In the treatment of infections caused by rapidly mutating viruses like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), combination therapy with multiple drugs act ing by different mechanisms offers several advantages over monotherapy. It may provide: synergistic effect, possible reduction of dosages and side-effects, and reduction of the chance of drug resistance. In the past few years, hun dreds of HIV protease inhibitors have been synthesized and tested in order to overcome the limitations of reverse transcriptase inhibitors like zidovudine and others. In this review, emphasis is placed on the development of HIV pro tease inhibitors as antiviral agents against HIY, and structure-activity rela tionship analysis of saquinavir and related compounds. Limitations of some protease inhibitors and ways to overcome the shortcomings are presented. Among these many protease inhibitors five have been marketed during 1995-1999. They are saquinavir, ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir and ampre navir. Their different structural features, important physicochemical, phar macokinetic and clinical profiles are presented in a table form for easy com parison. A renewed interest in forest damage monitoring has led to a shift in information requirements, as the crown condition assessments initiated in the 1980s in response to the threats posed by air pollution need to be complemented by assessments of specific damages and their causes as well as populations of plausible damaging agents and early signs of damage outbreaks. The aims of this project were to assess past and current methods of monitoring forest damage in Sweden and to set up a new monitoring system that would be better adapted to the information requirements. The current information needs assessments of forest damage to be timely and to be made at several spatial scales. To meet the information needs a new Swedish forest health assessment system has been developed and includes several interacting components targeting the information requirements for strategic and operational decision making, and accommodates a mechanism for continuously expanding the knowledge base. The new system is likely to become increasingly important due to anticipated climate change and should be of interest for anyone concerned in forest damage and with monitoring activities.

It describes his early fascination with Europe's "Strong Men," and with German theater. The book contains an in-depth analysis of his early disillusionment with democracy, and then his growing awareness of the true nature of Nazism and Fascism. It was in particular the Nazi treatment of Europe's Jews that brought Kaj Munk to the front of Danish resistance. He denounced Hitler and the German occupiers from the pulpit and, despite numerous warnings, refused to keep quiet. He was assassinated by the Nazis on January 4, 1944. Kaj Munk was a beacon of light in Denmark's darkest hour, one of that nation's most noted and discussed men of letters, and he remains so to this day.
