South Africa's property law teachers have been convening annually since 1985 to exchange ideas, subject their work to peer scrutiny and build a collegial network. Over time, the agendas of the annual meetings became snapshots of the development of a discipline. In celebration of the 25th anniversary of this meeting, the property law teachers' colloquium was expanded into an International property law conference, giving South African property law teachers an opportunity to exchange their ideas on a much broader platform, with some of the world's best property law scholars and teachers. Property law under scrutiny brings together pieces that give an overview of property law twenty-five years after the establishment of the South African property law teachers' colloquium. A recurrent theme in all the contributions at the conference, and the ones included in this publication, is the tension between well-established principles of property law and the policies that drive legal development in the field. The topics addressed are organised into four themes, as follows: The first cluster relates to an age-old issue in conventional property law: The accession of movables to immovables; The second cluster concerns the centrality of the real agreement in transfers and in the real security context; A third cluster deals with questions about the public law aspects of property; The fourth cluster captures some of the dilemmas and challenges concerning the abandonment and neglect of property. It ties together the underlying concerns aired in debates about the conventional property rules and issues surfacing in the crossover between private and public law, and the role of property law principles. In capturing the interaction between South African and international scholarship, Property law under scrutiny serves to introduce a new era in this developing discipline. Teachers and practitioners of property law, locally and internationally, will find this to be an invaluable resource.

S. Scott Rohrer
R2,941 Discovery Miles 29 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this penetrating biography of Thomas Bradbury Chandler, S. Scott Rohrer takes readers deep into the intellectual world of a leading loyalist who defended monarchy, rejected rebellion and democracy, and opposed the American Revolution. Talented, hardworking, and erudite, this Anglican minister from New Jersey possessed one of the Church of England's most outstanding minds. Chandler was an Anglican leader in the 1760s and a key strategist in the effort to strengthen the American church in the years preceding the Revolution. He headed the campaign to create an Anglican bishopric in America-a cause that helped inflame tensions with American radicals unhappy with British policies. And, in the 1770s, his writings provided some of the most trenchant criticisms of the American revolutionary movement, raising fundamental questions about obedience, subordination, and rebellion that undercut Whig assertions about republicanism and popular control. Working from Chandler's library catalog and other primary sources, Rohrer digs into Chandler's political and religious beliefs, exploring their origins and the events in British history that shaped them. An intriguing and thoughtful reappraisal of a consequential figure in early American history, this biography will captivate students, scholars, and lay readers interested in politics and religion in Revolutionary-era America.

In this fertile collection of essays, prominent theologians, philosophers, historians, and social scientists explore the mutual entanglements of religious identity with political activity in religiously plural societies. Four essays are devoted to each of the three great religions of "The Book, " evidencing the variety of conceptions of such a relation within the same religious tradition and demonstrating how they came to be so conceived. In addition, the three sections together display intriguing similarities between the conceptions that are pertinent to the different traditions. These range from definant theocracy to religious sanction of the liberal, secular state.

Making Sense of Everyday Life (Hardcover): S. Scott Making Sense of Everyday Life (Hardcover)
S. Scott
R1,821 Discovery Miles 18 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This accessible introductory text explains the importance of studying 'everyday life' in the social sciences. Susie Scott examines such varied topics as home, time and schedules, leisure, and eating, to show how societies are created and reproduced by the apparently mundane micro-level practices of everyday life.

Total Institutions and Reinvented Identities (Hardcover): S. Scott Total Institutions and Reinvented Identities (Hardcover)
S. Scott
R2,674 Discovery Miles 26 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Total institutions are places to which people are confined around the clock, in isolation from all other influences and social relationships. Hospitals, prisons and boarding schools create unique social worlds of rituals, routines and sanctions, which pervade every aspect of daily life and have a lasting effect upon their residents. This book revisits and updates Erving Goffman's pessimistic critique of the total institution, which had focused on the 'mortifying' effects of enforced identity erasure in austere and controlling environments. Susie Scott argues that a new organizational form has emerged in the culture of late modernity, which involves subtler mechanisms of social control and whose members cite more positive meanings and motivations.

Punishing Poverty - How Bail and Pretrial Detention Fuel Inequalities in the Criminal Justice System (Paperback): Christine S.... Punishing Poverty - How Bail and Pretrial Detention Fuel Inequalities in the Criminal Justice System (Paperback)
Christine S. Scott-Hayward, Henry F Fradella
R819 Discovery Miles 8 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Most people in jail have not been convicted of a crime. Instead, they have been accused of a crime and cannot afford to post the bail amount to guarantee their freedom until trial. Punishing Poverty examines how the current system of pretrial release detains hundreds of thousands of defendants awaiting trial. Tracing the historical antecedents of the US bail system, with particular attention to the failures of bail reform efforts in the mid to late twentieth century, the authors describe the painful social and economic impact of contemporary bail decisions. The first book-length treatment to analyze how bail reproduces racial and economic inequality throughout the criminal justice system, Punishing Poverty explores reform efforts, as jurisdictions begin to move away from money bail systems, and the attempts of the bail bond industry to push back against such reforms. This accessibly written book gives a succinct overview of the role of pretrial detention in fueling mass incarceration and is essential reading for researchers and reformers alike.

Their contributions analyze the use of subordinated debt, internal models, and rating agencies in addition to examining the effect on capital of reinsurance, securitization, credit derivatives, and similar instruments.

Origins of the Black Atlantic (Hardcover, New): Laurent Dubois, Julius S. Scott Origins of the Black Atlantic (Hardcover, New)
Laurent Dubois, Julius S. Scott
R4,752 Discovery Miles 47 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Between 1492 and 1820, about two-thirds of the people who crossed the Atlantic to the Americas were Africans. With the exception of the Spanish, all the European empires settled more Africans in the New World than they did Europeans. The vast majority of these enslaved men and women worked on plantations, and their labor was the foundation for the expansion of the Atlantic economy during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Until relatively recently, comparatively little attention was paid to the perspectives, daily experiences, hopes, and especially the political ideas of the enslaved who played such a central role in the making of the Atlantic world. Over the past decades, however, huge strides have been made in the study of the history of slavery and emancipation in the Atlantic world. This collection brings together some of the key contributions to this growing body of scholarship, showing a range of methodological approaches, that can be used to understand and reconstruct the lives of these enslaved people.

Rethinking Juvenile Justice (Paperback): Elizabeth S. Scott, Laurence Steinberg Rethinking Juvenile Justice (Paperback)
Elizabeth S. Scott, Laurence Steinberg
R950 Discovery Miles 9 500 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

What should we do with teenagers who commit crimes? Are they children whose offenses are the result of immaturity and circumstances, or are they in fact criminals? "Adult time for adult crime" has been the justice system's mantra for the last twenty years. But locking up so many young people puts a strain on state budgets-and ironically, the evidence suggests it ultimately increases crime. In this bold book, two leading scholars in law and adolescent development offer a comprehensive and pragmatic way forward. They argue that juvenile justice should be grounded in the best available psychological science, which shows that adolescence is a distinctive state of cognitive and emotional development. Although adolescents are not children, they are also not fully responsible adults. Elizabeth Scott and Laurence Steinberg outline a new developmental model of juvenile justice that recognizes adolescents' immaturity but also holds them accountable. Developmentally based laws and policies would make it possible for young people who have committed crimes to grow into responsible adults, rather than career criminals, and would lighten the present burden on the legal and prison systems. In the end, this model would better serve the interests of justice, and it would also be less wasteful of money and lives than the harsh and ineffective policies of the last generation.

Kurt Goedel and the Foundations of Mathematics - Horizons of Truth (Paperback): Matthias Baaz, Christos H. Papadimitriou,... Kurt Goedel and the Foundations of Mathematics - Horizons of Truth (Paperback)
Matthias Baaz, Christos H. Papadimitriou, Hilary W. Putnam, Dana S Scott, Charles L. Harper, Jr
R1,930 Discovery Miles 19 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume commemorates the life, work and foundational views of Kurt Goedel (1906-78), most famous for his hallmark works on the completeness of first-order logic, the incompleteness of number theory, and the consistency - with the other widely accepted axioms of set theory - of the axiom of choice and of the generalized continuum hypothesis. It explores current research, advances and ideas for future directions not only in the foundations of mathematics and logic, but also in the fields of computer science, artificial intelligence, physics, cosmology, philosophy, theology and the history of science. The discussion is supplemented by personal reflections from several scholars who knew Goedel personally, providing some interesting insights into his life. By putting his ideas and life's work into the context of current thinking and perceptions, this book will extend the impact of Goedel's fundamental work in mathematics, logic, philosophy and other disciplines for future generations of researchers.

Marriage at the Crossroads - Law, Policy, and the Brave New World of Twenty-First-Century Families (Hardcover, New): Marsha... Marriage at the Crossroads - Law, Policy, and the Brave New World of Twenty-First-Century Families (Hardcover, New)
Marsha Garrison, Elizabeth S. Scott
R2,478 Discovery Miles 24 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The institution of marriage is at a crossroads. Across most of the industrialized world, unmarried cohabitation and nonmarital births have skyrocketed while marriage rates are at record lows. These trends mask a new, idealized vision of marriage as a marker of success as well as a growing class divide in childbearing behavior: the children of better educated, wealthier individuals continue to be born into relatively stable marital unions while the children of less educated, poorer individuals are increasingly born and raised in more fragile, nonmarital households. The interdisciplinary approach offered by this edited volume provides tools to inform the debate and to assist policy makers in resolving questions about marriage at a critical juncture. Drawing on the expertise of social scientists and legal scholars, the book will be a key text for anyone who seeks to understand marriage as a social institution and to evaluate proposals for marriage reform.

Selected Papers (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1982): Calvin C Elgot Selected Papers (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1982)
Calvin C Elgot; Contributions by Samuel Eilenberg; Foreword by Dana S Scott; Edited by Stephen L. Bloom
R1,460 Discovery Miles 14 600 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Cal Elgot was a very serious and thoughtful researcher, who with great determi nation attempted to find basic explanations for certain mathematical phenomena as the selection of papers in this volume well illustrate. His approach was, for the most part, rather finitist and constructivist, and he was inevitably drawn to studies of the process of computation. It seems to me that his early work on decision problems relating automata and logic, starting with his thesis under Roger Lyndon and continuing with joint work with Biichi, Wright, Copi, Rutledge, Mezei, and then later with Rabin, set the stage for his attack on the theory of computation through the abstract treatment of the notion of a machine. This is also apparent in his joint work with A. Robinson reproduced here and in his joint papers with John Shepherdson. Of course in the light of subsequent work on decision problems by Biichi, Rabin, Shelah, and many, many others, the subject has been placed on a completely different plane from what it was when Elgot left the area. But I feel that his papers, results-and style-were very definitely influential at the time and may well have altered the course of the investigation of these problems. As Sammy Eilenberg explains, the next big influence on Elgot's thinking was category theory, which gave him a way of expressing his ideas in a sharply algebraic manner. The joint book with Eilenberg is one illustration of this influence."

Hip Sonography - Diagnosis and Management of Infant Hip Dysplasia (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2006): R. Graf Hip Sonography - Diagnosis and Management of Infant Hip Dysplasia (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2006)
R. Graf; Contributions by S. Scott, K Lercher, F Baumgartner, A. Benaroya
R2,827 Discovery Miles 28 270 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Sonography of baby hips for the diagnosis of DDH and dysplasia has grown steadily in importance in recent years. A strict standardized technique for investigation of the baby and interpretation of the sonograms has made hip ultrasound reproducible, reliable and independent of examiner skill and experience.

Graf s technique is now used worldwide, and selective or even general screening programmes for all babies are established in many European countries today.

The first part of this book includes the fundamentals of hip sonography, static as well as dynamic techniques, anatomical identification of the echograms, typing, a measurement technique and usability check.

The second part is an atlas including a summary of the essential data and demonstrating correct and incorrect sonograms in different variations. The book is indispensable for everyone dealing with DDH problems in diagnosis and therapy.
