Ghosts at Gettysburg - An Oliver Family Adventure (Hardcover): Lloyd S. Wagner Ghosts at Gettysburg - An Oliver Family Adventure (Hardcover)
Lloyd S. Wagner
R446 Discovery Miles 4 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Gettysburg-Site of the epic battle that forever changed the United States. Some also say it is the most haunted place on earth.

In "Ghosts at Gettysburg," the third Oliver Family Adventure, the Oliver family visits Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, site of the three-day battle. While Tyler and Tommy participate in a re-enactment, learning about the battle and those that fought it, their sister Paige and mother Judy reluctantly learn of the town's haunted history through frightening encounters of their own.

On their very first evening there they see pictures of glowing orbs on the battlefield and meet a mysterious woman who seems to be everywhere. While Tommy marches with Confederate troops and Tyler helps man the cannons atop Cemetery Ridge, the Oliver women encounter the ghosts of a grieving father and a sad young soldier, forcing them to rethink their ideas about ghosts, spirits and hauntings.

When the battle reaches its climax at Pickett's Charge the boys find themselves on opposite sides of that bloody clash. There they learn what it was to be a soldier in the American Civil War.

Greenman (Hardcover): Lloyd S. Wagner Greenman (Hardcover)
Lloyd S. Wagner
R473 Discovery Miles 4 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Greenman-a face peering out of the leaves, the Celtic god of the woods and a figure familiar to us all. Some say he can still be found deep in the English woods.

In the second Oliver Family Adventure, "Greenman," Tyler, Paige and Tommy travel to England and learn about practical jokes, Celtic culture, alternative religions, and why the English drive on the other side of the road, all while immersed in another exciting adventure

Arriving in Sutton Benger, England-a little village with a lot of history-the Oliver's see a man in green get thrown off a bridge. They soon meet Liam, their amiable host and deacon at the village church, his niece Cerri, a spirited girl with a few stories to tell, and encounter Edwin Bell, a mysterious man who lives in the woods. Add Greenman, the timeless Celtic icon, and talk of magic in the woods and soon young imaginations run wild with fears that may, or may not, be real.

When a practical joke leads to unforeseen peril the children are forced to face their fears. In the end they realize that understanding a person's beliefs is the key to seeing those things that make us the same, rather than those that make us different.

Lloyd S. Wagner
R468 Discovery Miles 4 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"El Chupacabras -- The Goatsucker"--a rumored beast with a fanged mouth, enormous red eyes, and thin clawed arms; its name alone ignites the imagination.

With visions of this urban legend in their heads Tyler and Tommy Oliver and their new stepsister, Paige, arrive in tropical Belize for a family vacation. There they meet Peto and Natalie, the only other children on the small island where they are staying.

To their delight, Peto has not only heard of "El Chupacabras," he is convinced there is a goatsucker on the island. Adding to this is Reaux, the resort manager, who tells of encountering a goatsucker.

Following the clues the children learn about life on a barrier reef, the ancient Maya, Caribbean cultures and the power of urban legends. Most importantly, Tyler and Tommy learn to respect and value Paige, finally accepting her as their sister.

Psychology of Prejudice and Discrimination (Paperback, 4th edition): Mary E. Kite, Lisa S Wagner, Bernard E. Whitley Jr Psychology of Prejudice and Discrimination (Paperback, 4th edition)
Mary E. Kite, Lisa S Wagner, Bernard E. Whitley Jr
R3,464 Discovery Miles 34 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Psychology of Prejudice and Discrimination provides a comprehensive and compelling overview of what psychological theory and research have to say about the nature, causes, and reduction of prejudice and discrimination. It balances a detailed discussion of theories and selected research with applied examples that ensure the material is relevant to students. This edition has been thoroughly revised and updated and addresses several interlocking themes. It first looks at the nature of prejudice and discrimination, followed by a discussion of research methods. Next come the psychological underpinnings of prejudice: the nature of stereotypes, the conditions under which stereotypes influence responses to other people, contemporary theories of prejudice, and how individuals' values and belief systems are related to prejudice. Explored next are the development of prejudice in children and the social context of prejudice. The theme of discrimination is developed via discussions of the nature of discrimination, the experience of discrimination, and specific forms of discrimination, including gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, and appearance. The concluding theme is the reduction of prejudice. The book is accompanied by a comprehensive website featuring an Instructor Manual that contains activities and tools to help with teaching a prejudice and discrimination course; PowerPoint slides for every chapter; and a Test Bank with short answer and multiple-choice exam questions for every chapter. This book is an essential companion for all students of prejudice and discrimination, including those in psychology, education, social work, business, communication studies, ethnic studies, and other disciplines. The Collaborative Era in Science - Governing the Network (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Caroline S. Wagner The Collaborative Era in Science - Governing the Network (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Caroline S. Wagner
R3,514 Discovery Miles 35 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years a global network of science has emerged as a result of thousands of individual scientists seeking to collaborate with colleagues around the world, creating a network which rises above national systems. The globalization of science is part of the underlying shift in knowledge creation generally: the collaborative era in science. Over the past decade, the growth in the amount of knowledge and the speed at which it is available has created a fundamental shift-where data, information, and knowledge were once scarce resources, they are now abundantly available. Collaboration, openness, customer- or problem-focused research and development, altruism, and reciprocity are notable features of abundance, and they create challenges that economists have not yet studied. This book defines the collaborative era, describes how it came to be, reveals its internal dynamics, and demonstrates how real-world practitioners are changing to take advantage of it. Most importantly, the book lays out a guide for policymakers and entrepreneurs as they shift perspectives to take advantage of the collaborative era in order to create social and economic welfare.

Antifeminism and the Victorian Novel - Rereading Nineteenth-Century Women Writers (Hardcover, New): Tamara S. Wagner Antifeminism and the Victorian Novel - Rereading Nineteenth-Century Women Writers (Hardcover, New)
Tamara S. Wagner
R2,954 Discovery Miles 29 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides a critical reconsideration of nineteenth-century women's writing by exploring the significance of antifeminist representations for literary developments in the century's second half. It seeks to draw new attention to still neglected authors and works, while suggesting that their reappraisal at once demands and helps to facilitate a more encompassing rethinking of a number of long neglected writers and their still underestimated contribution to Victorian literary culture. Their changing classification, their marginalisation within canon formation, and most importantly, their resistance to simplifications suggested by these shifting categorisations prompts us to break out of such ideological straightjackets ourselves. In analysing a range of material that testifies to the wide spectrum, versatility, and reflexive interchanges of popular Victorian fiction, the essays in this collection work together to interrogate the significance of these still neglected works for the development of the novel genre. This collection makes an important contribution to the study of Victorian literature and especially of recently rediscovered popular writers. It will be of interest to literary critics and students working on the formation of the novel genre in general as well as on nineteenth-century culture more specifically.

The New Invisible College - Science for Development (Paperback): Caroline S. Wagner The New Invisible College - Science for Development (Paperback)
Caroline S. Wagner
R748 Discovery Miles 7 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The twentieth century was the era of "big science." Driven by strategic rivalries and fierce economic competition, wealthy governments invested heavily in national science establishments. Direct funding for institutions like the National Science Foundation and high-visibility projects, such as the race to the moon, fueled innovation, growth, and national prestige. But the big science model left poorer countries out in the cold. Today the organization of science is undergoing a fundamental transformation. In T "he New Invisible College, "Caroline Wagner combines quantitative data and extensive interviews to map the emergence of global science networks and trace the dynamics driving their growth. She argues that the shift from big science to global networks creates unprecedented opportunities for developing countries to tap science's potential. Rather than squander resources in vain efforts to mimic the scientific establishments of the twentieth century, developing country governments can leverage networks by creating incentives for top-notch scientists to focus on research that addresses their concerns and by finding ways to tie knowledge to local problem solving. T "he New Invisible College "offers both a guidebook and a playbook for policymakers confronting these tasks.

Tamara S. Wagner
R4,453 Discovery Miles 44 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In her study of the unsuccessful nineteenth-century emigrant, Tamara S. Wagner argues that failed emigration and return drive nineteenth-century writing in English in unexpected, culturally revealing ways. Wagner highlights the hitherto unexplored subgenre of anti-emigration writing that emerged as an important counter-current to a pervasive emigration propaganda machine that was pressing popular fiction into its service. The exportation of characters at the end of a novel indisputably formed a convenient narrative solution that at once mirrored and exaggerated public policies about so-called 'superfluous' or 'redundant' parts of society. Yet the very convenience of such pat endings was increasingly called into question. New starts overseas might not be so easily realizable; emigration destinations failed to live up to the inflated promises of pro-emigration rhetoric; the 'unwanted' might make a surprising reappearance. Wagner juxtaposes representations of emigration in the works of Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, Frances Trollope, and Charlotte Yonge with Australian, New Zealand, and Canadian settler fiction by Elizabeth Murray, Clara Cheeseman, and Susanna Moodie, offering a new literary history not just of nineteenth-century migration, but also of transoceanic exchanges and genre formation.

Jews and Islamic Law in Early 20th-Century Yemen (Paperback): Mark S. Wagner Jews and Islamic Law in Early 20th-Century Yemen (Paperback)
Mark S. Wagner
R727 R663 Discovery Miles 6 630 Save R64 (9%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In early 20th-century Yemen, a sizable Jewish population was subject to sumptuary laws and social restrictions. Jews regularly came into contact with Islamic courts and Muslim jurists, by choice and by necessity, became embroiled in the most intimate details of their Jewish neighbors lives. Mark S. Wagner draws on autobiographical writings to study the careers of three Jewish intermediaries who used their knowledge of Islamic law to manipulate the shari a for their own benefit and for the good of their community. The result is a fresh perspective on the place of religious minorities in Muslim societies."
