for fans of Rosie Clarke and Annie Groves. In the midst of World
War II, the members of one village WI fight harder than ever to

a more personal battle. Pat Simms is reeling from her own role in
her abusive husband's death, and the new freedom before her is
daunting. Sarah Collingborne is struggling with the absence of her
husband, who is stranded in a POW camp abroad, and trying her best
to fill his treasured place in the village. Meanwhile, Teresa Lucas
is anxious about her future as a parent, and her friend Alison
Scotlock is on the verge of starting a new relationship. And Miriam
Brindsley's good luck might be about to change . . . Grieving for
men already lost and anxious for those still away fighting, the
women of Great Paxford must rely on each other. Amidst the
complexities of broken relationships, loss and friendship, this
group of very different women must work together to find a way
through.
This comprehensive annotated bibliography reviews nearly 500
English-language studies published between 1915 and 2001 that
examine the depiction of ethnic, racial, and national groups as
portrayed in United States feature films from the inception of
cinema through the present. Coverage includes books, reference
works, book chapters within larger works, and individual essays
from collections and anthologies. Concise annotations provide
content summaries; unique features; major films and filmmakers
discussed; and useful information on related titles, purpose, and
intended readership. The studies included range from specialized
scholarly treatises to popular illustrated books for general
readers, making DEGREESIProjecting Ethnicity and Race DEGREESR an
invaluable resource for researchers interested in ethnic and racial
film imagery.
Entries are arranged alphabetically by title for easy access,
while four separate indexes make the work simple to navigate by
author, subject, gender, race, ethnic group, nationality, country,
religion, film title, filmmaker, performer, or theme. Although the
majority of studies published examine images of African Americans,
Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Asians
in film, the volume contains studies of groups including Africans,
Arabs, the British, Canadians, South Sea Islanders, Tibetans,
Buddhists, and Muslims--making it a unique reference book with a
wide range of uses for a wide range of scholars.
This is the first book to examine how Fulbright
scholars-individuals almost certain to be movers and shakers in
their own countries, if they weren't already before coming to
America-from Iraq and Afghanistan view the U.S. interventions in
their countries, the war on terror, the status of Islam, and other
pressing issues of our day. As the author explains, understanding
the mindset of Afghans and Iraqis willing to live and study in the
occupying power is crucial to the conduct of America's war on
terror and America's role in the post-President Bush world. In this
work Block looks in-depth at a large representative sample of the
Iraqi and Afghani Fulbright scholars in the United States,
providing information about their former lives in their home
countries, their opposition to dictatorial (Taliban and SaddaM's)
rule, their accounts of how they wound up coming to America, their
opinions about America (both positive and negative), their views of
jihadism and of the proper place for Islam in the political
processes of their respective countries, and their expectations
about what might await them when they return to their own
countries. As such, it will be an invaluable resource as the United
States continues to rebuild Afghanistan and Iraq.

The behaviour under iteration of unimodal maps of an interval, such
as the logistic map, has recently attracted considerable attention.
It is not so widely known that a substantial theory has by now been
built up for arbitrary continuous maps of an interval. The purpose
of the book is to give a clear account of this subject, with
complete proofs of many strong, general properties. In a number of
cases these have previously been difficult of access. The analogous
theory for maps of a circle is also surveyed. Although most of the
results were unknown thirty years ago, the book will be
intelligible to anyone who has mastered a first course in real
analysis. Thus the book will be of use not only to students and
researchers, but will also provide mathematicians generally with an
understanding of how simple systems can exhibit chaotic behaviour.
Sudoku has become a vastly popular and even addictive game. But
fans may not know that Sudoku is a recent offshoot of the venerable
Magic Square, which dates back over 4,000 years to ancient China,
where it was literally considered magical. Indeed, Magic Squares
have fascinated centuries of mystics, astrologers, and some of the
world's most brilliant thinkers, including Ben Franklin. In Sudoku
and Magic Squares, Seymour Block and Santiago Tavares offer a
crystal clear and engaging tour tour of Magic Squares, tracing
their footsteps through through ancient and medieval history and
illuminating their uses in art and design, statistics and
electronics. The book provides a delightful account of a
mind-boggling variety of magical squares, ranging from simple 3 x 3
and squares, to magic cubes, magic circles, magic pyramids, and
even "the Beastly Magical Square," whose magic sum is 666. Of
course, the authors also cover Sudoku, describing how the game
became a world-wide phenomenon and revealing various strategies for
solving the puzzles. And along the way, the book offers readers
many fascinating facts-for instance, Sudoku was invented in 1979 by
an American architect living in Indianapolis and was originally
called Number Place. Oddly enough, though the puzzle is known
around the world by its Japanese name (which means "single
numbers"), many Japanese still call it Number Place. We also learn
that in a 4 x 4 magic square, there are 880 different solutions
that will yield the magic sum of 34-a surprisingly large number
until you remember that there are over 2.6 trillion possible
combinations. Filled with lots of original puzzles for gamers to
solve, Sudoku and Magic Squares is an entertaining book that will
delight anyone who loves a challenge, including all fans of Sudoku.
