The text's distinguished authors have perfected the most frequently performed oculoplastic surgical techniques. Starting with eyelid repair, their atlas is designed to instruct all ophthalmologists who wish to learn these techniques and thus enhance their income. Mastery of these procedures is made easier by following the step-by-step illustrations that are complemented by 22 video clips on 2 CD-ROMs. The study of the supporting anatomy, followed by clear-cut guidelines with heavily-illustrated techniques, offers a format which will allow the learner to gain the necessary understanding for achieving a more favorable result.

Human immunodeficiency virus and AIDS have received much attention
in the last decade. As the major cause of death in young adults,
this concern is merited. AIDS has also ushered onto the clinical
agenda a number of unusual and interesting pathogens. These have
had considerably less attention than the virus itself, but are
arguably as important. This book attempts to put into one volume a
state of the art review of the basic biology of these opportunistic
organisms. When compiling this book, the perceived difficulty was
deciding how to restrict the number of chapters, as there is a
large number of opportunistic organisms. It soon became clear,
however, that the chapters would select themselves, as the work on
many of these organisms was still in its infancy. We can be
criticized for including Salmonella, which is not thought to be an
opportunistic infection, and excluding Cryptococcus. Our defence is
that the former has an interesting relationship with HIV and the
latter is one of those organisms for which the basic biology is
still in its early stages. The authors are all active researchers
in their respective fields and we are grateful that they managed to
review their subjects in the short turn-around time required for a
book such as this not to be needlessly outdated on publication. We
hope that, if nothing else, this book stimulates interest and more
research on these agents: perhaps, in future editions, there will
be much more to describe on their molecular biology.

he desire to teach and the fulfillment attained from teaching T
have again prompted us to produce a work that we hope will be both
useful and enlightening to our readers. The field of oculoplastic
surgery has grown and evolved to include all aspects of eyelid and
facial plastic surgery. Our literature must now reflect the
advancements and direction of our field. Knowledge of anatomy, the
basis of all surgery and the root of surgical princi pIes and
techniques, is the basis of our ability to deli ver the highest
quality care to our patients. We have therefore combined text and
diagrams, and supplemented them with CD-ROM digital video
technology to provide to those who wish to perform this surgery the
best possible instruction and prepa ration. We hope that our
attempts to accomplish this will be rewarded by the use of our
material by our colleagues and the acknowledgment of our unique and
logical progression in the field of eyelid and facial plastic
surgery. Future volumes in this series will cover other aspects of
eyelid, lacrimal, facial, and orbital surgery.
