David MacKenzie directs this British drama in which a troubled teenager and his father bond in the unusual surroundings of a prison. 19-year-old Eric (Jack O'Connell) has had an extremely difficult childhood. Taken into care after the death of his mother and the sentencing of his father (Ben Mendelsohn), Eric's subsequent struggles with authority are highlighted by the fact that he has been 'starred up' from juvenile prison to the real thing, despite his tender years. Eric is happy with the outcome, though, as it gives him a chance to reconnect with his father and to demonstrate his toughness. However, with certain prison wardens not averse to using extreme violence to enforce order and protect others, Eric may have to tread carefully and pay attention to the calming words of his father if he is to make it out of the facility in one piece.

Nick Moran directs this drama based on the bestselling memoir by Kevin Lewis. Rupert Friend stars as Lewis, who suffers a childhood of poverty, violence and abuse at the hands of his parents (Natascha McElhone and Con O'Neill) before taking up boxing and becoming embroiled with the criminal underworld in his native South London. A serious incident then triggers a major turnaround in his life and Lewis emerges from his unpromising past to become a published writer and happily married family man. Ioan Gruffud and Jodie Whittaker co-star.

Action starring Sean Bean. After returning from a tour of duty in Iraq, former Paratrooper Bryant (Bean) is appalled by what he sees in a country he no longer recognises. Determined to do something about it, he assembles a group of like-minded souls who resolve to restore the balance between right and wrong, good and evil, enforcing justice with a brutality to match that of the once unpunished wrongdoers.

Earning him an Oscar nomination, Willem Dafoe is mesmerising as Vincent van Gogh in At Eternity’s Gate. Covering his time in Arles and Auvers-sur-Oise, we find a complex, troubled soul who is seeking a new visual language, while also struggling to make sense of himself and his connection to those around him, including Paul Gaugain and a confiding priest.

Shot with a painter’s eye, director Julian Schnabel once again shows his talent for working with complex biography and the lives of artists as he did before in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Basquiat.
