Justice - Classical Foundations and Contemporary Debates (Hardcover): Young S. Kim Justice - Classical Foundations and Contemporary Debates (Hardcover)
Young S. Kim
R2,502 Discovery Miles 25 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The moral inquiry into the nature of justice is often marginalized, as contemporary discussions focus primarily on political considerations. Yet, the need to examine the moral framework of justice is fundamental. What is the point of justice, after all, if not to establish a moral framework for political interactions? The question resonates especially when recognizing that no monocultures exist over time and space. In examining Plato's thoughts on individual and social morality (dikaiosune) and Aristotle's focus on individual virtue (arete) and the pursuit of well-being (eudaimonia), the author proffers foundational resources for today's discussions of justice. Moreover, he brings this nexus of thought into conversation with theories that have emerged over the centuries, such as Kant's concept of due concern and respect, individual rights and responsibilities as in Hobbes, Locke and J.S. Mill. Thus, he engages contemporary disputes of justice including distributive vs. relational schemes, choice vs. chance considerations, group rights theories, value pluralism, the right vs. the good, as well as international and future justice. His inquiry concludes with the provision of a deontological framework set against a liberal political context, justice as right actions, for further examination of questions of justice.

Finding His Footprints in the Sand - God's Grace to Women in an Ungracious World (Paperback): Erica S Kim Finding His Footprints in the Sand - God's Grace to Women in an Ungracious World (Paperback)
Erica S Kim
R376 R350 Discovery Miles 3 500 Save R26 (7%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A defining moment. Perhaps you've had one, an experience that explains who you are today. God had a defining moment. His Son died on the cross for our sins, changing history and his relationship with mankind. Still, his forgiveness, love and sacrifice are concepts unfamiliar to much of the world. Ignorant of such grace, society bombards us with the daily temptation to measure up or perform. When we fail to achieve the desired results, we struggle to feel God's grace. This is especially true when life hits us hard through tragedy, unfortunate events and prolonged suffering---we question; we wonder; we misunderstand his amazing grace. This can cause us to battle shame, self-doubt and bitterness. When dark times come, are you able to find strength in God's grace? Do you defeat insecurity, lack of self-worth and guilt through your view of grace? Have you seen your Lord's footprints in the sand when you look back at the most difficult times in your life? Do your struggles and disappointments bring you to a deeper understanding of his grace? In "Footprints in the Sand: God's Grace to Women in an Ungracious World", Erica Kim starts with a defining moment in her personal life---the tragic death of her mother---to describe her journey to rediscover God's grace. Through poignant true-life stories and teachings about women in the Bible, you will be led from the book of Genesis to the cross to see without a doubt how God has carried each one of us in his arms through every dark and hopeless moment to help you to experience fulfillment and spiritual growth.

Justice as Right Actions - An Original Theory of Justice in Conversation with Major Contemporary Accounts (Hardcover): Young S.... Justice as Right Actions - An Original Theory of Justice in Conversation with Major Contemporary Accounts (Hardcover)
Young S. Kim
R2,581 Discovery Miles 25 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Justice as Right Actions presents an original theory of justice anchored in the analytical philosophical tradition. In contrast to many contemporary approaches, the theory provides normative guidance, rather than focusing solely on political structures and institutions, as the question of justice is seen to comprise both a moral inquiry concerned with questions of good and bad, right and wrong, and a political inquiry, concerned with the nature of the polity and how individuals relate to it. Presenting a relational account of justice, rather than a distributive account - the latter, so much more prevalent in current studies - communications are seen as the key to the theory, both in the substantive sense as a discursive method of resolving disputes, as well as instrumentally, in the transmission of concepts, especially values through time. Rule-oriented in approach, justice as right actions attempts to be value-neutral, acknowledging, however, an underlying thin theory of the good, including concepts of rationality, autonomous moral agency, equal concern and respect for others, as well as plurality of values. Its political context is liberalism, with components of negative liberty and equality of concern and respect, while underscoring as well, the concepts of tolerance and social diversity. In this study, the original theory of Justice as Right Actions is also contrasted with and situated among contemporary accounts of justice, including the most important theoretical works on the topic in the past half-century. Thus, the study also serves as a valuable review and critique of such major contemporary accounts of justice.

The STATE, MARKETS AND DEVELOPMENT - Beyond the Neoclassical Dichotomy (Hardcover): Amitava K. Dutt, Kwan S. Kim, Ajit Singh The STATE, MARKETS AND DEVELOPMENT - Beyond the Neoclassical Dichotomy (Hardcover)
Amitava K. Dutt, Kwan S. Kim, Ajit Singh

R3,274 Discovery Miles 32 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Markets and the state are usually seen as opposed to each other as instruments of economic development. This important new book attempts to go beyond the state-market debate, which it sees as largely the intellectual legacy of neoclassical economics, and the related pendulum swings of opinion favouring one against the other. Arguing that development can be hindered and fostered by both the state and markets, the contributing authors suggest that the real challenge is not to choose between them but to find ways in which their virtues can be utilized jointly to further the goals of development. The first part provides some general perspectives which critically analyse mainstream neoclassical views on states and markets while also providing some alternative approaches. The contributors to the second part examine state-market interaction in Latin America, South Korea and India.

North Korea and Northeast Asia (Paperback): Samuel S Kim, Tai Hwan Lee North Korea and Northeast Asia (Paperback)
Samuel S Kim, Tai Hwan Lee; Contributions by Victor D. Cha, C. S. Eliot Kang, Myonwoo Lee, …
R1,373 Discovery Miles 13 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A country of stark contradictions and puzzles, North Korea exhibits uncanny resilience in the face of external shocks and internal woes, raising important questions of theoretical and real-world significance. What has made it possible for North Korea to defy the classical realist axiom, 'The strong do what they have the power to do and the weak accept what they have to accept'? What is the nature of the North Korean threat in post-Cold War Northeast Asia? What kind of bargaining leverage does Pyongyang exercise in system-maintaining survival strategies? What are North Korea's prospects for sustaining such survival strategies in the uncertain years ahead? This volume offers a major reappraisal of the changing relationship between North Korea and its neighboring powers in the post-Cold War era in both theoretical and practical terms. The contributors examine the complex interplay of global, regional, and national forces that have influenced and shaped the changing patterns of conflict and cooperation in North Korea's relationships with China, Russia, and Japan and with the United States. Within the context of Northeast Asian geopolitics, the book tracks, explains, and assesses North Korea's survival strategies in both the security and economic domains, as well as the prospects of these strategies in the coming years.

The Quest For A Just World Order (Hardcover): Samuel S Kim The Quest For A Just World Order (Hardcover)
Samuel S Kim
R4,177 Discovery Miles 41 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In response to a growing sense of dissatisfaction with the state of the world and the state of international relations research, Professor Kim has taken an alternative approach to the study of contemporary world politics. Specifically, he has adopted and expanded the cross-cultural, interdisciplinary, and transnational approach developed by the World Order Models Project (WOMP), an enterprise committed to the realization of peace, economic equality and well-being, social justice, and ecological balance. Systemic in scope and interdisciplinary in methodology, The Quest for a Just World Order explains and projects the issues, patterns, and trends of world politics, giving special attention to the attitudinal, normative, behavioral, and institutional problems involved in the politics of system transformation. Professor Kim also attempts to remedy a number of problematic features of traditional approaches, including a value-neutral orientation; fragmentation and overspecialization; overemphasis on national actors, the superpowers, and stability; and the Hobbesian image of world politics. Part 1 presents a conceptual framework for developing a normative theory of world order. Each of the four chapters in Part 2 examines a specific global crisis in depth, working within the framework laid out in Part 1. In Part 3 a variety of desirable and feasible transition strategies are proposed, and Professor Kim assesses the prospects for achieving a just and humane world order system by the end of this century.

Charles K Armstrong, Gilbert Rozman, Samuel S Kim, Stephen Kotkin
R4,161 Discovery Miles 41 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The common images of Korea view the peninsula as a long-standing battleground for outside powers and the Cold War's last divided state. But, Korea's location at the very center of Northeast Asia gives it a pivotal role in the economic integration of the region and the dynamic development of its more powerful neighbors. A great wave of economic expansion, driven first by the Japanese miracle and then by the ascent of China, has made South Korea - an economic powerhouse in its own right - the hub of the region once again, a natural corridor for railroads and energy pipelines linking Asiatic Russia to China and Japan. And, over the horizon, an opening of North Korea, with multilateral support, would add another major push toward regional integration. Illuminating the role of the Korean peninsula in three modern historical periods, the eminent international contributors to this volume offer a fresh and stimulating appraisal of Korea as the key to the coalescence of a broad, open Northeast Asian regionalism in the twenty-fifth century.

The International Relations of Northeast Asia (Paperback, New): Samuel S Kim The International Relations of Northeast Asia (Paperback, New)
Samuel S Kim; Contributions by Thomas Berger, Kent E. Calder, Lowell Dittmer, William W. Grimes, …
R1,390 Discovery Miles 13 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is Northeast Asia primed for peace or ripe for great-power rivalry? In this turbulent region, all the world-order challenges of arms control and disarmament, global North-South tensions, human rights and humanitarian intervention, environmental protection and eco-development, and democratization and humane governance are concentrated. More than any other part of the world, the divided Korean peninsula is the strategic crossroad where the four major regional/global powers-the United States, Russia, China, and Japan-uneasily interact. This authoritative work explores the complex and evolving interplay of national, regional, and global forces influencing Northeast Asia's security, economy, and identity. Written by a team of leading scholars, the book presents a variety of theoretical perspectives and case studies to offer a comprehensive analysis of the pressures that shape the policy choices of China, Russia, Japan, the United States, North and South Korea, and Taiwan. The authors' historically and culturally informed narratives help track and explain the changes and continuities of relationships within the region and with the United States and Russia. Concise and current, this book will be essential reading for all those concerned with the role of a changing Northeast Asia in world politics.

East Asia and Globalization (Hardcover): Samuel S Kim East Asia and Globalization (Hardcover)
Samuel S Kim; Contributions by Lowell Dittmer, Barry K. Gills, Dong-Sook S. Gills, William W. Grimes, …
R3,600 Discovery Miles 36 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This clear and timely book presents the first sustained and structured analysis of globalization in the East Asian context, exploring the strategies used by East Asian countries to cope with the forces of globalization. Eschewing both neoliberal "hyperglobalization" chants and neorealist "globaloney" castigation, the authors integrate a broad conceptual framework with region- and country-specific case studies. Specifically, the book poses and addresses three major questions about East Asia's globalization. First, it identifies the range of contending conceptualizations of globalization that have underpinned the region's changing and contradictory views in the 1990s. Second, the book critically probes the discrepancy between promise and performance-the myths and realities-of East Asian globalization and the complex interaction of challenges and responses. Third, the authors evaluates the impacts and consequences of globalization for East Asia's political, economic, social, cultural, ecological, and security development. These questions clarify the often-murky nature, challenges, responses, and consequences of globalization, especially in light of the Asian financial crisis and moves toward recovery.

The concept of phase space plays a decisive role in the study of the transition from classical to quantum physics. This is particularly the case in areas such as nonlinear dynamics and chaos, geometric quantization and the study of the various semi-classical theories, which are the setting of the present volume. Much of the content is devoted to the study of the Wigner distribution. This volume gives the first complete survey of the progress made by both mathematicians and physicists. It will serve as an excellent reference for further research.

Empires of Vice - The Rise of Opium Prohibition across Southeast Asia (Hardcover): Diana S. Kim Empires of Vice - The Rise of Opium Prohibition across Southeast Asia (Hardcover)
Diana S. Kim
R904 Discovery Miles 9 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A history of opium's dramatic fall from favor in colonial Southeast Asia During the late nineteenth century, opium was integral to European colonial rule in Southeast Asia. The taxation of opium was a major source of revenue for British and French colonizers, who also derived moral authority from imposing a tax on a peculiar vice of their non-European subjects. Yet between the 1890s and the 1940s, colonial states began to ban opium, upsetting the very foundations of overseas rule-how did this happen? Empires of Vice traces the history of this dramatic reversal, revealing the colonial legacies that set the stage for the region's drug problems today. Diana Kim challenges the conventional wisdom about opium prohibition-that it came about because doctors awoke to the dangers of drug addiction or that it was a response to moral crusaders-uncovering a more complex story deep within the colonial bureaucracy. Drawing on a wealth of archival evidence across Southeast Asia and Europe, she shows how prohibition was made possible by the pivotal contributions of seemingly weak bureaucratic officials. Comparing British and French experiences across today's Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam, Kim examines how the everyday work of local administrators delegitimized the taxing of opium, which in turn made major anti-opium reforms possible. Empires of Vice reveals the inner life of colonial bureaucracy, illuminating how European rulers reconfigured their opium-entangled foundations of governance and shaped Southeast Asia's political economy of illicit drugs and the punitive state.
