexivity is a category that is too appealing not to arouse
interest. It is a concept largely diffused in several psychological
domains, as well as associated with epistemological, theoretical,
methodological and practical discussions. At the same time, it is a
very polysemic notion, understood and used in many different ways.
If one approaches the notion and tries to identify the semantic
boundaries of its usage, the seeming solidity of the term fades
away, and a rather liquid semantic field emerges - a field where
several interpretations coexist, being contingent to the context of
the discussion in which they are implemented. This is the reason
that makes the notion of reflexivity a prototypical example of the
difficulties encountered by Psychology - and more in general social
sciences -in the effort to define their own language. The term
"reflexivity" ? like many others the language of Psychology is full
of - is used in daily life and thus its semantics is shaped by the
pragmatic, contingent functions it serves in such communicational
circumstances. The apparent - from afar ? clearness of the concept
does not concern its conceptual, epistemic status, but the capacity
of the sign to contribute efficaciously to mediate and regulate the
exchange. The theoretical elaboration of the notion of reflexivity
can be seen as one of the ways of performing the challenging task
of developing an intentional language for Psychology. By working on
such a notion one can realize that common sense lies at the core of
psychological science and what it means to separate the former from
the latter, so as to pursue the foundational task of developing
Psychology as a theory?driven science.
Over the last decades cell biology and biological chemistry have
increasingly turned their attention to the space between cells and
revealed an elaborate network of macromolecules essential for
structural support, cell adhesion and signaling. This comprehensive
handbook of the extracellular matrix will give an overview of the
current state of knowledge of matrix components (structure and
function), their role in heath and disease (matrix pathobiology)
and new aspects related to pharmacological targeting. It will
provide an introduction to the extracellular matrix and detailed
sections and chapters on: Importance of extracellular matrix in
health and disease Matrix proteoglycans (aggrecan, versican,
perlecan, SLRPs, syndecans, glypicans, serglycin) Matrix
proteinases (remodeling, would healing, regulatory roles in health
and disease, metalloproteinases, cystein proteases, plasmin and
plasminogen activator system) Glycobiology (hyaluronan and sulfated
glycosaminoglycans in cancer, inflammation and metabolic control)
Collagens (supramolecular assembly, proteins binding collagen,
scaffolds, bacterial and mutated collagens, procollagen
proteinases) Cell surface receptors (integrins, syndecans,
mechanical strain and TGFb, CD44 and DDR). Biotechnological and
pharmacological outlook (matrix regulation by growth factors,
hyaluronidases, pathobiology, disease targeting, delivery systems,
EMT and proteomics). "The book Extracellular Matrix: Pathobiology
and Signaling provides a comprehensive and up to date collection of
very relevant topics for understanding the various facets of
extracellular matrix and its interactions with cells in normal
tissue as well as in disease. It represents the current front-line
and will serve as a reference for extracellular matrix and
posttranslational modifications." Dick Heinegard, Department of
Clinical Sciences Lund, Section Rheumatology, Lund University,

This book examines Diderot's and d'Holbach's views on determinism
to illuminate some of the most important debates taking place in
eighteenth-century Europe. Insisting on aspects of Diderot's and
d'Holbach's thought that, to date, have been given scant, if any,
scholarly attention, it proposes to restore both thinkers to their
rightful position in the history of philosophy. The book
problematises Diderot's and d'Holbach's atheism by showing their
philosophy to be deeply rooted in the Christian tradition and
offers a more nuanced and historicised interpretation of the
so-called "Radical Enlightenment", challenging the notions that
this movement can be taken to be a perfectly coherent set of ideas
and that it represents a complete break with "the old". By
examining Diderot's and d'Holbach's works in tandem and without
post-romantic assumptions about originality and single authorship,
it argues that the two philosophers' texts should be taken as the
product of a fascinating collaborative form of philosophical
enquiry that perfectly reflects the sociable nature of intellectual
production during the Enlightenment. The book further proposes a
fresh interpretation of such crucial texts as the Systeme de la
nature and Jacques le fataliste et son maitre and unveils a key web
of concepts that will help researchers to better understand
Enlightenment philosophy and literature as a whole.
This second edition of the original 1990 version of Opinion Writing
seeks to advise judges on how to improve their writing skills in
justifying their decisions. We follow the common law tradition in
stating written reasons for our decisions. The common-law tradition
demands no more than a clear statement of reasons. The judicial
process expects no more. The brief reader and the opinion readers
deserve no less. The ability to write clearly and memorably may or
may not sometimes be a gift granted at birth. Without question, it
can be perfected by studious attention and constant application,
much like a muscle that is strengthened by proper and continuing
exercise. To do this -- the writing and editing and rewriting
required for polished text -- takes time. Time, unfortunately, is
severely rationed these days. Even with the word processors, the
high-speed laser printer and the computer-contained dictionary and
thesaurus, the modem era of the law does not permit the leisurely
pace that our forebears apparently enjoyed. As this book develops
in detail, every opinion should ideally begin with a clear
statement of the flash point of the controversy between the
litigants. Judges must identify precisely where the litigants
differ and tell the reader whether their clash concerns the choice
of the controlling legal precept or the interpretation of an
agreed-upon precept or, if there is no dispute over either, a
statement that the controversy concerns the application of settled
law to settled facts. Having identified these contours, we should
then proceed to resolve the difficulty and explain why one choice,
or one interpretation or given application, is preferred to
another. This discussion explaining the reasons for the decision,
the ratio decidendi, must offer more clarity. There must be more
exposition of analysis and more selective use of precedent. Lawyers
and judges both have an obligation to evaluate the effect of
previous cases and to decide which citations they will authenticate
and which they will consider simple duplicates, which of them are
necessary to the argument and which of them only validate obvious
statements of reason In sum, this how-to book guides judges to
recognize what critics say about our work, and teaches how judicial
opinions can be improved.
It is now widely accepted that transport is becoming increasingly
unsustainable and that strong policy intervention is required to
reduce both the growth in transport demand and the environmental
costs of transport. This book challenges conventional approaches to
transport by moving away from trend based analysis towards the use
of scenarios to identify alternative sustainable transport futures.
It both summaries the development of EU transport policy and
presents a critique. The policy context is widened to include the
global changes taking place in economics, society and technology.
It develops new methodologies for policy making for the next 25
years.
Offering the first comprehensive analysis of touchless
fingerprint-recognition technologies, Touchless Fingerprint
Biometrics gives an overview of the state of the art and describes
relevant industrial applications. It also presents new techniques
to efficiently and effectively implement advanced solutions based
on touchless fingerprinting. The most accurate current biometric
technologies in touch-based fingerprint-recognition systems require
a relatively high level of user cooperation to acquire samples of
the concerned biometric trait. With the potential for reduced
constraints, reduced hardware costs, quicker acquisition time,
wider usability, and increased user acceptability, this book argues
for the potential superiority of touchless biometrics over
touch-based methods. The book considers current problems in
developing high-accuracy touchless recognition technology. It
discusses factors such as shadows, reflections, complex
backgrounds, distortions due to perspective effects, uncontrolled
finger placement, inconstant resolution of the ridge pattern, and
reconstruction and processing of three-dimensional models. The last
section suggests what future work can be done to increase accuracy
in touchless systems, such as intensive studies on extraction and
matching methods and three-dimensional analytical capabilities
within systems. In a world where usability and mobility have
increasing relevance, Touchless Fingerprint Biometrics demonstrates
that touchless technologies are also part of the future. A
presentation of the state of the art, it introduces you to the
field and its immediate future directions.
The potential for energy transformation from geothermal heat is
limitless. For millennia natural sources of this energy, in the
form of thermal springs, have been used by populations for heating,
cooking and bathing. Modern-day usage has been extended to
electricity generation from binary cycle power plants, heat
extraction from geothermal heat pumps and use in greenhouses for
industrial crop growing. Perspectives for Geothermal Energy in
Europe highlights the status of geothermal energy in countries
where natural sources of this energy are available. It concludes
with a presentation of current geothermal policy and regulations
within Europe, and discussion of how this fits in with the EU
Energy and Climate Framework.Suitable for students, academics and
practitioners in the fields of energy studies, geology and the
earth sciences, electrical engineering and environmental economics,
this book is the first comprehensive review of the practicalities
of geothermal extraction and use in Europe.

Intelligence as a Principle of Public Economy offers the best
expression of the life and thought of the nineteenth-century
Italian political economist Carlo Cattaneo. Available here for the
first time in English, this volume showcases pensiero come
principio d'economia publica, Cattaneo's pioneering vision of
economic growth that emphasized the central role of intelligence
and will in economic processes, the value of knowledge and
innovation, and the importance of liberty. This classic of Italian
thought is framed by a long biographical sketch of Cattaneo's life
before, during, and after the Italian Risorgimento and an afterword
that demonstrates the continuing relevance of Cattaneo's social,
political, and economic ideas to today's ongoing debate about the
importance of a free society.

Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC licence. This comprehensive
collection discusses topical issues essential to both scholarship
and policy making in the realm of lifelong learning (LLL) policies
and how far they succeed in supporting young people across their
life courses, rather than one-sidedly fostering human capital for
the economy. Examining specific yet diverse regional and local
contexts across Europe, this book uses original research to
evaluate differences in scope, approach, orientation, and
objectives. It examines the embedding of LLL policies into the
regional economy, the labour market, education and training systems
and the individual life projects of young people, with a focus on
those in situations of near social exclusion.
