This book is about adoption, prejudice and the ravages of war. It
is about one woman's successful battle against prejudice which made
it possible for her to save one precious life. It is about a little
boy who managed to survive the ravages of war and travel half way
across the world to a loving family in America. It is about the
compassion and concern of a young teen age boy who cared so much
about others in need that he agreed to accept a child he'd never
met as part of his family. This book is about the tragic and deadly
affects of war on both civilians and warriors living in the midst
of the battle ground and on other warriors' loved ones who are
living thousands of miles away from the battle ground. It is about
veterans who form organizations that help needy veterans/former
warriors and their families in this country as well as those living
in the former battle ground. It is about organizations that fight
hard to prevent more wars. Unfortunately, the battle against wars
has yet to be won. Finally, this book is about compassion,
compassion in action. Many thanks to friends Ann Drozda and Vietnam
veteran Larry E. McGinnis for their awesome illustrations.
"...The Japanese are not so black as they are painted or so
immaculate as they occasionally paint themselves." As the author's
own words suggest, this book attempts to give a balanced account of
Japan during the "crisis" years of 1931-1935 which were some of the
most significant in modern Japanese history. They saw an act of
political expansion unique in the years following World War One, as
well as an expansion of Japanese foreign trade in markets hitherto
dominated by the exports of other countries. The letters re-issued
here were written for both the Western and Japanese reader and as
such represent an unrivalled impartial resource.
Middle East oil and Anglo-American special relations were among the most contentious issues during the Cold War. Oil is crucial to our understanding of Britain's and the US's Cold War policies in the Middle East. This book presents an in-depth study of the issues of the period and the legacy of oil in the post-Cold war era.
Popular Spanish Film Under Franco is the first book of its kind to
analyze cinematic comedy during the initial two decades of
Francisco Franco's dictatorship. Focusing on the intersection
between popular culture and political populism, it breaks new
theoretical ground in re-evaluating the policies of the regime and
the tactics employed by those who sought to undermine it. Its
cultural studies approach - combining Gramsci, de Certeau and
Bakhtin - interrogates the ambiguous nature of subversion and
challenges common assumptions concerning post-war Spanish film.
First published in 1980. From the earliest beginnings of the
European Economic Community, it was recognised that a common market
for agriculture would be one of the basic prerequisites for
workable economic unity. And yet the Common Agricultural Policy
(CAP) remained a subject of much controversy and debate. The CAP,
more than any other element of European policy, was seen to test
the true depth of the commitment shown by Community members to the
practice as well as the principle of economic integration.
Agriculture and the European Community examines the reasons for the
existence of the CAP and its format. It outlines the main
instruments, price and structural policy, and the changing emphasis
between them. It discusses in turn the effects of the CAP on
producers' income levels and on consumer prices; how far it had
fulfilled the promises of the Treaty of Rome; the implications of
the policy for third country trade; and its place within the
Community as a whole. The study argues that, although incomes of
Community farmers had improved, this is not simply the result of
the CAP, nor was the geographical distribution of benefit in terms
of farming income satisfactory. The policy has achieved a degree of
success in securing food supplies and stabilising prices but the
cost to the consumer has been high. Knowledge of the CAP had become
almost essential to any understanding of modern European affairs.
Agriculture and the European Community will serve as a
straightforward introduction to the policy for students approaching
the subject for the first time, especially in departments of
Agricultural Economics, European Studies and Political Science.
The Third edition of this successful Atlas of Osteoporosis is
designed to provide a wide range of physicians with a pictorial
guide to this important disease. The illustrations are an excellent
teaching resource and the text provides a concise overview to
osteoporosis. For the first time, text and illustrations are fully
integrated. The book contains details of skeletal biology and the
pathophysiology of osteoporosis, with a series of diagrammatic and
SEM illustrations. There is greater emphasis on clinical factors in
this edition, particularly in areas such as nutrition, exercise,
and growth. There are also important sections on diagnosis using
bone densitometry and the laboratory evaluation of bone disorders.

Based on the protocols in use at the highly acclaimed King's College Hospital in London, Clinical Protocols in Labour presents a consensus of the best and most appropriate techniques for standard delivery and uncommon clinical scenarios. Each chapter is written as a stand-alone unit making the information easy to find. Coverage ranges from a general approach to care, normal labour, and care of the baby to specific issues such as eclampsia and pre-eclampsia, uterine rupture, and postpartum bleeding. In addition, the book includes protocols for emergency closure of the labour ward, communication among members of the labour team, and more. A compact, authoritative volume, Clinical Protocols in Labour provides practical templates for the perinatal management of women and their babies during labour and delivery.
Pregnancy complicated by neurological disorders is a challenging
area for both obstetricians and neurologists. Treatment of the
maternal condition often needs to be adjusted because of concerns
for the fetus, and some conditions have a major impact on the
method, mode, and timing of delivery. Many of the clinical problems
that arise in pregnant women with a neurological disease have not
been the subject of clinical trials, so management must often be
based on what published evidence is available and a good
understanding of the likely interactions between the condition and
pregnancy and vice versa. The editors and contributors represent a
team with considerable experience in this area. They offer their
"best practice" advice as how to treat the mother effectively,
ensuring fetal safety, as well as embracing a philosophy that the
pregnancy of a woman with a neurological disease should be made as
enjoyable and rewarding for her as is possible.
Through 'live' material from consulting practice and an historical
review of advice-giving to pre-modern leaders, this book uncovers a
distinctive 'feminine' discourse of management consulting. This new
lens challenges current literature on management consulting that
relies on established (masculine) images.
