In early modern English medicine, the balance of fluids in the body was seen as the key to health. Menstruation was widely believed to regulate the blood level in the female body and so was extensively discussed in medical texts. In this book, Sara Read examines all forms of literature, from plays and poems, to life-writing, and compares these texts with the medical theories. Many of these literary representations show how early modern English women related to their bleeding bodies, both in their menstrual cycles and at other times of transition, from menarche to menopause. For example, how would a literate woman read about her body in the books which claimed to be guides for female health? How was menstruation presented to society in staged and printed works? As part of its attempt to recover the ways in which a woman in this era might have understood this aspect of her physiology, this book examines the key moments when menstruation and related changes were at the forefront of her experience of living in a female body.

CONGENITAL AND PERINATAL INFECTIONS provides a concise and clinically-oriented primer on the congenital and perinatal infections likely to present in clinical practice. Written with the busy clinician in mind, it combines easy accessibility with state-of-the-art information on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of congenital and perinatal infections. Eschewing the notion that congenital and perinatal infections only encompass agents from the TORCH group of pathogens, this volume offers comprehensive information on the spectrum of viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections that can manifest in mother or child. Combined with its brevity and emphasis on clinical management, CONGENITAL AND PERINATAL INFECTIONS is a definitive new guide to understanding this challenging group of infections.
This volume presents the proceedings of the 14th International Workshop of Groupware (CRIWG 2008). The conference was held in Omaha, Nebraska, USA during September 14-18, 2008. Previous conferences were held in Argentina (Bariloche) in 2007, Spain (Medina del Campo) in 2006, Brazil (Porto de Galinhas) in 2005, Costa Rica (San Carlos) in 2004, France (Autrans) in 2003, Chile (La Serena) in 2002, Germany (Darmstadt) in 2001, Portugal (Madeira) in 2000, Mexico (Cancun) in 1999, Brazil (Buzios) in 1998, Spain (El Escorial) in 1997, Chile (Puerto Varas) in 1996, and Portugal (Lisbon) in 1995. The CRIWG workshops seek to advance theoretical, experimental, and applied te- nical knowledge of computer supported collaboration. In the CRIWG workshops, - searchers and professionals report findings, exchange experiences, and explore concepts for improving the success of people making a joint effort toward a group goal. Topics of discussion are wide ranging, encompassing all aspects of design development, depl- ment, and use of groupware. CRIWG embraces both mature works that are nearly ready for publication in peer-review journals, and new, cutting-edge works in progress. A total of 30 papers were accepted for presentation this year - 20 full papers and 10 works in progress. Papers were subjected to double-blind review by at least three members of the Program Committee.
This portable and practical handbook, first published in 2006, provides a concise guide to the essentials of pediatric HIV care in a form suitable for doctors in the busy hospital setting. During recent years, many agents for the treatment and prophylaxis of HIV infection and the opportunistic infections that accompany HIV infection have been developed, and many new ways of monitoring HIV infection in children have been produced. These therapies and approaches to management are complicated, but the long-term health of HIV-infected children depends on their correct application. This handbook presents the core information and guidelines necessary for effective management of infected children. Two other important themes are ways to minimise mother-to-infant transmission, and the challenges of looking after these children in resource-poor countries.
Bos and Read present here two medieval treatises on concepts. These treatises were first unearthed by one of the editors in the course of a different project, namely the search for the origins of the notion of 'suppositio collectiva'. They appear to have attracted no attention since the middle of the fifteenth century. These are two of only three medieval treatises known to the editors explicitly devoted to discussion of concepts. That is not to deny that other works treat extensively of concepts among other matters. In the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries it became increasingly common to devote single treatises to single matters-supposition, consequences, exponibles, obligations and so on. A more famous treatise on concepts is Peter of Ailly's Concepts, given a modern translation by Paul Spade. Peter's treatise was written in Paris in the early 1370s, and printed there and in Lyon several times in the 1490s. Thomas of Cleves' treatise was also written in Paris in the early 1370's, and that of Paul of Gelria some ten years later, if not in Paris then in Prague. Neither has been printed before. To preface the edition of the two texts, the editors provide an introduction discussing the origin of medieval conceptions of concepts and commenting in detail on the content of the two treatises. They also provide some biographical information on the authors and attempt to date and place their texts.
