The Russian school system should have an important role to play in
the process of democratization and the revival and modernization of
the economy in that country. Is it in a position to respond to this
task? In this book an analysis is conducted of the attempts to
reform the Russian school system in the 1990s, setting the progress
made and problems encountered by the schools against the broader
context of political, economical and social flux in Russia as a
whole.
This volume makes a valuable contribution to debates on the nature of civil society in post-communist countries by providing detailed case-studies of the relationship between education and civic culture. A team of specialists provide a comprehensive examination of everyday patterns of civic culture; the linkage between education and national identity, ethnicity; gender and religion; the experience and attitudes of youth; and attempts to render education systems better suited to the demands of post-communist society.
Evidence for the negative effects of segregation and concentrated
poverty in America's cities now exists in abundance; poor and
underrepresented communities in segregated urban housing markets
suffer diminished outcomes in education, economic mobility,
political participation, and physical and psychological health.
Though many of the aggravating factors underlying this inequity
have persisted or even grown worse in recent decades, the level of
energy and attention devoted to them by local and national
policymakers has ebbed significantly from that which inspired the
landmark civil rights legislation of the 1960s. Marking 50 years
since the passage of the Fair Housing and Civil Rights Acts, Facing
Segregation both builds on and departs from two generations of
scholarship on urban development and inequality. Authors provide
historical context for patterns of segregation in the United States
and present arguments for bold new policy actions ranging from
local innovations to national initiatives. The volume refocuses
attention on achievable solutions by providing not only an overview
of this timely subject, but a roadmap forward as the twenty-first
century assesses the successes and failures of the housing policies
inherited from the twentieth. Rather than introducing new theories
or empirical data sets describing the urban landscape, Metzger and
Webber have gathered the field's first collection of prescriptions
for what ought to be done.
The vivid discussion on civil society in Eastern Europe that
flourished during the late 1980s and early 1990s has faded
somewhat, and been partly replaced by new attempts to conceptualise
the nature of social change taking place in these countries. This
book strives to continue and go beyond the civil society discourse
by analysing the interrelationship between education and civic
culture in post-communist countries. The volume offers detailed
case studies, written by specialists from the region and from
Western Europe and North America, examining everyday patterns of
civic culture; the linkage between education and national identity,
ethnicity, gender and religion; the experience and attitudes of
youth; and attempts to render education systems better suited to
the demands of post-communist society.
