Thema des Buches ist die Geschichte des Innovationssystems in Deutschland seit Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts. Die Autoren stellen die Entwicklung der Wissenschaftsausgaben in diesem Zeitraum zusammen und rekonstruieren daraus den Anteil fur Forschung und Entwicklung. Anhand von Publikations- und Patentstatistiken wird nachgewiesen, dass die Wissenschaftstatigkeit im gesamten Betrachtungszeitraum mit konstanter Rate gewachsen ist, wohingegen die Phase der exponentiellen Ausdehnung der Erfindungstatigkeit, die im Wesentlichen in den Unternehmen stattfindet, vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg bereits abgeschlossen war. Als Beispiele werden detailliert die Chemie- und die Elektroindustrie untersucht. Die aufschlussreiche Untersuchung kann auch als Nachschlagewerk fur die Wirtschaftsgeschichte Deutschlands seit der Reichsgrundung verwendet werden.
