Handbook of Return Migration (Hardcover): Russell King, Katie Kuschminder Handbook of Return Migration (Hardcover)
Russell King, Katie Kuschminder
R5,495 Discovery Miles 54 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This authoritative Handbook provides an interdisciplinary appraisal of the field of return migration, advancing concepts and theories and setting an agenda for new debates. Structured into four parts, the Handbook maps the contemporary field of return migration, examining the effects and politicisation of return migration, before moving on to explore the theme of reintegration and the impact of return migration on development in the migrants' countries of origin. Taking an intersectional approach, expert contributors delve into the economics of return migration, deportation, the psychological wellbeing of migrants, student mobility and second-generation 'return' migration. The Handbook opens up new avenues for research, including new theories and conceptualisations of return migration, and articulates key issues that should be considered, both for research and for policy and practice. This Handbook will be a valuable resource for scholars and advanced students interested in migration and human rights. Its use of empirical examples and case studies will also be beneficial for policy-makers seeking an insight into the current issues in return migration.

Sunset Lives - British Retirement Migration to the Mediterranean (Hardcover, First): Russell King, Tony Warnes, Allan Williams Sunset Lives - British Retirement Migration to the Mediterranean (Hardcover, First)
Russell King, Tony Warnes, Allan Williams
R4,042 Discovery Miles 40 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is the first to analyze the phenomenon of international retirement migration, to trace the story of the migrants from their old to their new homes, and to examine the conceptual and policy contexts of this relatively new form of transnational mobility. The Costa del Sol, the Algarve, Tuscany and Malta attract increasing numbers of retirees each year, especially British and other Northern European citizens. This study provides new insights into the motivations of the mainly well-off and well-educated retirees who settle in Southern Europe and how they manage the transition. It demonstrates the roles of international tourism and of living abroad earlier in life in the formation of the ambition to retire abroad, and it describes the dominantly positive consequences of the moves. The challenges of providing health and welfare services for the ageing population are also explored. The book develops fascinating perspectives on new constructions of old age as a period for personal development and positive changes, and on the ways by which Northern European retirees resident in the South are forming a new pan-national European identity. This book will have wide appeal to a range of readerships and its cross-disciplinary nature will make it relevant for courses on sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, tourism and leisure studies, migration studies, gerontology, social and health policy and area studies.

Small Worlds, Global Lives - Islands and Migration (Hardcover): Russell King, John Connell Small Worlds, Global Lives - Islands and Migration (Hardcover)
Russell King, John Connell
R5,362 Discovery Miles 53 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As "small worlds", where resources are often stretched, islands have had an intense experience of migration. For many small islands in a global era, migration represents a dialogue between different places, some urban, some rural. This book examines diverse facets of migration out of and into a variety of islands, from the North Atlantic to the South Pacific. It traces the way in which migration is of crucial importance, for demography, economics, culture, indeed the whole of island life and identity; it contrasts with the reality of emigration and the rhetoric of return. Topics explored include include migration and environmental change, language shifts, remittances, retirement migration, post-colonial identities and islanders on the Internet. The evidence shows that migration emerges our of islanders' needs, but inevitably transforms insular societies, changing values and expectations, yet rarely if ever contributing to a situation where it is no longer necessary.

Return Migration and Psychosocial Wellbeing - Discourses, Policy-Making and Outcomes for Migrants and their Families... Return Migration and Psychosocial Wellbeing - Discourses, Policy-Making and Outcomes for Migrants and their Families (Hardcover)
Zana Vathi, Russell King
R4,281 Discovery Miles 42 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Return migration is a topic of growing interest among academics and policy makers. Nonetheless, issues of psychosocial wellbeing are rarely discussed in its context. Return Migration and Psychosocial Wellbeing problematises the widely-held assumption that return to the country of origin, especially in the context of voluntary migrations, is a psychologically safe process. By exploding the forced-voluntary dichotomy, it analyses the continuum of experiences of return and the effect of time, the factors that affect the return process and associated mobilities, and their multiple links with returned migrants' wellbeing or psychosocial issues. Drawing research encompassing four different continents - Europe, North America, Africa and Asia - to offer a blend of studies, this timely volume contrasts with previous research which is heavily informed by clinical approaches and concepts, as the contributions in this book come from various disciplinary approaches such as sociology, geography, psychology, politics and anthropology. Indeed, this title will appeal to academics, NGOs and policy-makers working on migration and psychosocial wellbeing; and undergraduate and postgraduate students who are interested in the fields of migration, social policy, ethnicity studies, health studies, human geography, sociology and anthropology.

Out of Albania - From Crisis Migration to Social Inclusion in Italy (Paperback): Russell King, Nicola Mai Out of Albania - From Crisis Migration to Social Inclusion in Italy (Paperback)
Russell King, Nicola Mai
R837 Discovery Miles 8 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"I strongly believe that this book will soon become a 'standard reference' in studies of Albanian society, Albanian migration, immigration to Italy (and possibly to Greece)." . Panos Hatziprokopiou

Analysing the dynamics of the post-1990 Albanian migration to Italy, this book is the first major study of one of Europe's newest, most dramatic yet least understood migrations. It takes a close look at migrants' employment, housing and social exclusion in Italy, as well as the process of return migration to Albania. The research described in the book challenges the pervasive stereotype of the "bad Albanian" and, through in-depth fieldwork on Albanian communities in Italy and back in Albania, provides rich insights into the Albanian experience of migration, settlement and return in both their positive and their negative aspects."

Mari-Liis Jakobson, Russell King, Laura Morosanu, Raivo Vetik
R1,567 Discovery Miles 15 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How do migration and integration change when 'crisis becomes normalcy'? This open access book investigates this question in the present context of turbulent times when, instead of dealing with one crisis, migrants, governments and whole societies have to cope within a complex web of multiple unsettling events that create anxieties about migration. Emphasising a plurality of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches, as well as a variety of geographical settings in Europe and beyond, the chapters bring new insights into migrations produced by global political events, national political shifts, economic downturns and the Covid-19 pandemic. Special attention is given to both migrants' experiences and policy outcomes. The result is an impressive rethinking of the concepts and terminology applied to migration and integration, of interest to students, social scientists, and policy-makers.

Ageing, Gender, and Labour Migration (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Aija Lulle, Russell King Ageing, Gender, and Labour Migration (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Aija Lulle, Russell King
R1,765 Discovery Miles 17 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores how the real conditions and subjective conceptions of ageing and well-being are transformed when people move from one country to another. Focusing on ageing female migrants from Latvia in the UK and other European countries, this book is based on fifty life-history interviews with women aged 40s-60s. Empirical chapters concentrate on functional well-being in migration, which includes access to the economic citizenship of work, income, pensions, and accommodation, and on psychosocial well-being, and explores Latvian women's experiences of intimate citizenship in migration. In addition, the authors' research challenges the trope of vulnerability which generally surrounds the framing of older migrants' lives. The study's findings offer policy-makers insights into the realities of ageing working migrants and advocates for a more inclusive transnational citizenship, better working conditions, and ongoing care arrangements for older migrants post-retirement, either abroad or back home.

Young EU Migrants in London in the Transition to Brexit (Hardcover): Aija Lulle, Laura Morosanu, Russell King Young EU Migrants in London in the Transition to Brexit (Hardcover)
Aija Lulle, Laura Morosanu, Russell King
R3,983 Discovery Miles 39 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

London has long been a magnet for migrants, millions of whom have been attracted by its economic, educational and cultural roles as a truly global city. This book examines recent European migration to the London region through the narrated experiences of a large number of younger migrants from 'old' and 'new' EU member states, of varying educational and skill backgrounds. The research opens multiple windows into the lives of young EU migrants from six different countries before and after the 2016 Referendum on 'Brexit'. A key concept which lies at the core of the analysis is the interrelationship between geographical mobility and the youth transition to adulthood. Among the dimensions documented are study and employment trajectories, housing and social inclusion, identity and belonging, and transnational ties. By paying attention to young people's own accounts of their mobile lives, the research pushes the boundaries of traditional understandings of youth transitions and life paths. As an indispensable account of young EU migrants during the Brexit process, the book will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students across the social sciences, especially those interested in migration, youth studies and European studies, as well as researchers and policy-makers.

Counter-Diaspora - The Greek Second Generation Returns "Home" (Hardcover): Anastasia Christou, Russell King Counter-Diaspora - The Greek Second Generation Returns "Home" (Hardcover)
Anastasia Christou, Russell King
R1,762 R1,500 Discovery Miles 15 000 Save R262 (15%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book focuses on the return of the diasporic Greek second generation to Greece, primarily in the first decade of the twenty-first century, and their evolving, often ambivalent, senses of belonging and conceptualizations of "home." Drawing from a large-scale research project employing a multi-sited and multi-method comparative approach, Counter-Diaspora is a narrative ethnographic account of the lives and identities of second-generation Greek-Americans and Greek-Germans. Through an interdisciplinary gender and generational lens, the study examines lived migration experiences at three diasporic moments: growing up within the Greek diasporic setting in the United States and Germany; motivations for the counter-diasporic return; and experiences in the "homeland" of Greece. Research documents and analyzes a range of feelings and experiences associated with this "counter-diasporic" return to the ancestral homeland. Images and imaginations of the "homeland" are discussed and deconstructed, along with notions of "Greekness" mediated through diasporic encounters. Using extensive extracts from interviews, the authors explore the roles of, among other things, family solidarity, kinship, food, language, and religion, as well as the impact of "home-coming" visits on the decision to return to the ancestral "homeland." The book also contributes to a reconceptualization of diaspora and a problematization of the notion of "second generation."

Migration, Transnationalism and Development in South-East Europe and the Black Sea Region (Paperback): Russell King, Maja... Migration, Transnationalism and Development in South-East Europe and the Black Sea Region (Paperback)
Russell King, Maja Povrzanovic Frykman, Julie Vullnetari
R1,351 Discovery Miles 13 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Southeast Europe and Black Sea region presents fertile terrain for examining recent international migration trends. The contributions to this book cover a range of examples, from Ukraine and Moldova in the north, to Greece and Albania in the south. By intersecting the three key concepts of migration, transnationalism and development, they offer new insights based on original empirical research. A wide range of types of migration can be observed in this region: large-scale emigration in many countries, recent mass immigration in the case of Greece, return migration, internal migration, internal and external forced migration, irregular migration, brain drain etc. These migratory phenomena occur within the context of EU migration policies and EU accession for some countries. Yet within this shifting migration landscape of migrant stocks and flows, the fundamental economic geography of different wealth levels and work opportunities is what drives most migration, now as in the past. This book was previously published as a special issue of Southeast European and Black Sea Studies.

Particular emphasis is placed on the interaction between society and environment in terms of environmental management, differential regional development and its associated political, demographic, cultural and economic tensions.

Russell King, Anastasia Christou, Peggy Levitt
R3,839 R3,186 Discovery Miles 31 860 Save R653 (17%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book examines return mobilities to and from ancestral homelands of the second generation and beyond. It presents cutting-edge empirical research framed within the mobilities, transnational and return migration/diaspora paradigms on a trans/local and global scale. The book is unique in presenting not only a variety of return movements, including short-term visits and longer-term return migrations, but also circulatory movements within transnational social fields while engaging with notions of 'home', belonging, identity and generation. The individual contributions range widely over different ethnic, national, regional and global settings, including Europe, North America, the Caribbean, the Gulf and Africa. The result is a remapping of the conceptualisation of 'diaspora' and of the role of successive generations in the diasporic experience, as well as a nuancing of the concepts of return migration and transnationalism by their extension to the second and subsequent generations of 'immigrants'. This book was originally published as a special issue of Mobilities.

Writing Across Worlds - Literature and Migration (Paperback, New): John Connell, Russell King, Paul White Writing Across Worlds - Literature and Migration (Paperback, New)
John Connell, Russell King, Paul White
R1,684 Discovery Miles 16 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Writing has always been a means of making crossings and forging connections between different worlds. Some writers have found it hard to reach an international audience, however: for decades the western literary establishment has been all too ready to sideline writers with mixed cultural or migrant backgrounds as 'marginal', 'multicultural' or simply 'other'. Since its foundation in 1984 the literary magazine Wasafiri has focused on the idea of the writer as someone who transports the imagination beyond the maps of narrowly defined borders, and has promoted a range of new and established voices as well as signposting new waves in contemporary literature worldwide.
To celebrate Wasafiri's twentieth anniversary, Writing Across Worlds brings together a selection of interviews with major international writers previously featured in the pages of the magazine. Conducted by a wide constituency of distinguished critics, writers and journalists, the interviews offer a unique insight into the views and work of aremarkable array of acclaimed authors. They also chart a slow but certain cultural shift: those once seen as 'other' have not only won many of the establishment's most revered literary prizes but have also become central figures in contemporary literature, writing across and into all our real and imagined worlds.
With an introductory comment by Susheila Nasta, editor of Wasafiri, this collection is essential reading for all those interested in contemporary literature.
