A fail-safe supply network is designed to mitigate the impact of variations and disruptions on people and corporations. This is achieved by (1) developing a network structure to mitigate the impact of disruptions that distort the network structure and (2) planning flow through the network to neutralize the effects of variations. In this monograph, we propose a framework, develop mathematical models and provide examples of fail-safe supply network design. We show that, contrary to current thinking as embodied in the supply network literature, disruption management decisions made at the strategic network design level are not independent from variation management decisions made at the operational level. Accordingly, we suggest that it is beneficial to manage disruptions and variations concurrently in supply networks. This is achieved by architecting fail-safe supply networks, which are characterized by the following elements: reliability, robustness, flexibility, structural controllability, and resilience. Organizations can use the framework presented in this monograph to manage variations and disruptions. Managers can select the best operational management strategies for their supply networks considering variations in supply and demand, and identify the best network restoration strategies including facility fortification, backup inventory, flexible production capacity, flexible inventory, and transportation route reconfiguration. The framework is generalizable to other complex engineered networks.

This book originated out of the papers presented at the special symposium, "Electrochemistry in Transition-From the 20th to the 21st Century," scheduled by the Division of Colloid and Surface Science during the American Chemical Society meeting in Toronto. The symposium was in honor of Professor J. O'M. Bockris, who received the ACS award on "The Chemistry of Contemporary Technological Problems" (sponsored by Mobay Corporation) during this meeting and who also reached his 65th birthday in the same year. The symposium was of a multidisciplinary nature and encompassed the fields of theoretical and experimental elec trochemistry, surface science, spectroscopy, and electrochemical technology. The symposium also had an international flavor in that the participants represented several countries Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, England, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzer land, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, and the United States. To secure Internet transactions from being threatened or attacked, various technologies have been developed. Current technologies still cannot comprehend various threats and attacks. Inspired by this situation, the work described in this book aims to contribute in a better approach in securing Internet transactions. A control system model based on a systems approach for Internet transactions is proposed, and the functionalities of the model are also specified. To analyse patterns of threats and attacks within Internet transactions, an artificial intelligent patterns recogniser is developed. With the patterns recogniser, transaction patterns can then be memorised, recognised, and ultimately analysed. Despite a great amount of patterns, the accuracy of the patterns recogniser is not affected by the number of memorised or recognised patterns. This approach works fast, hence it is suitable for real time processes of Internet transactions. The control system is used for monitoring traffic and system, analysing it through the patterns recogniser, and responding to suspicious or abnormal activities in real time.
